Remote Work in Utah Valley: Coworking From Lehi to Springville, Utah's Flat Tax, and the Domicile Rules That Catch Movers

Remote work from Utah Valley: coworking from Lehi to Springville, Utah's 4.45% flat income tax, and how Utah decides you are a resident for tax purposes.

Utah Valley is a good place to work remotely for the reasons people expect (mountains, cost compared with coastal metros, a deep pool of tech workers) and one reason they do not think about until April: Utah's tax rules apply to you the moment you become a resident, wherever your employer is. This guide covers both halves: where to work when the kitchen table stops working, and the tax basics, straight from the Utah State Tax Commission.

Two things this guide does not do. It does not list "remote-friendly employers," because we could not verify any list worth publishing; look at the job posting itself. And it is not tax advice; for your own situation, read the Tax Commission's instructions or ask a tax professional.

Coworking, county-wide

All addresses and hours below are from Google's business listings in October 2026. Prices change often and most spaces quote them on request, so we have not published any. For Provo in depth, including the free library option and how to pick a space in five minutes, read coworking and remote work in Provo.

An Orem licensing catch to check. A reviewer on Office Suites Utah's Google listing wrote that Orem does not issue business licenses to businesses that only use shared office space. We could not confirm that on Orem's website. If you plan to register a business at an Orem coworking address, call the city's business licensing office first.

Springville

Space Address Hours listed
Elevate Springville 135 W 900 N 24 hours
FocusHub 655 S 1200 W, Ste H 24 hours (bookable private offices)

South of Springville we found few listings branded as coworking in October 2026.

Listed hours may not be access hours. A Google listing can show staffed front-desk hours rather than when members can get in, and a 24-hour listing may apply only to members. Ask before you sign.

The tax basics, from the Tax Commission

One rate

Utah has a single income tax rate for all income levels. The 2026 Legislature's S.B. 60 cut it to 4.45 percent for tax year 2026, retroactive to January 1. The Tax Commission lists 4.5 percent for 2025, 4.55 percent for 2024 and 4.65 percent for 2023. For 2026 income, Utah taxable income is multiplied by 0.0445.

You are taxed where you live, on everything

The Tax Commission's instructions are direct: Utah residents who earn income in other states must pay Utah tax on that income. If the other state also taxes the same income, you may claim Utah's credit for income tax paid to another state (on Schedule A of the TC-40). There is no Utah credit for taxes paid to another country.

That is the central point for remote workers: a California or New York employer does not change the fact that, once you are a Utah resident, Utah taxes your wages.

When you become a resident: domicile

Utah decides residency through domicile, defined in Utah Code Section 59-10-136 and summarized in the Tax Commission's general instructions.

Test 1. You are domiciled in Utah if you or your spouse:

Test 2. Even without Test 1, you are domiciled in Utah if you or your spouse have a permanent home here you intend to return to and have settled here with the intent to make it permanent. Utah weighs the evidence, including:

Also domiciled: anyone who maintains a place of abode in Utah and spends 183 or more days of the tax year here.

Part-year residents. If you move in or out mid-year, Utah taxes all your income during the resident period and Utah-source income during the non-resident period, filed on Schedule B (TC-40B).

Spouses. If one spouse is domiciled under Test 1, so is the other; under Test 2 there are narrow exceptions the Tax Commission spells out.

A practical checklist for a remote worker moving here

  1. Update your payroll state with your employer so Utah income tax is withheld. Otherwise you may owe a lump sum.
  2. Keep records of your move date for the part-year return.
  3. If your employer's state still withholds its tax, ask whether that state taxes non-residents working remotely, and keep the paperwork for Utah's credit.
  4. Driver's license and vehicle registration count toward domicile; so does voting. Out-of-state students in particular should read our paperwork guide for out-of-state students.
  5. Self-employed or gig income has its own rules; our gig work guide covers the tax side for side work.

The Tax Commission's help line is 801-297-2200 (1-800-662-4335 outside the Salt Lake area), weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Internet, briefly

Fast home internet is the remote worker's utility. Provo's fiber story, from the city-built iProvo network onward, is in our iProvo history. Availability varies by street in every city, so check providers by address before you sign a lease.

When remote work stops being remote

Many corridor jobs are hybrid. If you are considering a role that wants you in Lehi or Draper a few days a week, the corridor commute map and tech jobs in Utah Valley cover the trade-off. If you are thinking of turning remote freelancing into a company, see starting a business after college, and if your employer hands you a noncompete, Utah's noncompete law.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Utah's income tax rate in 2026?
Utah has a single rate for all income levels. S.B. 60 from the 2026 legislative session lowered it to 4.45 percent for tax year 2026, retroactive to January 1. It was 4.5 percent in 2025, 4.55 percent in 2024 and 4.65 percent in 2023.
If I work remotely for an out-of-state company, do I pay Utah income tax?
If you are a Utah resident, yes. The Tax Commission says Utah residents who earn income in other states must pay Utah tax on that income, and may claim a credit for income tax paid to another state when that state also taxes the same income.
How does Utah decide if I am a resident for tax purposes?
Through domicile tests in Utah Code Section 59-10-136. You are domiciled in Utah if, for example, you claim a child tax credit for a dependent in a Utah public school, enroll as a resident student at a Utah state college, or vote in Utah. Failing those, Utah weighs factors such as a Utah driver's license, a primary-residence property tax exemption, vehicle registration and where you earn income.
Does living in Utah 183 days make me a resident?
It can. The Tax Commission says you are considered domiciled if you maintain a place of abode in Utah and spend 183 or more days of the tax year in Utah.
Where can I cowork in Lehi?
Google listed Kiln at 2701 North Thanksgiving Way and 1850 West Ashton Boulevard, Spaces at 3300 Triumph Boulevard, WeWork at 1633 West Innovation Way, Regus at 3450 Triumph Boulevard, Vivo Offices at 2901 Bluegrass Boulevard and 19 Spaces at 139 Hunter's Grove Lane in October 2026.
Where can I cowork in Provo?
Google listed Kiln at 412 West Rivers Edge Drive, The Startup Building at 580 South 100 West, and Regus at 180 North University Avenue in October 2026. Our Provo coworking guide covers these and the free options, such as the library, in depth.
Can I run a business from a coworking space in Orem?
Check with Orem first. A reviewer on one Orem shared-office listing reported that Orem does not issue business licenses to businesses that only use shared office space. We could not confirm that on the city's site, so ask Orem's business licensing office before you sign.
Does Utah tax remote workers who live in Utah but work for a California or New York company?
Utah taxes its residents on all their income. Whether the employer's state also taxes you depends on that state's rules. If both states tax the same income, the Tax Commission says you may claim Utah's credit for income tax paid to another state.
