FHE Service Ideas Around Provo: The One-Hour Projects, and the Monday Catch Nobody Mentions

Family home evening service in Provo and Utah Valley: one-hour projects from local needs lists, which pantries take families on weeknights, and age minimums.

The easiest family home evening service project in Provo is one you do at your own kitchen table and deliver later in the week. That's not a compromise; it's how the calendar works. When we checked on October 19, 2026, none of the pantries or shelters we looked at had a volunteer shift on Monday evening. The ones with evening shifts run them on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

So this guide has two halves. The first is the one-hour projects that fit a Monday night, each tied to a real organization's posted needs. The second is the weeknight shifts worth moving home evening for, with the age rules that decide whether your kids can come.

The Monday catch, in a table

Organization Monday availability Evening volunteer shift Youngest volunteer
Tabitha's Way, Spanish Fork Closed to volunteers Sun and Mon Tue 5 to 8 p.m. 12, with adult under 16
Tabitha's Way, Pleasant Grove Mon 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wed 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. 12, with adult under 16
Tabitha's Way, Saratoga Springs Closed Sat to Mon Wed 4 to 7:30 p.m. 12, with adult under 16
Community Action, Provo pantry (groups) Weekdays 2 to 4 p.m. Wed 4 to 7 p.m. 16, groups of 10+

Sources: Tabitha's Way's volunteer pages for Spanish Fork, Pleasant Grove and Saratoga Springs, and Community Action Services and Food Bank's group listing on its volunteer sign-up platform.

The county's two shelters keep weekday hours too. Google's listings show South Utah Valley Animal Shelter in Spanish Fork open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and North Utah Valley Animal Services in Lindon open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Neither is an after-dinner option.

None of this means Monday service is impossible. It means the Monday version happens at home.

One-hour projects for a Monday night

A hygiene drive for the Food and Care Coalition

The Food and Care Coalition at 299 E. 900 S. in Provo provides meals, day services, housing and medical and dental care. Its website says volunteers contributed 50,000 hours last year, covering 57 percent of its labor needs. It posts a current needs list by category. In October 2026 the hygiene column included:

The hour: Before Monday, pick one column and set a budget. On Monday, make the shopping list together, assign each child an item to find, do the shopping run, then sort and bag at home. The coalition's collection-drive page asks groups to contact them first so they can help set a goal and choose items, and says you can drop the donations off or schedule a pickup.

Delivery: The east entrance past the gate, no appointment, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. That means the delivery happens on a Saturday morning or a weekday afternoon, which is a second, shorter outing the kids can do with one parent.

The lesson that fits: The handbook's description of home evening lists "serving others" right after gospel study. A family that has just held a pair of new socks and pictured who will wear them doesn't need a long talk.

A pantry supply drive for Tabitha's Way

Tabitha's Way runs food pantries in Spanish Fork, Pleasant Grove and Saratoga Springs. Each of its volunteer pages lists "year-round food and supply drives" among its other service opportunities and asks you to contact the volunteer coordinator or pantry managers for remote service opportunities. The Pleasant Grove page gives a contact: Tiffany, at (801) 692-1881, Tuesday through Friday 9 to 2. Call during the week, ask what's short right now, and build Monday around it.

Plan a weeknight shift as the Monday activity

This sounds like cheating. It isn't. Sign-up for Tabitha's Way runs through the links on each pantry's page, and the Pleasant Grove page also lists a group sign-up. Making the decision, checking whose ages qualify, picking the night and signing up is a real family council, which the handbook names as part of home evening. Then go on the night you chose.

The weeknight shifts worth moving home evening for

The Church's General Handbook says home evening "may be held on the Sabbath or other days and times." A Tuesday or Wednesday works.

Tabitha's Way, Spanish Fork: Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m.

The longest evening window on the list. Volunteers "should be in good health, and at least 12 years of age," and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The page is candid that "many of our current processes require repetitive, heavy lifting and vigorous work." For a family with a 12- and a 14-year-old, this is a good fit. For a family whose oldest is 9, it isn't, and the at-home drive above is.

Tabitha's Way, Pleasant Grove: Wednesday 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Same age rule. The Pleasant Grove page describes the work as preparing for clients, handing out food, sorting donations, and cleaning and organizing, and notes that "a very few" of its processes involve heavy lifting. It also says many volunteers serve for one to three hours, and many come once.

Tabitha's Way, Saratoga Springs: Wednesday 4 to 7:30 p.m.

A satellite pantry where one to four volunteers serve together; larger groups are sent to Pleasant Grove. Good for a parent and two teenagers.

Community Action's Provo pantry: Wednesday 4 to 7 p.m., groups only

Community Action Services and Food Bank, at 815 S. Freedom Blvd., Suite 100, lists a group opportunity in its Provo food pantry on weekdays from 2 to 4 p.m. or Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. Volunteers must be 16 or older and the group must have at least 10 people. That rules out most single families. It works for two or three families with teenagers, or a youth group.

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County: for families with older teens

Habitat's volunteer page says volunteers must be 16 to work on an active build site and 18 to use power tools, and that neighborhood, school and church groups of up to 10 can volunteer together. Build days aren't evening shifts, so this is a Saturday project rather than a home evening one, but the planning can be.

How to choose by your children's ages

Under 12: Stay with the at-home projects. None of the on-site pantry shifts above accepts children under 12.

12 to 15: Tabitha's Way's evening shifts, with a parent volunteering alongside.

16 and up: Everything above, including Community Action's group shift and Habitat build sites.

The age limits are the organizations' rules, not suggestions. Don't bring a younger sibling to sit in a corner unless you've asked first.

Finding something else

JustServe. JustServe.org is, in its own words, "provided as a free service by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," and organizations post volunteer projects there by location. Its listings load in a browser and change constantly, so we haven't reproduced any here. Search it for Provo the week you plan to serve, and filter for family-friendly projects.

United Way of Utah County. Its volunteer center lists needs from vetted local partner agencies and is the other place to search.

Utah Valley Refugees. The Provo organization's website describes monthly "Refugees Give Back" service projects and an interest form. It lists its office at 125 E. 300 S. Call 801-850-6013 before assuming a family project exists.

Our broader guide to volunteering in Utah Valley covers food, housing, refugees, animals and seniors. The food bank volunteering guide goes deeper on pantries, and service hours for students covers documentation if your teenager needs hours for school or a scholarship.

Close to home

Some of the best home evening service needs no organization at all: the neighbor whose leaves are still on the lawn in November, the widow two doors down whose walk needs shoveling. We haven't listed specific examples because they're yours to know. The organizations above are for weeks when you'd like the service to go somewhere you wouldn't otherwise reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can families volunteer on a Monday night in Provo?
Rarely at an organization's site. When we checked in October 2026, the Utah Valley food pantries and animal shelters we looked at had no Monday evening volunteer shifts: Tabitha's Way's Spanish Fork and Saratoga Springs pantries are closed to volunteers on Mondays, and the two county shelters' Google listings close at 5 or 5:30 p.m. Monday service usually means a project at home that you deliver later, or moving home evening to a Tuesday or Wednesday.
What is the minimum age to volunteer at a Utah County food pantry?
It depends on the pantry. Tabitha's Way, with pantries in Spanish Fork, Pleasant Grove and Saratoga Springs, says volunteers should be at least 12, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Community Action Services and Food Bank's group listing for its Provo pantry requires volunteers to be 16 or older, in groups of at least 10.
Which Utah Valley pantries have evening volunteer shifts?
As listed in October 2026: Tabitha's Way Spanish Fork on Tuesdays from 5 to 8 p.m.; Tabitha's Way Pleasant Grove on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Tabitha's Way Saratoga Springs on Wednesdays from 4 to 7:30 p.m., for one to four volunteers at a time; and Community Action's Provo pantry for groups on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m.
What does the Food and Care Coalition in Provo need donated?
Its current needs list in October 2026 included hygiene items such as socks, lip balm, deodorant, toothpaste, travel-size lotion and sunscreen, razors and new underwear, kitchen staples such as oatmeal, eggs and powdered milk, and cleaning supplies. Drop-off is at 299 E. 900 S., east entrance, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no appointment.
How old do you have to be to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in Utah County?
Habitat for Humanity of Utah County says volunteers must be 16 or older to work on an active build site and 18 or older to use power tools. Neighborhood, school and church groups of up to 10 can sign up together.
What is JustServe?
JustServe.org is a volunteer-listing website provided as a free service by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to the site. Organizations post projects there and anyone can search them. The listings change constantly, so search it the week you plan to serve.
Is service a normal part of family home evening?
Yes. The Church's General Handbook lists serving others among the things home evening may include, alongside gospel study, music, family councils and recreation, and it says home evening may be held on days other than Monday.
Can a family run a collection drive for a Provo charity?
Yes. The Food and Care Coalition's collection-drive page says families, churches, companies and neighborhood groups can organize one; it asks you to contact them first so they can help set a goal and choose items from the current needs list, and you can drop the donations off or schedule a pickup.
