Craft Stores in Utah Valley After JOANN: Every Store Still Open, What Each One Stocks, and Where the Fabric Went

JOANN's three Utah County stores closed in 2025. Here is every craft, fabric, yarn, paper and art-supply store left from Lehi to Spanish Fork, with hours.

There is no JOANN left in Utah Valley. The chain closed every one of its stores in the spring of 2025, including the three that served this county, and for sewists and quilters that took away the one big store built around fabric. What remains is two national chains, a handful of strong local specialty shops and a few places that never advertise. This guide lists every one we could confirm open, what each is good for, and the hours as posted on Google in October 2026.

One rule first: plan around Sunday. Every store here is closed that day.

What happened to JOANN

JOANN began in 1943 as the Cleveland Fabric Shop in Ohio, according to Axios. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2024, emerged a month later, and filed again in January 2025. On February 12, 2025, it announced it would close about 500 stores, and within two weeks the plan collapsed: GA Group, bidding with the company's term lenders, won an auction for substantially all of its assets and moved to wind the company down. By late April 2025, NPR member stations were reporting that all of its nearly 800 stores in 49 states would close by the end of May.

Utah had 13 JOANN stores, "from Logan to St. George," KSL reported. Three were in Utah County:

Google still shows all three listings, but with no hours. If you are new to the valley and a map app sends you to one, it is gone.

JOANN was not the first craft chain the valley lost. Roberts Arts and Crafts, which began in Provo in 1963, closed its stores in January 2012; our history of Provo Craft, Roberts and the Cricut covers that chapter.

The big boxes

Hobby Lobby (four stores)

Store Address
American Fork 240 NW State Street
Orem 360 West University Parkway
Spanish Fork 1304 North Canyon Creek Parkway
Saratoga Springs 771 North Redwood Road

All four were listed as open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and closed Sunday. Hobby Lobby is the closest thing left to a one-stop craft store. Its departments, as its own site lists them, include Fabric & Sewing, Yarn & Needle Art, Floral, Scrapbook & Paper Crafts, Art Supplies, Beads & Jewelry and Seasonal, and it does framing. Fabric selection varies by store, so call ahead for anything specific. The Spanish Fork store matters most to the south end of the county: from Payson's Main Street it is about 15 minutes by car (OSRM routing, no traffic).

Michaels (two stores)

Both were listed as open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and closed Sunday, an hour later on weeknights than Hobby Lobby. Michaels carries cutting machines and vinyl, kids' crafts, framing and party goods. Neither chain was built around fabric the way JOANN was. There is no Michaels south of Orem in the county. From Spanish Fork's Main Street, the Orem store is about 22 minutes away.

The Sunday fallback. The Michaels stores in Draper (215 East 12300 South) and Riverton (13282 Kestrel Range Road) were listed as open Sundays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Draper is the shorter drive from north Utah County.

Fabric

This is the hole JOANN left. No single store fills it, but four kinds of shop cover most of what it sold.

The Fabric Mill, 414 East 1400 South, Orem. The broadest fabric store left in the valley. It says it buys directly from mills and manufacturers, and it organizes stock by fabric type, so it is the place to look for fabric beyond quilting cotton. Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Harmony, 275 East Center Street, Provo. A downtown shop that mixes apparel fabric, quilting fabric, yarn, trims and lace with gifts and home goods. Its hours run later than most: Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday to Saturday until 8.

Quilt shops and sewing-machine dealers. For quilting cotton, the independent quilt shops (The Quilter's Crossing in American Fork, American Quilting in Orem, Corn Wagon Quilt Co. in Springville) and the dealers that sell fabric alongside machines (Dave's Bernina at 2017 North 550 West in Provo, Nuttall's at 518 North 2000 West in Pleasant Grove) are the specialists. Our quilt shop guide covers each one, and our guide to sewing machines in Utah Valley covers the dealers' classes and repair counters.

Mapleton Fabric, 715 West 1600 North, Mapleton. Listed on Google as a fabric store you visit by appointment ("schedule to visit"), with no posted hours. Call or message first.

Secondhand and creative reuse

Making Space Thrift, 475 North Freedom Boulevard, Provo. A thrift store built around makers. Its site describes it as a store for cosplayers, new and experienced sewists, fiber artists and lovers of vintage, stocked from donations by people letting go of supplies they no longer use. Expect fabric, yarn, notions and a smaller general craft section, at thrift prices. It moved to this Provo location recently and is open Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday until 8. If you are clearing out a craft room, this is where to donate. Thrift and estate-sale strategies for supplies are in thrifting craft supplies.

The general thrift stores matter too. The DI and the valley's other thrift stores get craft supplies in waves, especially after estate cleanouts. Our thrift and vintage guide covers them.

Yarn and needlework

Heindselman's Yarn and Needlework, 176 West Center Street, Provo. Downtown's yarn shop, with a long history on Center Street. Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday until 8, Saturday until 6. Weaving, spinning and embroidery are covered in our fiber arts guide.

Edith's Mary, 4801 North University Avenue, Suite 320, Provo. A needlepoint shop in the Riverwoods, selling canvases and floss. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Petit Fours & Purls, Lehi. A yarn shop and tea room on Main Street that is moving down the block in November 2026. Our yarn shop guide has the details and the weekly stitch nights.

Paper, scrapbooking and printing

The Paper Store and More, 1786 South State Street, Orem. Paper, cardstock, envelopes and stationery, sold in the store and online. Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday until 3.

Pebbles in my Pocket, 1132 South State Street, Orem. The scrapbook store that was at the center of the county's scrapbooking years. Google still lists it, with recent shopper reviews mentioning custom cuts and current paper lines, but it posts no hours and its website has not been updated in years. Call (801) 226-2632 before making the trip.

Pioneer Party Gift & Copy, 154 West Main Street, Lehi. Not a craft store exactly, but a party, gift and print shop that prints banners and posters, which is what many craft projects need at the end. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Art supplies

Artist Corner, 380 South Orem Boulevard, Orem. A full art-supply store: paints, watercolor papers, canvases, clay and sculpting tools, screen-printing supplies, plus framing. Weekdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday until 5.

A&A Art and Frame, 661 North State Street, Orem. Supplies and full-service framing. Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday.

The specialists

A few Provo businesses supply one craft deeply:

Which store for which job

If you need Go to Town Note
Garment or home-dec fabric The Fabric Mill Orem Mon to Sat
Quilting cotton A quilt shop or dealer Valley-wide See quilt guide
Cricut and vinyl Michaels or Hobby Lobby AF, Orem, SF, Saratoga Closed Sunday
Good yarn Heindselman's or Harmony Provo Late Friday at Heindselman's
Cheap supplies Making Space Thrift Provo Open to 8 Thu to Sat
Fine-art supplies Artist Corner Orem Weekdays to 7

What the closing changed

Before 2025, a sewist in Spanish Fork had a fabric store on North Main. Now the nearest broad fabric selection is the Hobby Lobby on Canyon Creek Parkway or a drive to Orem. Shoppers in north county lost the American Fork JOANN and kept two big boxes on State Street. Students lost the University Parkway store between the two campuses, and the closest broad fabric stock is now The Fabric Mill on 1400 South or Harmony downtown.

The independents gained. Making Space Thrift's pitch, a store that recirculates fabric and yarn, makes more sense in a valley without a fabric chain, and the specialty shops are where classes, advice and a person who can match a thread color now live. For a new resident building a craft room from nothing, the practical route is the big box for basics, the local shop for the material that matters, and the thrift store before either.
