Football still owns the Provo fall, but the Marriott Center is where the city spends its winter — and this year's version of BYU basketball will look almost nothing like last year's. Kevin Young enters his third season with exactly one returning starter.
BYU announced its non-conference schedule on July 20. Here is what it means for anyone planning a winter of basketball in Utah County.

Eight of the fourteen are at home. Most tip times were still unset when the schedule was announced — the same pattern BYU football fans have learned to live with, where television partners pick windows late. Treat any time you see quoted in September as provisional.
The 18-game Big 12 schedule sits on top of this. Kansas comes to Provo for only the second time ever; the road trips include Houston, Iowa State, UCF, Colorado and Arizona State.

A roster rebuilt almost from scratch
Retaining Robert Wright III was the offseason. He entered the transfer portal and took a visit to Kentucky before returning, and Young has said publicly he believes Wright can be the best point guard in college basketball.
Everyone else around him is new or newly promoted. Collin Chandler arrives from Kentucky as the headline portal addition, a shooter BYU badly needed. Tyler Betsey comes from Syracuse and Jake Wahlin from Clemson, both long wings. Bruce Branch III is the five-star freshman — Young's third in three years, after Egor Demin and AJ Dybantsa — listed at 6-7 with a 7-1 wingspan.
The local note worth flagging: Dean Rueckert, out of Timpview High, is on the roster. A Provo kid on the Marriott Center floor is not a small thing in this town.
What to actually expect
Two straight seasons under Young have produced a Sweet Sixteen and a first-round exit, 49-22 overall. The 2025-26 group went 9-9 in conference play and shot poorly once Richie Saunders got hurt, which is the plainest explanation for why this roster was rebuilt around shooting and length.

The honest read: this is a team with one proven starter, a lot of new shooting, and a center rotation that came together late. The Maui field — Washington first, then Clemson or Ole Miss — will tell you more in three days over Thanksgiving than the whole November home stand will.

The 18-game Big 12 schedule adds more, including Kansas making only its second-ever trip to Provo.
Who does BYU play in the Maui Invitational?
BYU opens the Southwest Maui Invitational against Washington on Monday, November 23 at 3 p.m. MST on ESPN2, at the Lahaina Civic Center. The November 24 game is against the Clemson–Ole Miss winner, and the third game on November 25 depends on results. It is BYU's fifth appearance in the tournament and its first since 2019, when the Cougars reached the semifinals.
Is BYU playing any games in Salt Lake City this season?
Two, both at the Delta Center: Ohio State on November 2 and Northwestern on December 5. Those are neutral-site games rather than home games, which matters for tickets — they are not part of a Marriott Center season-ticket package. For Utah County fans the drive is about 45 minutes each way on I-15, and FrontRunner runs to Salt Lake Central for the weeknight game.
