If you're in a Provo young single adult ward, home evening probably doesn't look like the family version. It's a small group from your ward, meeting on Monday night in someone's apartment or out somewhere cheap. If you're in a roommate apartment that isn't attached to an FHE group, it's whatever four or six roommates can agree on. Both are normal, and both are covered here.
This guide is for new BYU and UVU students, transfer students, and anyone who just moved into a Provo YSA ward. It explains what the Church's own policy says (less than you'd think, and more flexible), then gets to the practical part: what a group can do on a Monday night near campus for little or no money, checked on October 19, 2026.
What the handbook says, and doesn't
The Church's General Handbook, chapter 14, defines "young single adults" as ages 18 to 35. On home evening, its wording is short: "Leaders or members who desire to participate may organize one or more home evening groups for single adults and other groups for young single adults. Generally, those who participate do not have children at home." It adds that single members may gather "virtually or in person for home gospel study" and that Come, Follow Me may be a resource.
Three practical things follow.
It's voluntary. "Who desire to participate" is the phrase. Our YSA ward guide explains why FHE groups are where friendships form in Provo wards. But nobody's membership depends on showing up.
Groups can be organized by members, not just leaders. If your ward's groups don't suit your schedule, the handbook's wording leaves room for members to form one.
You get the building on Monday. Families are asked to keep Monday for themselves, and the handbook's activities chapter says no Church activities should be held after 6 p.m. on Mondays and that "leaders ensure that Church buildings and other facilities are closed on Monday nights." Then it makes an exception: "Young single adults and single adults may hold Church activities on Monday nights, including in Church buildings." Chapter 14 repeats it. So a YSA group that wants the gym for volleyball on a Monday is within policy. Your ward leaders schedule the building.
Chapter 14 also says that where there are many young single adults, leaders may recommend separate wards for ages 18 to 25 and 26 to 35. In Provo, that can mean your ward skews younger or older than you expected. Our singles tiers explainer lays out the whole structure.
The free list near campus
Everything here was free when we checked. Hours are from each place's own website where we could get them, otherwise Google's listing.
The Bean Museum's Family Home Evening program. BYU's Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum lists a Monday night Family Home Evening program at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m., and a private group can book one in advance. Admission is free and the museum is open until 9 p.m. on weekdays, per its site. For a group leader with nothing planned at 4 p.m. on Monday, this is the answer.
The BYU Museum of Art. Free and open until 9 p.m. on Mondays, according to the MOA. A group of twelve can split up, each pick one piece, and regroup in the lobby to argue about it.
The Springville Museum of Art. Free, and open on Monday nights only from 6 to 8 p.m., per its visit page. About 13 minutes south of downtown Provo by OSRM's estimate, which makes it a carpool evening.
Temple grounds. The Provo City Center Temple at 50 S. University Ave. is downtown, its building is listed closed on Mondays, and its grounds are open to walk. Our temple grounds FHE guide covers all six Utah Valley temples.
The BYU Botany Pond loop. A 1-mile, nearly flat loop at the north end of campus, per AllTrails. Dogs aren't allowed. Good for a walk-and-talk lesson in the long-light months; in mid-October the sun sets around 6:48 p.m., by Sunrise-Sunset.org's data.
The Provo City Library. Open until 9 p.m. on Mondays on its Google listing. Not a party, but a good place for a group to do a family history or Come, Follow Me evening with laptops.
The cheap list
| Activity | What we found | Where the price came from |
|---|---|---|
| Public skate, Peaks Ice Arena | $6 admission, $4 skate rental | Provo City's arena page |
| Monday Night Train, Heber City | $20 general admission, 7 p.m. departure | Railroad's booking page |
| Bowling, BYU Games Center | Open 1 to 10 p.m. Mon; open to all visitors | Hours from Google; access from BYU's page |
| Escape room, downtown Provo | Getout Games, 5:30 to 11 p.m. Mon | Google listing |
Prices for bowling and escape rooms weren't posted where we could verify them, so we haven't printed them. Call or check the booking page; escape rooms usually price per person with a group minimum.
Peaks Ice Arena. Public skating times change daily, so check the arena's calendar that afternoon. Provo City's page also lists College Night on Fridays from 10 p.m. to midnight at $6 including rentals, which is the better deal if your group can do Friday. Our Peaks guide has more.
The Monday Night Train. A 90-minute evening ride from Heber City along Deer Creek Reservoir, with sing-alongs and the occasional dance party, according to its booking page. The page also lists a group discount for 20 or more, by calling (435) 654-5601. It's roughly 40 minutes from Provo by OSRM's estimate, so leave by 6.
Late-night Monday options. Google's October 2026 listings had FatCats at 1200 N. University Ave. open until midnight, The Quarry climbing gym until 10 p.m., and the BYU Creamery on Ninth until 11 p.m.
The roommate-apartment version
If your apartment isn't part of a ward FHE group, or your group only meets every other week, the roommate version is smaller and easier. The handbook says home evening may include gospel study, serving others, music, a council to set goals and coordinate schedules, and recreation. A roommate apartment can do any of those in half an hour.
Make it a rotation, not a negotiation. One roommate handles the thought or discussion, one handles the treat, one picks the activity. Rotate weekly. It settles the "who's planning this" problem before the semester gets busy.
Use it as the apartment meeting. The handbook literally lists "a family council to set goals, resolve problems, and coordinate schedules." For four roommates, that's the dish rotation, the guest policy and the thermostat. Ten minutes of it, then dessert, is a home evening. Our finding roommates guide covers the conversations worth having early.
Do a Come, Follow Me discussion over a treat. The handbook names Come, Follow Me as a resource for single members studying together. One roommate reads the week's passage, everyone brings one question, and a Creamery run is the reward.
Serve someone on the floor. A roommate apartment can bake for the apartment downstairs. If you want a real organization, our FHE service guide explains which local pantries have evening shifts and their age rules (Tabitha's Way's Spanish Fork pantry has a Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. shift).
For FHE group leaders
Plan the semester, not the week. A list of twelve Mondays made in the first week saves twelve Sunday-night scrambles. Use the 52 ideas list and cross out anything over $10 a person.
Know the closures. The Provo City Center Temple building is closed November 30 to December 14, 2026, per the Church's temple page; the grounds remain the draw, but if your plan involved baptistry service that week, it won't work.
Watch the turnover. Provo YSA wards change a lot at semester breaks, which our YSA guide explains. The first two FHEs of a semester carry the most weight for new members, and simple and free beats ambitious.
Have a sitting-down option. Not everyone in a YSA ward wants to climb or skate. A museum or a temple walk lets everybody participate.
Mind the drive. Many students don't have cars. Campus and downtown Provo ideas are walkable for many students; Springville and Heber need carpools.
If you're new and nobody has invited you
Ask your ward's elders quorum or Relief Society presidency which FHE group you're in. If the answer is "none yet," the handbook's language leaves room for members to organize one, and the Bean Museum's Monday program is an easy first meeting to propose. Our guide to making friends in Provo covers the rest of the social map, and the first-semester survival guide covers the logistics.
