UDOT will close the Alpine Loop (SR-92) for the winter at 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026. It is the first seasonal winter road closure of the year. After the closure, you can no longer drive between American Fork Canyon and Provo Canyon over the Alpine Loop, and the road stays shut until UDOT announces a reopening.

What this means for your plans
This weekend is the last chance to drive the loop this season. If you want the fall color or a last look at the high country, go before Monday morning and check UDOT Traffic first, since conditions at the top can change quickly. Our Alpine Loop scenic drive guide covers the stops, the 30-foot vehicle limit and the camping rules for the corridor.
Where you can still go
- Sundance: UDOT says Sundance remains reachable through Provo Canyon. See our guide to getting to Sundance and nearby ski resorts without a car.
- Tibble Fork Reservoir: reachable from the American Fork side, weather and road conditions permitting. Read about Tibble Fork Reservoir and American Fork Canyon.
- Skiing: the closure does not change the lower-canyon routes. For winter options see skiing near Provo.
How to check road status
UDOT asks drivers to check current conditions before traveling. Use the UDOT Traffic website at udottraffic.utah.gov, the UDOT Traffic app for iPhone and Android, or the seasonal roads page at udottraffic.utah.gov/seasonalroads. UDOT also posts on X at @UDOTTRAFFIC, plus Facebook and Instagram.
Why UDOT closes it
UDOT closes several high-elevation roads each winter. Its stated reason is safety: heavy snow and rapidly changing conditions make travel hazardous. The agency says reopening dates depend on weather, snowpack and maintenance needs, so no date can be promised. For reference, UDOT reopened SR-92 on May 22 this year.
Also this week in Utah Valley traffic
In Lehi, UDOT is closing southbound I-15 lanes at 2100 North (Exit 282) overnight on Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, starting at 7 p.m. Traffic drops to one lane by midnight and all lanes reopen by 4 a.m. Overnight lane closures in both directions follow through next week. UDOT says drivers should expect a new traffic pattern at the interchange through May 2027 while crews work on the 2100 North project, and that schedules depend on weather.
This story will be updated if UDOT changes the closure time. Photos to come.
