Moving to Utah Valley comes with two clocks people miss and one utility map that splits the valley down the middle. A new resident has no grace period for a Utah driver license and 60 days to register a car, and the act that makes you a resident can be as small as enrolling a child in school. Provo, Lehi, Springville, Spanish Fork, Payson and Salem run their own electric utilities; most of their neighbors do not. Tell the checklist who is moving and where, and it keeps only the items that apply. Each item quotes the sentence from our guide that states it, so you can read the whole guide before you act.
Before you sign a lease or make an offer
-
“Ask explicitly which utilities are included; the answer varies enormously between complexes here and it changes the real cost of a unit by a lot.”
-
“a large share of leases are by the bed, not by the unit, on contracts that run to an academic calendar rather than twelve months.”
“If you are signing a shared-bedroom contract, read the sections on transferring and on what happens if a roommate leaves. Those are the clauses that generate the disputes.”
-
“The district publishes a boundary locator that returns the assigned elementary, middle and high school for a specific address.”
-
“If a specific school is load-bearing in your decision, confirm the current assignment with the district in writing, and understand that you are confirming today's answer.”
-
“Decide which state you are voting in before you sign anything at a table.”

What this list leaves out, on purpose
Fees. Utah's license, registration and title fees are set by statute and change, and our Provo DMV guide declines to print a fee table for that reason, so this list does too. The Driver License Division and DMV pages linked above carry the current amounts. It also leaves out office hours, which move, and anything about a specific apartment complex or school, which is what the linked guides are for.
If you are still choosing where to live, start with moving to Provo, the neighborhood quiz and the school district finder. Students should also read the out-of-state student paperwork guide, which this list leans on, and anyone weighing a UVU residency case should read the in-state tuition guide before registering anything.
