BYU gymnastics holds its home meets in the Marriott Center, the same arena of nearly 18,000 seats that hosts basketball and devotionals. We checked that before writing, because a few things about this program are easy to get wrong: BYU's ticket office says "all home meets are at the Marriott Center," all four 2026 home meets were there, and the program has a brand-new head coach. One older line on BYU's own facilities page still says the team competes in the Smith Fieldhouse "and occasionally in the Marriott Center"; the same page, two paragraphs up, says competition "has transitioned fully into the Marriott Center." The schedule and the ticket office agree with the second version.
So the premise holds. Here is what a meet night is, what 2026 looked like, and what to know before the 2027 season.
What a meet is, if you have never been
A college gymnastics meet is short and easy to follow. Each team rotates through four events, vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor, and the top five of six scores on each event count toward a team total out of 200. The numbers you will see on the board are in the 9.8s and 9.9s; BYU's 2026 team scores ran from about 195 to 197.
Two things make it a good first college sport for a family:
- Something is always happening. Teams compete on different apparatus at the same time, so there is little dead air.
- It is a two-hour night. BYU's 2026 home meets all started at 7 p.m. on Fridays.
The 2026 season
BYU went 11-9 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12, tied for second in the conference, its best Big 12 record since joining the league, and finished No. 22 nationally, according to BYU Athletics.
Home meets, all wins, all in the Marriott Center:
| Date (2026) | Opponent | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Fri., Jan. 9 | No. 7 Oregon State | W 195.675-194.525 |
| Fri., Jan. 16 | Boise State | W 196.300-195.025 |
| Fri., Jan. 30 | Arizona | W 196.300-195.250 |
| Fri., Feb. 20 | No. 16 Denver (senior night) | W 196.575-195.925 |
A March 6 home date against Iowa State is listed on BYU's schedule as an Iowa State forfeit.
The season's peak came on the road: a 197.225 win at No. 14 Clemson on March 13, BYU's highest team score since 2022 and tied for the 10th-highest in program history. The team's beam total that night, 49.550, ranks third all-time at BYU.
Postseason. BYU reached the evening session of the Big 12 Championship for the first time and placed third behind Utah and Denver at the Maverik Center in West Valley City. At the NCAA Tempe Regional it scored 196.250, third in its session behind Georgia and Michigan State.
Names to know. Junior Brynlee Andersen-Broekman made the All-Big 12 beam team and won three Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week awards; she qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championship as an individual on beam. Ava Jorgensen made the All-Big 12 bars team, and freshman Scarlett Sonnenberg tied for second on floor at the Big 12 meet with a 9.950. Senior Kylie Eaquinto was twice named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week.
The new coach
In April 2026 BYU announced it would not renew head coach Guard Young's contract after 11 seasons. Young, a two-time NCAA vault champion for BYU's men's team, had led the women to six top-25 finishes and three straight conference titles in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference before the move to the Big 12 in 2023.
On May 4, 2026, BYU named Natalie Broekman the seventh head coach in program history. She is a continuity hire with deep roots:
- A BYU gymnast from 1996 to 1999, team captain in 1999, and a former holder of the school all-around record (39.475).
- A U.S. elite national team member from 1992 to 1994.
- On staff since 2015, associate head coach since 2021 and the team's primary beam coach. BYU credits her with six of the program's top 10 beam scores.
She kept assistants Brogan Evanson and MaKenna Giles and in late May added Shannon Evans, a former BYU All-American on bars (2018) remembered nationally for a Super Mario-themed floor routine. Evans is from American Fork.
In her own words at the hiring: the program "has shaped me as a lifelong fan, former student-athlete and coach."
Why the Marriott Center, and why it matters
BYU's facilities page explains the move plainly: the program grew, and competition moved from the Fieldhouse into the Marriott Center "to accommodate larger crowds." BYU says the 2026 team averaged more than 3,000 fans per home meet, with more than 12,000 across four meets.
The Marriott Center is not new to gymnastics. The program's home attendance record, 10,334, came on February 3, 1995, for a tri-meet with Utah and Georgia in the Marriott Center, and one of the most-remembered wins in program history, a 196.050 to 195.975 upset of No. 7 Utah in 1998, happened there too.
For a spectator, the change means a big-arena night: concourse food, plenty of seats in most sections, and an easy ticket compared with basketball in the same building. For context on how the Marriott Center works on a busier night, our BYU basketball game-day guide covers the building, entrances and concessions.
A tradition older than the NCAA
BYU's own history page traces the sport to the early 1960s in the women's physical education department, when instructors Cyntha Hirst and Lu Wallace started it with improvised equipment, including a vaulting horse adapted from a men's side horse, and Wallace taught bars and beam from a Japanese gymnastics textbook. The first competitive team formed in 1964, practicing late at night in the Women's Gym on University Avenue, and BYU hosted the state's first girls' gymnastics meet that year.
A few markers from that history:
- 1970: BYU hosted the DGWS national championship in Provo and bought its first regulation 42-by-42-foot floor mat for it.
- 1976: the team toured Mexico City, which BYU calls the first international tour by a women's intercollegiate team.
- 1991: the first NCAA championship appearance as a team, finishing eighth.
- 1991 to 2005: eight NCAA championship appearances, all under the older 12-team format.
BYU has reached NCAA regionals almost every year since; it placed third in 2021, 2024 and 2026.
Tickets for 2027
The 2027 schedule had not been posted when we checked in October 2026. BYU's ticket office says:
- Season tickets "generally go on sale in November," with a presale ladder by Cougar Club level, then previous season ticket holders, then a public sale at 10 a.m. the following day.
- Single-meet tickets "typically go on sale in November or December," with a 10 a.m. Cougar Club presale and a noon public sale.
- Who needs a ticket: everyone 2 and older in reserved sections, 6 and older in general admission. General admission is first come, first served.
- Where: online at BYU's ticket site or in person at the Marriott Center ticket office.
Prices are on BYU's seating map, which in October 2026 was still the 2026 version, so we have not quoted any.
Students. The Olympic Sports ROC Pass ($75 in 2026-27, per BYU) covers gymnastics. This year BYU requires students to claim an individual ticket for every event, opening at 2 p.m. on meet day, and attendance counts toward football and men's basketball priority. Our ROC Pass guide has the details.
Getting there
Google lists the Marriott Center at East University Parkway and Campus Drive, Provo. It is the arena at the north end of campus, a short walk from Larry H. Miller Field. Our BYU campus visitor guide covers visitor parking.
For young gymnasts in the family
A BYU meet is a good night out for a child in a club program. If your family is choosing a gym, our guide to gymnastics, tumbling and cheer gyms in Utah Valley explains how the local clubs differ. BYU also runs gymnastics camps through BYU Sports Camps, linked from the program's page.
