What to know before you commit

Student housing in Provo works on rules that catch nearly every first-year from out of state. Contracts are frequently by-the-bed rather than by-the-unit, terms are often tied to semesters rather than to twelve months, and BYU maintains its own approved-housing boundaries and standards that are separate from anything the city requires.

Practical consequence: you are usually signing for a bed in a shared unit, your roommates may be assigned rather than chosen, and the contract you sign in February is for a room you will not see until August. Ask more questions than feel polite.

  • Confirm whether the contract is by-the-bed or whole-unit, and exactly which months it covers.
  • If BYU approval matters to you, verify it with BYU directly rather than with the listing.
  • Ask how roommate assignment works and whether you can request specific people.
  • Check the parking situation before you bring a car — this is the single most common regret near campus.
