How Class Registration Works at BYU and UVU: Priority Dates, Waitlists, Credit Limits and the Deadlines That Matter

BYU and UVU both set your registration day by credits earned. BYU's waitlist adds you automatically; UVU's gives you 24 hours. BYU caps undergraduates at 18 credits, UVU at 20. How each system works.

At both of Provo's universities, your registration day depends on how many credits you've earned, and the students with the most credits go first. After that the systems differ: BYU's waitlist adds you automatically when a seat opens, while UVU's gives you 24 hours to claim it. BYU caps undergraduates at 18 credits a semester without approval; UVU's default cap is 20.

Rules below are from BYU's Registrar and registration policy and UVU's registration pages, service center knowledge base and catalog, read Nov. 7, 2026.

BYU

Your priority date

BYU's Registrar says "your assigned priority registration date is determined by the number of credit hours earned through the most recently completed semester/term." Its registration policy puts graduate students and seniors first, then juniors, sophomores and freshmen by credits completed. New freshmen in their first semester get the last date. Dates post in MyMAP a few weeks before registration, with an email notice, and the Registrar says priority registration "begins at 12 a.m." on your day.

Before your day you can load classes into your registration cart. Some courses need a permission-to-add code; in MyMAP, pick the section, click "Use Add Code," enter it and add.

Waitlists and limits

BYU's policy: "Once a seat becomes available, the first student on the waitlist will automatically be added to the class." Except for R-suffix classes, you can waitlist only one section of a class. Because the add is automatic, a waitlisted class can land on your bill without another click, so drop waitlists you no longer want.

Undergraduates can take up to 18 credits a semester (9 in a spring or summer term) without approval. Twelve credits is full-time; 9 to 11.5 is three-quarter time. Auditing takes a permission-to-audit code within the first six class days, and audit hours count toward your credit maximum and tuition.

The full Winter 2027 calendar, with withdraw and finals dates, is in our BYU Winter 2027 semester dates.

UVU

Your priority date

UVU also registers by credits earned. For Spring 2027, groups opened at 7 a.m. from Oct. 19, 2026 (110 or more credits) through Oct. 27 (0+ credits). Open registration and the waitlist period for full-semester classes run through Jan. 19, 2027, and late add starts Jan. 20. You register in myUVU's Add/Drop System; the Registrar's page reminds students, "You must click Submit to save your changes." The UVU mobile app's My Classes tab also lets you register or add to a cart.

Waitlists and limits

UVU emails you your waitlist position, and you can opt in to texts. "Once your position in the queue is 0 you will have 24 hours to register for the course." Miss that window and the seat moves on, so turn on text alerts.

UVU's default maximum is 20 credits a semester for undergraduates (17 for graduate students); more takes approval from your department chair or director. Twelve credits is full-time. Dropping by the drop deadline keeps a class off your transcript; after it, a W appears and there's no refund. UVU's catalog warns that "simply stopping attendance does not qualify as an official withdrawal."

The Registrar's Office is in BA 113 in the Browning Administration Building, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.: call 801-863-8493 or text 801-876-6499. Every Spring 2027 deadline is in our UVU Spring 2027 semester dates.
