J. Dawgs: The Provo Hot Dog Shack Near BYU, Its Short Menu, the Special Sauce and Every Location

J. Dawgs started in 2004 as a 10-by-10-foot shack near BYU, funded by a pawned guitar. The menu is still short: Polish or beef dogs, fries and a family special sauce. Every location, including LaVell Edwards Stadium.

J. Dawgs is Provo's homegrown hot dog stand. It started in 2004 as a 10-by-10-foot shack in Provo, and its menu has barely grown since: Polish or beef dogs, fries, drinks and a family special sauce. The original is at 858 N. 700 E., a short walk from campus.

Locations and menu are from J. Dawgs' own website, and the founding story from the Deseret News and KSL's coverage of its 20th anniversary in 2024.

The menu

J. Dawgs keeps it short:

Dawgs Polish or beef
Lil Dawgs
Fries
Drinks
Combo A dawg, fries and a drink
Toppings Special sauce, onion, sauerkraut, banana peppers, jalapeños, pickles

The company says it uses "all-natural meat," buns "locally baked... fresh every single day," and "a homemade sauce that's been in our family for a couple of generations." It doesn't post prices on its site; order online through J. Dawgs' ordering link to see current ones.

The story

The Deseret News reported that founder Jayson Edwards, a BYU student back from a mission in Toronto, noticed the street vendors grilling hot dogs there and that Provo had nothing like them. In 2004 he pawned his Fender Telecaster to rebuild a 10-foot-by-10-foot shack in Provo. He later met his wife at that first shop's service window. By the 20th anniversary in 2024, the paper counted eight restaurants from Logan to Spanish Fork and about 240 employees; the company's site now lists nine, including St. George. Its approach, Edwards told the paper, is to "keep things simple and treat people well."

J. Dawgs' own version, on its homepage: a shack "dedicated to a few simple ideas: that good should be simple, that tin foil is better than plates and that napkins are always optional."
