Tuition comes due before class starts

This is the date students miss. BYU Financial Services says "tuition is due seven calendar days before the first day of class," which puts the Winter 2027 due date on Wednesday, December 30, 2026, in the middle of the holiday break. An unpaid balance puts a hold on your account, and the same page warns: "If you do not pay tuition by the Add/Drop Deadline, your classes may be dropped." That deadline is January 13.

If you need more time, BYU offers a short-term loan; for Winter 2027 it must be repaid by March 1, 2027. Financial Services says a student with an open short-term loan can't register or add classes to a cart until it is paid, and after the deadline interest accrues at 12% a year. For what the semester costs, see BYU tuition for 2026-27.

Add/drop and withdraw, in plain terms

Through January 13 you can add and drop full-semester classes. After that, dropping becomes withdrawing, which is allowed through April 1 for full-semester classes. BYU's Registrar lists April 1 as the full withdrawal deadline too, the last day to leave every class for the semester.

Block classes run on their own clock. First-term classes end February 24, and their withdraw deadline is February 10. Second-term classes start February 25, with add/drop through March 4 and withdraw through April 1.

No spring break, and one odd Tuesday

BYU's winter semester has no spring break week. The 2027 calendar shows one day without classes, Friday, March 19, plus Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day. On Tuesday, February 16, the day after Presidents Day, BYU holds Monday instruction: your Monday classes meet that Tuesday so they don't lose a day. Provo's public schools and UVU take a full spring break week at different times; our fall break, Thanksgiving and spring break comparison lines them up.

Finals and commencement

The last day of class is Wednesday, April 14. Thursday, April 15 is an exam preparation day, and finals run Friday, April 16 through Wednesday, April 21, a stretch that includes a Saturday. Commencement is the next day, Thursday, April 22, with college convocations April 22 and 23. Families coming in for it can start with our graduation weekend guide, and our finals week survival guide covers the week before.
