BYU's Winter 2027 semester starts, and roughly 30,000 students return to Provo at once — the single biggest swing in the city's population all year.

The first day of Winter Semester is the day Provo changes character. Restaurants near campus go from quiet to queued, the 900 East corridor slows down, and apartment complexes finish a contract turnover that has been running through the holidays.

If you live here and do not follow the university calendar, this is the date worth knowing: the city you drove through in December is not the city you will drive through on January 7.
