Utah Valley's information sector reports an average monthly wage of roughly $10,595 — the highest of any sector in the county, about half again the next one, and six times what leisure and hospitality reports.
It also employs a small fraction of the county's workers. Both facts are true and neither is usually mentioned alongside the other.
This guide is about working in that sector from a Provo base, which mostly means solving a geography problem.
The map, honestly
The tech concentration in Utah County runs north. Lehi is the center of gravity, with American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lindon and north Orem forming the rest of the corridor along I-15. This is what people mean by Silicon Slopes, though the term also reaches up into Salt Lake County.
Provo has its own cluster, and it is smaller and different in character: companies with university ties, the downtown startup and coworking scene, and technical teams inside large non-tech employers.
That last category is the most overlooked thing in this guide. BYU, UVU, Intermountain's hospital operations and the school districts all run substantial IT organizations — infrastructure, applications, data, security, support. Those are technical jobs in Provo with none of the corridor commute, and almost nobody searching for "tech jobs" finds them, because they are posted on institutional HR portals under institutional job titles. The commute, which is the actual decision
If you live in Provo and take a job in Lehi, the corridor becomes a daily fact of your life.
The route is I-15 north, it carries heavy volume at peak hours, and travel time varies substantially between a free-flow run and a rush-hour one. The variance is the difficult part — an unpredictable commute is harder to organize a life around than a long, consistent one.
FrontRunner runs the same north-south axis and is a genuine alternative, with the caveat that you have to solve both ends: getting to the station in Provo and getting from the station to an office that is probably not adjacent to it. For some routes and some offices this works well. For others it turns a thirty-minute drive into a ninety-minute chain.
Three things worth doing before accepting a corridor role:
Drive it at the actual hour. Not on a Saturday. At 8:10 on a Tuesday, and again at 5:30.
Price it. Fuel, wear, and the hours themselves. A meaningfully higher salary can be substantially eroded by ten hours a week of unpaid commuting, and that arithmetic belongs in the offer comparison rather than after it.
Ask about hybrid, specifically. The stated policy and the team's actual practice frequently differ. "Three days in office" and "everyone comes in Tuesday and Thursday" are different jobs.

Getting in without a computer science degree
This is the question most people arrive with, and the answer is more encouraging than the framing usually allows.
The entry point is adjacent, not central. Technical support, quality assurance, implementation, technical account management, customer success at technical products, sales engineering. These roles hire on communication, problem-solving and trainable technical depth rather than on a degree.
Something has to substitute for the credential. A portfolio of real work, certifications, a bootcamp record, or demonstrable domain expertise. "No degree and no evidence" does not clear the bar. "No degree and a body of work" frequently does.
Domain knowledge is a genuine asset. A technical company selling into healthcare, education, construction or finance needs people who understand those industries. If you have worked in one, that is a real credential in the right building — and it is the fastest route in for someone changing careers mid-stream.
Internal movement is much easier than external entry. This is the pattern that matters. Support to implementation to solutions to product or management is well-worn at local companies, and Utah Valley firms promote across functions more readily than larger organizations do. Getting into the building is the hard step; moving within it is not.
The corollary: take the adjacent role. A support position at a company you want to work at beats waiting eighteen months for an engineering role you are not yet credentialed for.
What the sector is actually made of
"Tech" flattens several quite different local industries.
Software and SaaS is the largest slice and the one people picture. Business software, marketing technology, developer tools.
Financial technology has a substantial Utah presence, and it comes with regulatory and compliance functions that hire people with non-technical backgrounds.

Startups, concentrated in Provo's downtown scene and around the universities. Higher variance in every dimension including whether the company exists in two years.
Each of these hires differently, and a search that treats them as one sector will produce a scattered result.
What it is like, and what to check
Utah Valley's tech scene has a distinct character worth knowing before you commit.
It skews young, partly because two large universities feed it continuously. It is more family-oriented than most technology hubs, which shows up in earlier office hours and a genuine emptying-out in the evening. Working hours tend to start and finish earlier than the coastal norm.
Compensation is high relative to the local cost base and generally below what the same role pays in a major coastal market. Whether that is favorable depends entirely on the housing arithmetic, and Utah County's housing costs have risen faster than local wages over the past decade, which has narrowed the advantage that comparison used to carry.
Equity is common at startups and its value distribution is what it always is: most of it is worth nothing and a small share is worth a great deal. Treat it as a lottery ticket attached to a salary, not as salary.
Specific things to ask:
- What is the actual in-office expectation for this team, this quarter?
- How does someone move from this role to the next one, and can you name someone who did?
- Is the equity meaningful, and what is the strike price and vesting schedule?
- Is the company funded, profitable, or neither? In a startup this is not an impolite question.
- What does the team's calendar look like — is this a place with core hours or a place with meetings at seven in the evening?
The student pipeline, and what it means for everyone else
Two universities graduating into one corridor shapes this market in ways that affect you whether or not you are a student.
BYU and UVU together produce a continuous supply of technically trained graduates, and local companies recruit heavily from both. The consequence for entry-level technical hiring is that junior roles are competitive in a way mid-level roles are not. Companies have a reliable annual supply of new graduates and no equivalent supply of people with four years of experience.
That asymmetry produces two practical conclusions.
If you are entering at the bottom, the internship route is materially easier than the direct-application route. Internships convert at a meaningful rate here, and companies treat them as the primary junior pipeline. Competing for a new-graduate opening against a cohort that already interned at the company is a harder contest than getting the internship was.
If you have three to seven years of experience, you are the scarce good. The local market has more demand at that level than the graduate pipeline can supply, which is why experienced people who move to Utah Valley often find the search shorter than they expected. This is also where negotiating leverage actually exists in this sector.
The mid-career picture also explains something about local compensation: the gap between junior and mid-level pay here is wider than the national norm, because the supply curves are so different at the two ends.
Interviewing in this market
A few local patterns worth expecting.
Cultural fit is weighted heavily, more so than in most technology markets. Interview processes here commonly include several conversations that are not technical assessments, and they are not filler.
Take-home exercises are common at small and mid-size companies, and reference-checking is thorough. In a geographically concentrated market where people know each other across companies, a back-channel reference is more likely than not.
Technical depth is assessed practically rather than through the abstract puzzle format associated with large coastal firms. Local companies tend to ask about work you have actually done.
Salary conversations happen earlier and are less coy than in some markets. Have a number ready and have a basis for it, since "what the county average is" is not a basis for a role in the highest-paying sector in that county.
Referral is the dominant channel. If you have any connection to anyone at the company, use it. In a market this size, the difference between an application and a referred application is substantial.
Whether to relocate north
For someone in Provo committed to the sector, the honest question eventually becomes whether to move up the corridor.
The case for moving: the commute disappears, and the north-county cities are closer to where the sector's growth is going rather than where it has been.
The case against: Provo is cheaper than Lehi, it has the university amenities and the downtown, and a hybrid arrangement makes the commute a two- or three-day problem rather than a five-day one. Housing costs rise noticeably as you move north through the corridor, which offsets part of the salary advantage that prompted the move.
The middle option people underuse is Orem and Lindon — meaningfully closer to the corridor's center of gravity, meaningfully cheaper than Lehi, and still connected to the UVX line and the Provo end of the valley. The concentration risk nobody mentions
One structural feature of this market deserves stating, because it affects how you should think about a career here rather than a single job.
Utah Valley's technology employment is concentrated in a small number of companies within a small geographic corridor. That is excellent when the sector is expanding — which it has been for most of two decades — and it carries a specific risk when it is not. In a market with many employers, a layoff means applying elsewhere. In a market with few, a downturn tends to hit several of them at once, and the local pool of open roles thins exactly when the pool of candidates thickens.
The practical hedges are ordinary and worth doing early rather than during a bad quarter: keep skills portable rather than deeply specific to one employer's internal stack, maintain relationships across companies rather than only within yours, and treat the institutional IT roles inside the universities and hospital systems as a genuine part of your market rather than a fallback — those employers do not track the technology business cycle.
None of this argues against the sector. It argues for entering it with the same clear eyes you would want about any concentrated local industry.
Where to look
Company career pages first. The local market moves through company sites and referrals more than through job boards. The boards lag.
The Silicon Slopes community channels, which carry openings and move faster than formal postings.

Referrals, which in a market this geographically concentrated carry more weight than elsewhere. The community is small enough that people know each other across companies.
Career fairs, noting that the BYU and UVU events are student-facing rather than open hiring events.
The realistic summary
Utah Valley's tech sector pays better than anything else in the county by a wide margin, employs fewer people than its reputation implies, sits mostly thirty minutes north of Provo, and is more open to non-traditional backgrounds than an outside observer would guess.
If you can solve the geography — through hybrid work, a genuine willingness to commute, or by targeting the institutional IT roles inside Provo itself — it is the highest-paying sector available in this valley. If you cannot solve the geography, the sector is largely closed regardless of your qualifications, and that constraint deserves to be confronted first rather than discovered after you accept.
