Orem Garbage and Recycling: Pickup Days, the $18.86 Monthly Rate, Holiday Delays and Christmas Tree Drop-Off

Orem picks up garbage weekly and recycling every other week on the same day. The first can plus recycling is $18.86 a month, green waste $7.28. Holiday delays, the Lindon landfill and where to leave your Christmas tree.

Orem picks up garbage once a week and recycling every other week, on the same day. The first garbage can plus a recycling can costs $18.86 a month on your city utility bill. When a weekday holiday hits, pickup slides one day for the rest of that week, and after Christmas the city opens Christmas tree drop-off sites from Dec. 26 to Jan. 18.

Everything below is from Orem City's garbage, recycling, fall clean-up and Christmas tree pages, read Nov. 7, 2026. Waste Management provides the collection under contract with the city.

Costs

Service Per month
First garbage can + recycling $18.86
Second garbage can $12.86
Extra recycling can $4.97
Green waste can $7.28

You get a garbage can and a recycling can when you open a city utility account. For a new, broken, lost or stolen can, or a missed pickup, call or text 801-229-7000. Our Living in Orem guide covers the rest of setting up a household there.

Holiday delays

If a holiday falls on a weekday, collection may be delayed one day for the rest of the week, and normal service resumes the next week. Weekend holidays don't change anything. The delay holidays:

So in 2026, Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, may push Thursday and Friday pickups back a day, and Christmas on Friday, Dec. 25, may push Friday's to Saturday.

Recycling and green waste

Recycling goes out every other week. Orem's partner, Recycle Coach, has a free app with your schedule and a what-goes-where search. One recent change: the city says Waste Management's plastic film recycling pilot has ended, so keep plastic bags and wrap out of the bin.

The green waste can is unusual: Orem says "both yard waste and regular garbage are allowed," and it's emptied year-round. If you're paying for a second garbage can, the $7.28 green can is the cheaper way to add capacity.

Christmas tree drop-off

From Dec. 26 through Jan. 18, Orem Public Works sets out drop-off sites and dumpsters for real Christmas trees only. Remove every decoration and light. Flocked trees and household trash aren't accepted; take those to the North Utah County Transfer Station in Lindon. Don't leave a tree on the street or in a school or church dumpster.

Taking a load to the landfill

When it won't fit in the can, take it to North Pointe, the North Utah County transfer station at 2000 W. 200 S. in Lindon: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Orem is a participating city, so residents get a reduced rate; bring an ID with your Orem address or a utility bill. Green-waste-only loads are free for Orem residents if the load is covered.

From Orem's clean-up page, North Pointe's charges for some common items:

Item Cost
Mattress $20 each
Refrigerator $15 each
Fluorescent bulbs $0.30 per foot
Electronics First $11 covered by a free trash pass, then $10 per item
Clean fill (concrete, brick, rock), pickup-size load $12

Used oil up to 5 gallons goes to Orem Public Works. Paint has to be dried out first; kitty litter or sawdust speeds it up.

Fall clean-up

Orem sets out free clean-up dumpsters for residents. The fall 2026 round ran Sept. 14-19 at Nielsen's Grove Park and Sept. 21-26 at Palisade Park, with trash, green waste and metal dumpsters, weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any Orem resident could use either site.
