Heart & Seoul is a Korean-style karaoke lounge in downtown Provo, and it is one of the few rooms in the valley built for a group that wants an evening out with no alcohol involved and no dinner reservation attached.

Where it is

At 52 West Center Street, a few doors west of University Avenue, in a building put up in 1890 as the Diamond Saloon -- which is a fairly Provo piece of history for a room that now rents private singing booths.

Provo addresses are grid references rather than house numbers in the usual sense: they count outward from the origin at Center Street and University Avenue, one hundred to a block. What we know about it

It opened in 2017, founded by BYU graduates, and it runs two formats at once. The front of the house is an open stage with couches and screens, American open-mic in shape, seating something like fifty. Behind that are private rooms on the Korean model, rented by the hour by groups who would rather not perform for strangers. The room count has grown since it opened. There is a second location in Salt Lake City under the same name.

One thing we will not print: the size of the song catalog. Our own nightlife page says thirty thousand, the county visitors' bureau says forty thousand and up, and a third listing claims three hundred thousand. Those cannot all be true, and a directory that repeats the largest number it finds is doing marketing rather than reference. The honest version is that the catalog is large and multilingual, and that nobody who has actually gone has run out of songs.

It closes Sunday, like most of independent downtown Provo. Rooms are reserved rather than walked into on a weekend night, which is the practical thing to know.
