Best Museums & Art Galleries in Provo (2026)

Every museum and gallery worth visiting in Provo — from BYU's world-class art museum to dinosaur fossils, cultural exhibits, and local art spaces.

Provo's museum scene punches above its weight, largely thanks to BYU. The university operates several museums that would be impressive in any city, let alone one with 115,000 people. Add a growing local gallery scene and some pleasantly surprising niche museums, and there's more cultural depth here than most newcomers expect.

The best part: nearly everything is free.

BYU Museums (All Free)

BYU Museum of Art

BYU Campus · Free · Tue–Sat

The flagship. One of the largest university art museums in the Mountain West, with a permanent collection spanning American, European, and contemporary art. The rotating exhibitions are genuinely impressive — BYU has the resources and institutional connections to bring major traveling shows to Provo. The building itself is modern and well-designed, with clean gallery spaces and thoughtful lighting. Plan 1–2 hours for a thorough visit.

Don't miss: The American art collection, which includes works from significant 19th and 20th-century painters. The temporary exhibitions change quarterly and are consistently worth checking.

Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

BYU Campus · Free

Natural history focused, with wildlife exhibits featuring taxidermy from six continents, live animal presentations, and educational displays on ecology and conservation. The museum is especially good for families — kids love the animal displays, the hands-on exhibits, and the live reptile and insect presentations. The collection is surprisingly extensive for a university museum, with specimens ranging from African big game to local Utah wildlife.

Don't miss: The live animal presentations (check the schedule), and the fossil vending machine (yes, really).

BYU Museum of Paleontology

BYU Campus · Free

A smaller, specialized museum focused on dinosaurs and fossils from Utah excavation sites. Utah is one of the richest fossil regions in North America, and this museum connects you to that history through full dinosaur skeletons, fossil displays, and a viewing window into the working preparation lab where researchers clean and catalog finds. Engaging for kids and adults with any interest in natural history.

Museum of Peoples and Cultures

BYU Campus · Free

A cross-cultural museum showcasing artifacts, art, and exhibits from civilizations around the world. The museum's focus on connecting historical artifacts to contemporary cultural understanding makes it more engaging than a typical display-case experience. Rotating exhibitions keep it fresh, and the smaller size means you can see everything in 30–45 minutes. Often nearly empty, giving you the galleries to yourself.

Other Museums

Crandall Historical Printing Museum

Downtown Provo · $ · By appointment

A hidden gem. The Crandall Museum houses working replicas of historically significant printing presses — including a Gutenberg press, a Ben Franklin press, and presses used to print early American documents. Guided demonstrations show the presses in action, and the guides are knowledgeable and passionate. It's small, niche, and unexpectedly fascinating. Best visited by appointment — check their schedule.

Provo Pioneer Village

$ · Seasonal

A collection of restored pioneer-era buildings and artifacts that tell the story of Provo's early settlement history. Small and seasonal (limited hours), but worth a visit if you're interested in the history of the region.

Art Galleries

Provo Gallery Walk

Several small galleries along Center Street and in downtown Provo showcase local and regional artists. The gallery scene is modest compared to Salt Lake City but growing, with spaces hosting regular openings, shows, and community art events.

The Tiny Art Gallery

Downtown Provo · Free

Exactly what it sounds like — a tiny gallery tucked between buildings on Main Street with limited hours. When it's open, it's a charming and distinctly Provo experience. When it's closed, you can peer through the windows. It's become a local curiosity and Instagram favorite.

BYU Exhibitions

Beyond the Museum of Art, various buildings on BYU's campus host exhibitions from student and faculty artists. The Harris Fine Arts Center and the library often have smaller shows that are worth a detour if you're on campus.
