Safe First-Date Spots in Provo and Orem: Public, Daytime and Walkable, With the Hours Checked and the Safety Rules Police Recommend

Meeting a match for the first time in Provo or Orem? Ten public, daytime spots with hours checked, plus police and FTC safety advice for first dates.

The best first date with someone from an app is short, public, in daylight and easy to leave. That is not pessimism; it is how police safety guides describe a good first meeting, and it happens to make better dates too: low pressure, cheap, and over in an hour if it is not working. Below are ten places in Provo and Orem that fit, each with its hours as listed in October 2026, followed by the safety rules to bring with you.

For more romantic second and third dates, our date ideas in Provo and date-night activities across Utah Valley pages have plenty. This page is for the first one.

What makes a first-date spot safe

Virginia Tech's police department publishes a short list of rules for meeting someone from online dating. We used it as the filter:

  1. "Always meet in a well-lit public place."
  2. "Always tell a good friend where you are going and who you're meeting."
  3. "Always make your own travel arrangements to/from a first date."
  4. "Do not accept a ride home on the first date or reveal your address."
  5. "Keep your first date to a specified time limit so you always have an 'exit' point."
  6. "Never feel like you owe it to someone to meet them."

So every place below is public, staffed, open in daylight, reachable on your own, and easy to leave after an hour.

Hours are from each place's Google Maps listing in October 2026, except the museum's, which come from its own website. Confirm before you go; hours change.

In downtown Provo

Provo City Library at Academy Square (550 N. University Ave.). A public library about five blocks north of Center Street, open until 9 p.m. on weekdays. Meeting at the entrance and walking south toward downtown for a drink is an easy plan with a natural end.

Coffee on Center Street. Java Junkie (16 W. Center St.) listed the longest hours downtown, including Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Peace on Earth Coffee (35 N. 300 West) listed 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. most days and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Incidental Coffee Roasters (27 N. 100 West) listed 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A coffee shop does not have to mean coffee: if your date keeps the Church's Word of Wisdom, which asks members to avoid coffee and tea, look over the menu together for something else.

Provo Farmers Market (500 W. Center St.). Google listed Saturday hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A crowded outdoor market is about as public as a date gets, and the stalls give you something to talk about. Our farmers markets by day guide covers the season.

Near BYU

BYU Museum of Art (500 Campus Dr.). The museum says "admission is free," and it stays open until 9 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Walking the galleries side by side takes pressure off the conversation.

BYU Creamery on Ninth (1209 N. 900 East). Ice cream, bright lights and a steady crowd, open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A first date here costs a few dollars and can end gracefully after one cone.

North Provo and Orem

The Shops at Riverwoods (4801 N. University Ave.). A shopping center with restaurants, open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Good for a daytime walk and a casual lunch.

Orem Public Library (58 N. State St.). Open until 9 p.m. on weekdays, with an events calendar that includes concerts and adult programs; an evening event there gives a first date a built-in activity.

SCERA Center for the Arts (745 S. State St., Orem). A theater and film venue; a show or a film means you only have to talk before and after.

Outdoors, in daylight

Utah Lake State Park (4400 W. Center St., Provo). Listed open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. A daytime walk along the water works if both of you drive yourselves; the park charges an entry fee, which our Utah Lake State Park guide lists. Save sunset for a later date, and skip isolated trails for a first meeting.

Getting there and getting home on your own

The point of "make your own travel arrangements" is that you can leave whenever you want.

Before the date: the scam check

If a match has not met you yet and already needs money, it is not a date. The Federal Trade Commission lists the warning signs: someone who wants to move the conversation to text or email quickly, claims "it's true love" but lives far away, says they cannot meet because they work abroad, on an oil rig or in the military, and then asks for money for a medical bill, a plane ticket or "help getting started in cryptocurrency investing," paid by wire transfer, gift card, payment app or crypto. The FTC's bottom line: "Never send money or gifts to someone you haven't met in person." Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the app where you met.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is a safe place for a first date in Provo?
Somewhere public, staffed and busy in daylight, where you can arrive and leave on your own. In downtown Provo, the Provo City Library at Academy Square, the coffee shops on and near Center Street and the Saturday farmers market fit; near BYU, the free BYU Museum of Art and the BYU Creamery on Ninth do. In Orem, the Orem Public Library and the SCERA Center for the Arts work.
What are the basic first-date safety rules?
Virginia Tech's police department lists them plainly: learn about the person first, meet in a well-lit public place, tell a friend where you are going and who you are meeting, carry a phone, make your own travel arrangements, do not accept a ride home or reveal your address on the first date, and keep the date to a set time so you have an exit. It also says you never owe anyone a meeting.
Should I let my date pick me up for a first date?
Police safety guidance says no. Make your own travel arrangements to and from a first date, and do not accept a ride home or share your address until you know the person.
Is the BYU Museum of Art free?
Yes. The museum says admission is free, with hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. It is closed Sunday.
What are good first-date spots in Provo on a Sunday?
Fewer are open. Of the spots on this page, Java Junkie on Center Street listed Sunday hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Peace on Earth Coffee 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Utah Lake State Park 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in October 2026. The libraries, the art museum, the Creamery and the Shops at Riverwoods were closed Sundays.
How can I get to a first date in Provo without a car?
UVX, UTA's bus rapid transit line in Provo and Orem, is one option. UTA says the regular fare is $2.50, and BYU and UVU students and staff ride free with their ID. A rideshare is another way to keep your own transportation.
How do I spot a dating scam before a first date?
The Federal Trade Commission's warning signs include a match who wants to move off the app quickly, says they cannot meet because they are overseas, on an oil rig or in the military, and asks for money by wire, gift card, payment app or cryptocurrency. Its bottom line: never send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person.
What should I do if a first date feels wrong?
Leave. The guidance is to keep the date to a set time limit so you have an exit, step away to call a friend if you need to, and never feel you owe anyone more time. Because you arranged your own transportation, you can go whenever you want.
