Game days at LaVell Edwards and the Marriott Center, the tickets and the parking, the rec leagues you can actually join, and the race calendar.

Sport in Utah Valley splits cleanly into two things that rarely overlap. One is BYU, which on a home Saturday turns a city of a hundred thousand into a stadium town: 60,000-odd people converge on one campus, the approaches back up for hours, the neighborhood parking is enforced, and the ticket market behaves nothing like a normal box office. The other is the participant side, which is quietly one of the best-value things about living here — city rec departments running cheap adult leagues, rec centers that would cost several times as much elsewhere, and a race calendar with something most months.

These 17 guides cover both, and they are written on the assumption that the logistics are the hard part. Anyone can find out when kickoff is. What is harder to find out is which ticket route applies to which kind of buyer, how early to leave for a Big 12 game, where the public lots actually are, when league registration closes, and what the Marathon's downhill canyon course does to your legs at mile twenty. Where a fact has a date attached — a schedule, a registration window, a season — the guide states when it was last checked rather than implying it is permanent.

Frequently asked

How do BYU football tickets work?

Not like a normal box office. Season tickets, the student ROC pass and the secondary market run on different rules, and marquee Big 12 games behave nothing like the rest of the schedule. The tickets guide explains which route applies to which buyer.

Where do I park?

The closest lots are permit-controlled on game day and the surrounding streets are enforced. Traffic builds long before kickoff and clears slowly. The parking guide covers the public lots and when to actually arrive.

Are there adult rec leagues?

Plenty, and cheap — softball, basketball, volleyball and pickleball across the valley's city recreation departments. The leagues guide covers the registration windows, which open well ahead of the season.

What is the biggest race?

The Utah Valley Marathon, down Provo Canyon — a net downhill, which makes it fast and harder on the legs than runners expect. The annual race calendar has the rest.

Which pro teams can I reach?

All of Utah's, all within about an hour. The pro sports guide covers the Jazz, Mammoth, Real Salt Lake, the Bees and the Warriors; a Delta Center game night costs and times the trip including FrontRunner.

Is high-school football a big deal?

In several Utah County towns it is the main event of the autumn week. The rivalry map explains who plays whom and why it matters, which the schedule alone does not tell you.
