Crochet, Knitting and Yarn Shops in Utah Valley: The Shops, the Free Stitch Nights, and Where to Learn

Every yarn shop from Lehi to Provo, free stitch nights at a Lehi shop and the Eagle Mountain library, beginner lessons, secondhand yarn and a local fiber mill.

Utah Valley has fewer yarn shops than quilt shops, but the ones it has are good, and two of the valley's most reliable free gatherings for makers are knitting and crochet nights. If you just moved here with a half-finished sweater, this guide gets you to yarn, help and a table of people working on theirs. Hours are as listed on Google or the shops' sites in October 2026.

The shops

Heindselman's Yarn and Needlework, Provo

176 West Center Street. Downtown Provo's yarn shop and the one with the longest story. Atlas Obscura's listing says the shop first opened in 1904 as a side project for a local doctor's optometry practice, has stayed with the Heindselman family for three generations, and claims to be the oldest yarn shop in America. That last claim is the shop's own; we could not verify it independently.

The same listing describes handspun yarns, cricket looms for weaving and Japanese lace in the stock, and past classes in Celtic knitting, cardigans, reversible hats and farmers' market bags. Google reviewers mention brands such as Berroco and Cascade, a table in the middle of the store where knitters sit and work together, and a lounge for patient partners. Weaving, spinning and embroidery groups are in our fiber arts guide.

Hours: Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday until 8, Saturday until 6, closed Sunday. Phone (801) 373-5193.

Harmony, Provo

275 East Center Street. A downtown shop that mixes yarn and fabric (apparel and quilting) with trims, gifts and home goods. Its later hours make it the easiest after-work stop: Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday to Saturday until 8. With Heindselman's four blocks west, the two make a downtown yarn crawl.

Petit Fours & Purls, Lehi

Moving to 130 West Main Street in November 2026. A yarn shop and tea room on Lehi's Main Street, in a building reviewers describe as a historic landmark, with a selection they call carefully chosen and a full class calendar. The owner announced that the last day at the current address (98 West Main Street, Suite B, around back and upstairs) would be October 31, 2026, and that the shop would reopen around mid-November in a smaller, ground-floor, more accessible space half a block west, next door to Pioneer Party. The afternoon tea parties end with the move; the yarn, classes and stitch nights continue.

What it offers, from its site:

From downtown Provo, Lehi's Main Street is about 22 minutes by car (OSRM routing, no traffic).

The big boxes

Hobby Lobby lists a Yarn & Needle Art department, and its four Utah County stores (American Fork, Orem, Spanish Fork and Saratoga Springs) are open until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The two Michaels (American Fork and Orem) stay open until 9. Both are fine for acrylic basics, hooks and needles. For natural fibers and someone who can read your pattern with you, go to a yarn shop. Our craft stores guide lists every store's address.

Secondhand yarn

Making Space Thrift, 475 North Freedom Boulevard, Provo. A thrift store for makers that describes itself as a dream for "new and experienced sewists, fiber artists" and cosplayers, stocked from donated supplies. Yarn quantities are whatever came in, so buy enough for your whole project at once. Open Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday until 8. It is also the place to donate the yarn you will never use.

The general thrift stores and the DI turn up yarn too; see our thrift guide.

The stitch nights and clubs

These are free, recurring and open to newcomers.

Group Where When Ages
Stitch Night Petit Fours & Purls, Lehi Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m. All
Thread & Yarn Club Eagle Mountain Library Thursday evenings; Sept 3 and Oct 1, 2026 12 and up

Thread & Yarn Club, Eagle Mountain Library. At 1650 East Stagecoach Run, the library's club invites people to "knit, crochet, cross stitch, etc." and to bring a project they are working on or want to start; a staff member is available for crochet questions. The city calendar listed sessions on Thursday, September 3 (6 to 7 p.m.) and Thursday, October 1, 2026 (6 to 7:30 p.m.), both the first Thursday of the month. Check Eagle Mountain's events calendar for the next date.

Guilds. We did not find an active, publicly listed knitting or crochet guild for Utah County with a current meeting schedule. If you know of one, tell us. For quilting groups, see our quilt shop guide. For a group of your own, our guide to starting a craft group explains why a bring-your-own-project night is the format most likely to last.

Needlepoint, cross-stitch and embroidery

Edith's Mary, 4801 North University Avenue, Suite 320, Provo. A needlepoint shop in the Riverwoods with canvases, floss and, according to reviewers, a vending machine of small mini-canvases. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Heindselman's carries needlework supplies alongside yarn, as its name says.

For machine embroidery, the sewing dealers teach it; see our sewing machines guide.

From fleece to yarn

Haven Fibers, 9357 North Harvest Lane, Eagle Mountain. A fiber mill. Its Google reviews come from alpaca, sheep and even bison-fiber owners who had their fleece cleaned and spun into yarn or made into felted blankets. It keeps weekday business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and is a production service, not a retail yarn shop, so contact it before visiting.

Worth the drive

If you want more shops in one trip, Salt Lake County has several:

Both are closed Sunday.

Getting started, if you have never held a hook

  1. Pick crochet or knitting by the project you want. Crochet is quicker to start for amigurumi and blankets; knitting gives the drape of sweaters and socks.
  2. Buy a smooth, light-colored worsted yarn and the hook or needle size on its label. Dark and fuzzy yarns hide your stitches.
  3. Take one lesson or go to one stitch night. Ten minutes with someone watching your hands saves hours of video.
  4. Make something small first: a dishcloth, a hat, a granny square.

For children who want to learn, see our guide to kids' art, music and craft classes.

A stitch night also works as a low-pressure social night for newcomers, students and anyone who wants to meet people while their hands are busy. Our guide to craft nights by night of the week lists the other evening options.
