The Monday Problem: What Is Really Open on FHE Night in Utah Valley, the Closures and the Deals

What closes on Monday night in Utah Valley, what opens only on Mondays, and which family deals exist, checked Monday, October 19, 2026 across the county.

Utah Valley does not close on Monday nights. The library is open, the rink is open, the escape rooms open at dinnertime and the Creamery serves until 11. What goes dark on Monday evening is specific, and once you know the list, planning home evening gets easier.

We checked everything on this page on Monday, October 19, 2026, across the county, from each place's own website where it posts hours and from its Google listing otherwise. Our Provo Monday guide covers Provo city alone in more depth; this page is the countywide version, organized by what closes, what opens specially, and what's cheaper.

Why Monday is different, in two sentences

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asks members to hold a weekly home evening and keeps Monday clear for it: its General Handbook says no Church activities, meetings or baptismal services should be held after 6 p.m. on Mondays and that Church buildings are to be closed on Monday nights. The Church's own history of the program adds that in 1994 President Howard W. Hunter directed that Church buildings be closed on Monday nights, and that in 1999 the First Presidency urged members to encourage their communities and schools to avoid scheduling activities that would draw children or parents away from home on Monday evenings.

That second request is the source of the reputation. It was an encouragement, not a rule for anyone outside the Church, and businesses mostly keep ordinary hours. The handbook also says home evening "may be held on the Sabbath or other days and times," so plenty of local families don't hold it on Monday at all.

What closes on Monday night

Church buildings and activities

After 6 p.m. on Monday, ward and stake activities stop and meetinghouses close, per the handbook. Two exceptions are written in: "Young single adults and single adults may hold Church activities on Monday nights, including in Church buildings," and a family may hold an activity in a Church building on a Monday night under the building-use guidelines. If you see lights on in a stake center on Monday, it's probably a YSA group. Our YSA and roommate FHE guide explains.

Most temple buildings, all day

Google's listings showed:

Temple Monday
Provo City Center Closed
Orem Closed
Payson Closed
Saratoga Springs Closed
Mount Timpanogos 7 to 11 a.m. only
Lindon No hours listed (its Church page lists a closure October 19 to November 2, 2026)

The grounds are another matter: Visit Utah says all are welcome to visit them, and with the buildings closed, Monday evening is usually the quietest time to walk them. Our temple grounds FHE guide goes temple by temple.

Some museums, and the daytime ones

Volunteer shifts

The food pantries we checked don't run Monday evening shifts. Tabitha's Way lists its Spanish Fork pantry as closed to volunteers Sunday and Monday and its Saratoga Springs pantry closed Saturday through Monday; its Pleasant Grove pantry takes volunteers Monday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Their evening shifts are Tuesday (Spanish Fork, 5 to 8 p.m.) and Wednesday (Pleasant Grove and Saratoga Springs). Both county animal shelters' Google listings close by 5:30 p.m. Our FHE service guide covers the work-arounds.

A few food spots that were never evening places

The Kolache Place in Provo is listed 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., every day it's open. Some bakeries and breakfast spots run that way. It isn't a Monday closure, but it's the most common "we drove there and it was closed" story on a Monday night.

What's open only, or especially, on Monday

These are the reason to keep home evening on Monday if you can.

The Springville Museum of Art's Monday night. Free. On Mondays it opens only in the evening, 6 to 8 p.m., per its visit page. Our Springville Museum of Art guide has more.

The Bean Museum's Family Home Evening program. BYU's Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum lists a Monday-night FHE program at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m., free, and an extra 6:30 Monday session of its weeknight Biomes program. See our Bean Museum guide.

The Heber Valley Railroad's Monday Night Train. A 90-minute ride at 7 p.m. on "most Monday evenings," per its booking page, with sing-alongs and an Old West gunfight show before boarding. In October the railroad's Halloween Express runs on Mondays as well as Thursdays and Fridays. Our Heber Valley Railroad guide covers the rest.

The Springville Sunset Farmers Market. Every Monday June through October at Civic Center Park, 5 to 9 p.m. through September and 5 to 8 p.m. in October, according to Springville's city page. Our farmers markets by day guide covers the others.

American Fork's Monday concerts, in summer. The Harrington Center's free Concerts in the Park ran Mondays June 29 to August 17 in 2026 at the American Fork Amphitheater, at 7 p.m. with food trucks from 6:30, per the American Fork Citizen. See our amphitheater guide.

Monday openings at the Ruth. The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater in Pleasant Grove opens its runs on Mondays: its season list shows Disney's Frozen from November 23, 2026 and A Christmas Carol from November 30, 2026, both Mondays.

The deals we could confirm

We went looking for Monday family deals in Utah County and found fewer than the internet suggests. What we could confirm on an official page:

The Monday Night Train family pass. $72 for up to six passengers age 2 and up, or $20 per general admission ticket; toddlers 1 and under ride free, per the railroad's booking page.

Peaks Ice Arena's standing prices. Not a Monday deal, but the cheapest active evening on the list: $6 admission, $4 skate rental, $5 for a walker, per Provo City. Its discount night is Friday's College Night, $6 with rentals.

Classic Fun Center's Monday Family Night, in Sandy. Its website advertises Family Night on Mondays from 4 to 9 p.m. with "unlimited activities, special discounts, and family-only deals," without a posted price. That's the Sandy location, in Salt Lake County. The Orem rink at 250 S. State St., Classic Skating, was listed open until 9 p.m. on Mondays, but we couldn't find an official page for Orem deals.

Free, which beats any deal. The Springville Museum of Art's Monday night, the Bean Museum's FHE program, the BYU Museum of Art, the libraries and temple grounds.

What we didn't find. A restaurant "kids eat free on Monday" deal in Utah County that we could confirm on an official page. Chain promotions change location by location; our kids eat free tonight guide explains how to check one before you go, including the app-activation trap.

Planning around the problem

If your activity closes Monday, move home evening. The handbook allows it. The Hutchings Museum's Wednesday late hours and the pantries' Tuesday and Wednesday shifts all reward a family willing to shift a night.

Watch the holiday Mondays. In 2027, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is January 18, Presidents' Day February 15, Memorial Day May 31, Independence Day observed Monday, July 5, Labor Day September 6 and Columbus Day October 11. Hours shift on those days, and our FHE day-trip guide turns them into full-day plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Utah Valley shut down on Monday nights for family home evening?
No. Libraries, recreation centers, rinks, bowling alleys, escape rooms and most restaurants keep normal Monday hours. What closes is narrower: Church meetinghouses and activities after 6 p.m., most temple buildings for the whole day, and a handful of museums and volunteer sites that keep weekday-daytime or Tuesday-to-Saturday schedules.
Why are churches closed on Monday nights in Utah?
Church policy. The General Handbook of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says no Church activities, meetings or baptismal services should be held after 6 p.m. on Mondays and that leaders ensure Church buildings are closed on Monday nights. Young single adults and single adults are an exception, and a family may hold an activity in a Church building on a Monday night under the building-use rules.
Are temples closed on Mondays in Utah Valley?
Mostly. Google's listings checked October 19, 2026 showed the Provo City Center, Orem, Payson and Saratoga Springs temples closed all day Monday, and the Mount Timpanogos Temple open only from 7 to 11 a.m. The grounds are separate from the buildings and remain a common Monday evening walk.
Is anything in Utah Valley open only on Monday night?
The Springville Museum of Art opens on Mondays only in the evening, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Bean Life Science Museum runs a Family Home Evening program on Monday nights at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. The Heber Valley Railroad runs a Monday Night Train at 7 p.m. And in season, Springville's Sunset Farmers Market runs Monday evenings from June through October.
Are there Monday family deals near Provo?
A few verifiable ones. The Heber Valley Railroad's Monday Night Train listed a $72 family pass for up to six riders. Classic Fun Center in Sandy, in Salt Lake County, advertises a Family Night on Mondays from 4 to 9 p.m. with unlimited activities and family deals, without posting a price. We did not find a restaurant 'kids eat free Monday' deal in Utah County that we could confirm on an official page.
What museums are closed on Monday in Utah County?
Among those we checked: the Hutchings Museum in Lehi was listed closed on Mondays. BYU's Museum of Paleontology and Museum of Peoples and Cultures are open on Mondays but close at 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Point's museums, the Bean Life Science Museum and the BYU Museum of Art all stay open into the evening.
Can you volunteer on a Monday night in Utah County?
Rarely at a site. Tabitha's Way's Spanish Fork and Saratoga Springs food pantries are closed to volunteers on Mondays, and its Pleasant Grove pantry's Monday volunteer hours end at 2 p.m. The pantries' evening shifts are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Collection drives done at home are the usual Monday service project.
When were these hours checked?
On Monday, October 19, 2026, from each place's own website where it published hours and from its Google listing otherwise. Hours change with semesters, holidays and seasons, so check again before you go.
