How it happened
BYU struck first. Bear Bachmeier found Kyler Kasper for a 27-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter, and Matthias Dunn's kick made it 7-0.
UCF took a halftime lead. Landen Chambers ran in from 2 yards to tie it early in the second quarter, and Will Stone's 19-yard field goal put the Knights ahead 10-7. Bachmeier answered with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 14-10 BYU lead, but UCF quarterback Keyone Jenkins hit Chambers for a 6-yard touchdown with eight seconds left in the half. UCF led 17-14 at the break.
A back-and-forth third quarter. Sione Moa's 1-yard touchdown run put BYU back in front 21-17. Jenkins answered with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the quarter, set up by a 56-yard catch-and-run by Tyren Hornes, and UCF led 24-21.
Dunn tied it. Matthias Dunn made a 46-yard field goal with 12:15 to play: 24-24.
The final two minutes of regulation
UCF drove to the BYU goal line and went for it on fourth-and-goal from inside the 1. BYU's defense stopped the Knights with 1:42 left, Yahoo Sports' live coverage reported. BYU went three-and-out, and UCF got the ball back with just under a minute to go.
Then came the sequence Cougar fans will talk about all week. A Jenkins fumble that BYU recovered was overturned on review to an incomplete pass, and BYU was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, moving UCF into field goal range. BYU blocked Will Stone's 46-yard attempt on third down. Stone's helmet came off on the play; no penalty was called, and a 10-second runoff ended regulation at 24-24.
Overtime
First overtime. BYU had the ball first. Facing third-and-13, Bachmeier threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Legend Glasker, and BYU led 31-24. UCF answered on its first snap: Jenkins scrambled, bought time and found Josh Derry for a 25-yard touchdown. 31-31.
Second overtime. Jenkins threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Brousseau, and Hornes caught the two-point conversion to make it 39-31. BYU's possession in the second overtime did not produce points, and UCF won.

Why this one stings
BYU arrived in Orlando at No. 2 after beating Notre Dame 28-24 in Provo the week before, a win covered in our Notre Dame recap. The Associated Press summed up the day in its headline: BYU became the latest unbeaten team to fall in college football. The loss is the Cougars' first of the season and their first in Big 12 play. With five regular-season games left, including a home game on Halloween and the Holy War, the season is far from settled.
