Lehi Bakery is the home of the square doughnut since 1969, the mom-and-pop Main Street bakery in old-town Lehi that our desserts guide says is the reason a Provo dessert run sometimes goes north.
Where it is
At 172 West Main Street in Lehi, in the historic Main Street district on the north edge of the valley -- roughly half an hour from downtown Provo. The Lehi shop is the original; the business has since grown to several other locations.
Lehi runs its own address grid from its own origin point, and it does not line up with Provo's — the same number is a different place in each city. Our guide to how Utah addresses actually work covers why.
What we know about it
The square glazed doughnut is the thing: hot, fresh and, in our guide's words, perfect in its simplicity. Behind it our desserts guide lists old-fashioned buttermilk doughnuts, maple bars, Long Johns, cinnamon rolls and cakes, and credits the mom-and-pop feel and generous portions with a fiercely loyal following that has let the family grow the business to several shops across the north end of the county.
It earns three separate mentions in that guide's closing advice, which is more than most bakeries get. Best baked goods: Lehi Bakery for the square doughnut, alongside Provo Bakery and Shirley's for rolls and Bianca's for French pastry. Best for families: let the kids pick their own doughnut. Best value: the BYU Creamery and Lehi Bakery deliver the most sweet per dollar.
It is one of the directory's few entries outside Provo and Orem, and it is here for the reason our scope note gives: it is named with a street address on this site's own pages, which is the entry condition every other row meets. The bakery was opened by Arden Tuckett and is now run by his son, which is the kind of continuity that explains why a doughnut shop on a small-town Main Street has a county-wide reputation. Our guide notes it closes mid-afternoon and, like most independents here, on Sunday; go early, because the square doughnuts go first.
