Asahi Sushi Bar is the north State Street sushi room that our sushi guide gives more space than any other venue in this directory's unwritten tail, and the reason is that it does two things the valley mostly does not: it stays open late, and it runs a Japanese kitchen alongside the raw bar rather than behind it.
Where it is
On north State Street in Orem, in a short strip that has held several Asian restaurants at once for years. State Street and University Parkway are the two arteries Orem's dining is strung along, and this is the State Street half.
Orem runs its own address grid from its own origin point, and it does not line up with Provo's — the same number is a different place in each city. Our guide to how Utah addresses actually work covers why.
What we know about it
The menu splits cleanly. One half is the specialty-roll board that any Utah Valley sushi room carries. The other is a cooked Japanese menu -- yakisoba, teriyaki plates, rice bowls, miso-glazed salmon, marinated short ribs -- which is why several listings file it under Korean and Japanese as well as sushi, and why it works for a table where only one person wants raw fish.
The schedule is the part worth knowing. Most independent rooms in Provo and Orem shut early and shut entirely on Sunday. This one runs substantially later on Friday and Saturday than the surrounding blocks do, which is a real gap in a valley where late food is thin and our own late-night coverage has to work hard to fill a page. It follows the local pattern on Sunday. Confirm with the restaurant before building an evening around it.
