Your trusted guide to Provo, Orem & Utah Valley

Salt Lake & Beyond

Everything within driving range, timed and costed from Provo — the day trips, the nearby cities, and the honest hour count rather than the optimistic one.

Utah Valley's real advantage is not what is in it. It is that five national parks, a major city, a world-class ski corridor, a salt desert and a dinosaur quarry all sit within a day or a weekend of the same freeway exit. The catch is that almost every guide to these places is written from Salt Lake, and the hour it quietly adds or subtracts is exactly the hour that decides whether something is a day trip or an overnight. These 51 guides are all timed from Provo, which is the only distance that matters if you live here.

The three-hour line does most of the work. Inside it — Park City, Heber, Ogden, Antelope Island, the Uintas, Salt Lake itself — a day trip is comfortable and you are home for dinner. Outside it, you are spending the daylight driving, and Moab, Zion, Bryce and Vernal are honestly better as weekends. We say which is which rather than calling everything a day trip. The other half of this hub is closer to home: the sixteen cities of Utah County, which read as one continuous suburb from I-15 and are not. Lehi, Springville, Spanish Fork and American Fork have genuinely different characters, and each has its own guide here.

The day trips overview is the map of everything below, ranked by drive time. For the city an hour north, the airport run and a Delta Center game night are the two trips almost everyone makes first. For the valley itself, Orem and Lehi are the two nearby cities with the most to actually do.

Frequently asked

How far is Salt Lake City?

About 45 miles — 50 minutes at a quiet hour, considerably more either side of the commute, because the Point of the Mountain is the bottleneck the whole valley shares. FrontRunner is the alternative and rewards planning around the timetable. The airport run is the trip most worth checking traffic for.

Which national park is closest?

Capitol Reef, at roughly three and a half hours, which surprises people because Zion and Arches get the attention. It is also the least crowded. Moab and Bryce are about four; Zion around four and a half. None is a comfortable day trip, and the guides say so.

What can I do without a car?

More than you would expect. FrontRunner links Provo and Orem to Salt Lake and Ogden, and UTA covers the urbanized strip reasonably. Winter resorts are the hard case, which is why reaching Sundance without a car has its own guide. Anything rural needs one.

Day trip or overnight?

Three hours is the line. Inside it — Park City, Heber, Ogden, Antelope Island — a day works. Beyond it you are spending the daylight driving.

Which nearby city is worth a visit?

Depends what you want: Lehi for Thanksgiving Point and the outlets, Springville for the art museum, Spanish Fork for the rodeo and the Krishna temple, American Fork for its canyon.

Can I fly direct from Provo?

To a limited and changing set of destinations. Provo Airport is small, cheap to park at and quick to clear, but airlines add and drop routes here more often than at a hub — the nonstop guide flags that rather than promising a route map.
