Sewing, Knitting and Fiber Arts in Utah Valley: Where to Start, Plus the Weaving, Rug Hooking and Hand-Stitching Groups Most Guides Miss

A map of fiber arts in Utah Valley: where sewing, knitting and quilting live, plus the weaving guild, rug-hooking and hand-stitching clubs, and a fiber mill.

Provo.com already has full guides to the three biggest fiber crafts in the valley, so if you came here for one of them, here is where to go:

This page covers the rest of the fiber world near Provo: weaving, rug hooking, hand stitching, spinning and the groups that keep them going. It is shorter than those guides because the scene is smaller, and where we looked for something and did not find it, we say so.

Weaving

The guild. The Mary Meigs Atwater Weaver's Guild of Utah was founded in 1956 "to promote the art of handweaving and provide weaving resources to the community," and it welcomes "fiber artists of all levels and interests," not just weavers. It meets monthly, September through June, on the second Thursday, normally at the South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society, 6876 South Highland Drive in Cottonwood Heights, and offers some programs on Zoom. A Southwest Utah branch meets in the St. George area. Visitors are welcome at any meeting.

Membership is $32 a year with a downloadable newsletter or $37 with a mailed one, running September through August. The guild keeps a lending library and runs study groups, workshops, exhibits and sales. Its fall 2026 offering was a four-part study group on PCW Fiberworks weaving software, meeting at 7 p.m. Mountain time on October 26, December 7, January 11 and February 8, for $25 for the series to members.

From Utah Valley, Cottonwood Heights is a drive up I-15 and across the south end of Salt Lake County, and the Zoom programs make the guild workable from Provo.

Looms locally. Our yarn shop guide notes that Heindselman's Yarn and Needlework in downtown Provo has carried cricket looms (small rigid-heddle looms) and handspun yarn, which makes it the closest place to ask about getting started.

Showing and selling. The Springville Art Festival in September juries a fiber category that its 2026 packet defines as works "created from fibers, including basketry, weaving, papermaking, leather, and fabric," and specifies "No crafts." Our guide to craft booths at Utah Valley festivals covers its fees and deadlines.

Rug hooking and hand stitching

Corn Wagon Quilt Company at 303 East 400 South in Springville is better known for quilting, but its calendar shows the valley's most regular hand-work gatherings we could find:

Call the shop at (801) 491-3551 to ask how the clubs work and whether newcomers can drop in.

Embroidery and needlework

Edith's Mary, a needlepoint shop at the Riverwoods in Provo, and Heindselman's downtown carry needlework supplies; our yarn guide has their hours. Secondhand Salamander, a nonprofit creative reuse shop at 2238 West 5400 South in Taylorsville, runs ticketed workshops that have included embroidery, knitting, sewing and crochet, and sells donated floss and fabric.

We did not find a publicly listed embroidery or needlework guild meeting in Utah County. If you know of one, tell us.

Spinning and fleece

Haven Fibers, at 9357 North Harvest Lane in Eagle Mountain, calls itself a Utah fiber and wool processing mill serving clients across the continental United States. It processes customers' raw fleece into yarn and felted goods (its Google reviewers mention alpaca, sheep, Icelandic wool and even bison down), and its site offers a new-customer discount on orders of 10 pounds or more. It is a mill, not a store.

We did not find a spinning guild that meets in Utah County. The weaving guild above welcomes all fiber artists, and its members are the people most likely to know where hand spinners gather.

Sewing for kids, and sewing for others

Kids' lessons. Besides the classes in our sewing machines guide, The Finishing School in Heber City (150 North Main Street, Suite 204E) teaches children's sewing lessons. Its Google reviewers describe children picking out fabric and sewing a throw pillow, start to finish, at a first lesson. Google lists Monday and Thursday evening hours plus Friday and Saturday mornings. For more children's classes, see our guide to kids' art, music and craft classes.

Service sewing. Stitching Hearts Worldwide, a nonprofit at 90 South Main Street in Pleasant Grove, makes and distributes quilts, mats and other handmade goods, and its Google reviewers describe volunteers sewing on site and taking projects home. The Utah Valley Quilt Guild lists it as a service partner. Our page on ward craft night ideas covers organizing a group service project.

Supplies, new and secondhand

For new yarn and fabric, start with the yarn and sewing guides above and our craft stores guide. For secondhand fiber, Making Space Thrift at 475 North Freedom Boulevard in Provo is built for sewists and fiber artists; our guide to thrifting craft supplies covers it with the other sources.
