Sanpete Valley, the string of small towns south of Utah Valley along US-89, was settled in large part by Scandinavian immigrants in the late 1800s, and its summer still runs on hometown celebrations. Four anchor the season: Ephraim's Scandinavian Heritage Festival over Memorial Day weekend, Mount Pleasant's Hub City Days at the Fourth of July, Fountain Green's Lamb Days in mid-July, and Fairview's Pioneer Days in the week of Pioneer Day. Each is a short drive from Provo through Spanish Fork Canyon.

Scandinavian Heritage Festival, Ephraim
Ephraim calls itself "Little Denmark," and this is its signature weekend. The festival began in 1976 as a community fundraiser to restore the town's historic buildings, and 2025 marked its 50th anniversary. Ephraim's city says it now draws nearly 20,000 visitors a year, and it has long been described as one of the largest Scandinavian celebrations in the western United States.
The festival centers on the Snow College campus and historic Pioneer Park. What to expect:
- Pioneer cabins and Scandinavian villages set up for exploring, with cultural demonstrations throughout.
- A quilt show in the historic Ephraim Co-op building.
- Viking-inspired competitions that test strength and skill.
- Two stages, the Main Stage and the Pioneer Stage, with regional musicians, dancers and performers. The 2025 lineup ran from Scandinavian and Celtic traditional music to bluegrass, country and fiddling.
- Storytelling: Norse myths, Scandinavian folktales and pioneer ancestor stories.
For many families it doubles as a homecoming, a reason to come back to the valley and reconnect with family and friends.
Hub City Days, Mount Pleasant
Hub City Days is Mount Pleasant's Independence Day celebration. The city's program includes:
- The Hub City Rodeo, with its own rodeo queen.
- A parade, the Freedom Run and an All American Triathlon.
- Pickleball and cornhole tournaments.
- A family street dance and color throw, a community paint night and a chalk event called Chalk the Court.
- A Sunday evening concert in the park.
In 2024 the celebration ran from July 1 to 4, with events at the Mt. Pleasant Rodeo Grounds. The city posts each year's schedule on its website in early summer.
Lamb Days, Fountain Green
Fountain Green's celebration honors the sheep ranching that built the town. It was once known as "Wool City," with around 100,000 head of sheep, and was billed as the richest little city per capita in the country. The first Lamb Day was held on August 23, 1930. Today the celebration is held in July and centers on Center Street, with a wool show, a craft fair, a parade and fireworks.
Fountain Green sits on State Route 132 between Nephi and Moroni, which makes it an easy pairing with a July trip to Nephi's Ute Stampede.
Pioneer Days, Fairview
Fairview, the first Sanpete city you reach on US-89 from Utah Valley, marks Pioneer Day with a celebration that runs through the week of July 24. Local listings describe parades, a rodeo, fireworks and community dinners. Fairview City posts the schedule each summer; check it before you go, since the lineup changes from year to year.
Planning from Provo
- The drive: US-89 through Spanish Fork Canyon. Fairview is roughly an hour from Provo, Mount Pleasant a few minutes past it, and Ephraim about 20 minutes farther south.
- The back way: from Nephi, State Route 132 climbs east to Fountain Green and Moroni. The Nebo Loop Scenic Byway links Payson and Nephi if you want the long, scenic version in summer.
- Pick your weekend: late May for Ephraim, the Fourth for Mount Pleasant, mid-July for Fountain Green and the week of the 24th for Fairview.
