Utah County has two commercial climbing gyms and one university wall that sells a community pass, and they are not interchangeable. The Quarry in north Provo is the only commercial gym in the county with ropes. Momentum Lehi is bigger and open later, but it is bouldering only. The Project at UVU has ropes and the lowest price in the valley, with student-calendar hours. Pick by the kind of climbing you want first, then by price and the day of the week.
This page is the indoor comparison. For the outdoor crags, the ice and the gear list, start with our guide to rock and ice climbing in Provo.
The three, side by side
Prices and hours below are as each gym posted them in October 2026. Drive times are OpenStreetMap routing from downtown Provo without traffic.
| Gym | What you can climb | Adult day pass | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Quarry, Provo (6 min) | Top rope, lead, bouldering | $20, rentals extra | Noon to 6 p.m. |
| The Project, UVU, Orem (12 min) | Top rope, lead | $8 guest pass + $5 wall fee | Closed |
| Momentum Lehi (21 min) | Bouldering only | $29 | 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| Momentum Sandy (35 min) | Top rope, lead, bouldering | $29 | 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
Momentum Sandy is in Salt Lake County, and it is on the table because it is the nearest rope gym once you are north of Lehi, and because a Momentum multi-gym membership covers it.
The Quarry Indoor Climbing Center
2494 North University Parkway, Provo. The Quarry opened in September 2000 and, by its own account, was built by climbers, is owned by climbers and is still run by them. It is the gym closest to BYU and the only commercial gym in Utah County where you can tie in. It does all three disciplines under one roof: bouldering, top rope and lead.
Hours. Winter hours took effect October 1, 2026: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday noon to 6 p.m. Note the two early-morning days, Tuesday and Thursday; the other weekdays open at 10. On Halloween, Saturday, October 31, the gym closes at 5 p.m.
Cost. A general day pass is $20 for ages 12 and up and $15 for 11 and under, and you can leave and come back the same day. A 10-visit punch pass is $170, the punches never expire, and they can be shared between people. Rentals are separate: harness $5, shoes $6, both for $8. The gym is cashless. Memberships run $65 a month plus a $59 enrollment fee for an individual, $60 a month plus $39 for students, or $750 and $650 a year paid up front with no enrollment fee. Family plans cover a spouse and children under 18, not siblings or roommates, and rentals are not included with any membership.
What comes with it. Yoga runs Monday through Thursday from 10 to 11 p.m. and is included with memberships and with any admission that day. A Women's Rockreation Club meets on the first and third Mondays of each month. Members get one guest pass a month.
Belaying. Top-rope belay certification is free and usually takes about 15 minutes at the front desk; lead certification is a separate test. Climbers under 12 must be belayed by an adult 18 or older, and anyone 12 or older can certify to belay others 12 and up.
Who it suits. Anyone in Provo who wants ropes without a drive, BYU students, and families with young children, who get a youth day pass and a gym open seven days a week.
The Project at UVU
Student Life and Wellness Center, 800 West University Parkway, Orem. UVU's Outdoor Adventure Center runs this rope wall inside the student recreation building. Routes run from 5.5 to 5.12-plus. It is a wall inside a student gym rather than a climbing gym of its own, and climbing without supervision by wall staff is prohibited.
Who can use it. UVU students taking 10 or more credit hours, and anyone with a paid Student Life and Wellness Center membership, climb free. Everyone else can come in on a guest day pass. For community members not affiliated with UVU, the school also sells a wall-only membership.
Cost. For non-members: an $8 guest day pass to the building plus a $5 climbing wall fee, so $13 for the day. The community wall membership is $35 a month for unlimited wall access. Rentals for members are $1 for shoes with the harness free; for non-members, shoes $4, harness $3, or both for $5.
Hours. Fall semester hours are Monday through Friday noon to 10 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no Sunday hours. The wall posts its closures for events and classes ahead of time, and in October 2026 there were several a week, some at midday and some in the evening, so check the list before driving over.
Rules worth knowing. Anyone 14 or older who wants to belay must pass two belay checks with the staff; 13 and under cannot belay at all. Lead climbing and lead belaying require a lead test, scheduled one day in advance. Children under 16 need an accompanying adult. The Outdoor Adventure Center also runs evening clinics, an intro night and a learn-to-lead night, posted on the same page.
Who it suits. Every UVU student who has not yet noticed that a rope wall comes with tuition. For everyone else, it is the cheapest roped climbing in the county on a weekday afternoon.
Momentum Indoor Climbing, Lehi
401 South 850 East, Lehi. Momentum built its Lehi gym in 2014. It holds about 21,000 square feet of climbing terrain, more than 225 boulder problems and roughly 500 square feet of kids' bouldering, plus a large fitness and yoga area and showers. There are no ropes: bouldering is climbing on walls up to about 15 feet above pads, with no harness and no partner, after a required safety orientation.
Hours. Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with 8 to 10 a.m. reserved for members; Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. That makes it the latest-open climbing in the county on weeknights, and one of the two options on a Sunday. Momentum closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and runs short 10-to-6 hours on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Cost. An adult day pass is $29 for ages 12 and up and $21 for 11 and under, and it covers the climbing, fitness floor and showers. Shoe rental is $7. A 10-visit punch card is $239. A Lehi-only membership is $99 a month for an individual plus a $59 enrollment fee; access to every Momentum location costs $109 a month. A two-week trial costs $49 and includes a 90-minute Learn to Climb class with gear.
Member perks. Each member gets one guest pass a month, and on the first Friday of each month a member can bring one more friend free.
Who it suits. Boulderers, people who want a full gym floor in the same membership, early risers and late climbers, and anyone in Lehi, American Fork or Saratoga Springs who would otherwise drive south to Provo.
When the rope wall you want is in Sandy
If you live at the north end of the county and want ropes, Momentum Sandy at 220 West 10600 South is the closest gym after The Quarry. It was the first Momentum gym and holds about 20,000 square feet of terrain, with more than 180 routes and more than 180 boulders. Day passes cost the same $29 as Lehi; a combo rental of harness, shoes and belay device is $11. To lead there you must bring your own rope of at least 35 meters and pass a $5 lead test. Its hours match Lehi's, including the Sunday 10-to-6.
The math on the multi-gym membership: $10 a month more than Lehi alone, and it opens Sandy's ropes, plus the other Salt Lake County Momentum gyms, for anyone who boulders in Lehi on weeknights and wants to rope up on weekends.
The real cost of ten sessions
For someone climbing twice a week who has not bought gear yet, here is what 10 visits cost at posted October 2026 prices:
- The Quarry: $170 punch pass plus $8 a visit for harness and shoes, so $250. With your own shoes and harness, $170.
- UVU's Project, community member: $130 in day fees plus $5 a visit in rentals, so $180, or one $35 month of the wall membership plus rentals, which wins the moment you climb more than twice.
- Momentum Lehi: $239 punch card, plus $7 a visit for shoes unless the card includes them, so confirm at the desk.
The first purchase that pays for itself at every gym is a pair of climbing shoes. After that, the membership beats a punch pass somewhere around the third or fourth week of regular climbing.
Picking one
- You are a UVU student: The Project, because it is free, then add The Quarry or Momentum when you want Sundays or bouldering.
- You want ropes and live in Provo or Orem: The Quarry.
- You only want to boulder, or you want a gym and a climbing wall in one membership: Momentum Lehi.
- Sunday is your free day: The Quarry from noon or Momentum Lehi from 10. Not UVU.
- You are bringing a group: each gym runs group rates, from The Quarry's 10-person minimum at $15 a head to Momentum Lehi's $25 per climber with 14 days' notice. Our guide to kids' birthday parties in Utah Valley covers the party side.
Beyond the gyms
The city recreation centers fill in around these three. Provo, Orem, Lehi and Springville each list a climbing wall or climbing feature in their rec centers, and our Utah Valley rec centers comparison says which, along with the day-pass prices. They are a cheap first try, not a replacement for a gym. For lifting, classes and the rest of the fitness market, see our Provo gym guide.
When the weather turns, the gym crowd moves outside. American Fork Canyon's limestone is the summer destination, and our American Fork Canyon climbing guide covers the crags, the grades and the fee. And if part of the point is meeting people, climbing gyms are one of the easier rooms in the valley to walk into alone; our guide to making friends in Provo has more.
