Think of Utah Valley's career schools as a ladder rather than a list. The bottom rungs are short, cheap and close to home. Each rung up costs more and takes longer, and the useful question is not which school is best but which rung you need, and whether the credit you earn there carries you to the next one.
This page lays out the ladder from the bottom: a free start in high school, a certificate at MTECH, a bootcamp or an apprenticeship, an associate degree at UVU built partly from MTECH hours, and a bachelor's at UVU or a private school like Neumont. Nursing has its own ladder, covered near the end. Nursing programs are compared in nursing in Utah Valley.
Rung one: start while tuition is free
Mountainland Technical College (MTECH) is Utah County's public technical college, part of the Utah System of Higher Education. Its tuition page says plainly: "Tuition is waived for all high school students, although high school students will be responsible for fees." When the student's class graduates, regular tuition applies to whatever hours remain.
That makes the senior year of high school the cheapest moment in a person's life to begin a trade or a technical certificate. A student who starts welding, medical assisting or web development at 17 can arrive at graduation with much of a program paid for by the waiver. Ask the high school counselor; MTECH's presentation to the Board of Higher Education this year said it serves 27 high schools and 31 charter schools across its three-county region.
Rung two: an MTECH certificate
Where: MTECH lists campuses in Lehi (2301 West Ashton Blvd, the main campus), Orem (1410 West 1250 South), downtown Provo (125 North 100 West), Spanish Fork (693 West 1210 South) and Payson (993 South 1950 West). A Heber Valley campus at 977 West Riverhawk Road is listed as opening in fall 2026.
What: MTECH organizes its programs in five schools:
- Apprenticeships: electrical, HVACR, plumbing.
- Trades: automotive, CDL, construction, diesel, fabrication, machining, manufacturing, welding.
- Healthcare: dental, EMT, medical assisting, nursing, phlebotomy, pharmacy, radiography, surgical.
- Services: barber, baking, cosmetology, culinary, hair design, nails.
- Technology: data technology, digital marketing, medical coding and billing, iOS development, software QA, web development.
Cost: The tuition page lists $125 per credit hour for credit programs and $2.10 per course hour for non-credit courses, plus per-course fees, as read in October 2026. Each program page lists its full cost. Federal financial aid is available for eligible programs. For 2026-27, the Board of Higher Education approved MTECH's plan to eliminate its $40 registration fee and fold the money into tuition, a net $5 change for a full-time student. MTECH says the average total cost of a full program is often less than a year of tuition at a Utah four-year university.
Results, as MTECH reports them: In its March 27, 2026 presentation to the Board of Higher Education, MTECH reported 6,735 students, 39 programs, an 82% completion rate, 89% placement, 100% licensure, and record graduating classes that are 99.7% free of educational debt. The same presentation listed 1,493 people on its waitlist, which is the catch: popular programs fill. Apply early and ask each program about its start dates.
Rung three, in two versions: a bootcamp or an apprenticeship
At this point the ladder splits, depending on the work you want.
For software, the bootcamp. Provo was home to Devmountain, one of the early coding bootcamps, and short, intensive programs still compete with MTECH's technology certificates and with college. They are not colleges, their credit almost never transfers, and Utah's registration of private schools is not an endorsement. Our coding bootcamps guide explains the regulatory boxes a school can be in and the questions to ask before paying. For the local job market a bootcamp graduate walks into, see tech jobs in Utah Valley.
For the licensed trades, the apprenticeship. Electricians, plumbers and HVAC technicians in Utah generally train on the job, under an employer, with related classroom hours on the side. MTECH runs apprenticeship classes in all three. The order matters: in most cases the job comes first and the school follows. Our trades and apprenticeships guide walks through that sequence, the hours, and how journeyman and master licenses work.
Rung four: turn the certificate into a UVU associate degree
This is the rung most people do not know exists. Utah Valley University has agreements that convert MTECH hours into UVU credit:
- AAS in Technology. UVU's Technology Management department lets MTECH graduates apply up to 30 UVU credits toward a two-year Associate of Applied Science in Technology. Its page lists MTECH programs including Electrical Apprenticeship (720 hours), IT Support Technicians (690 hours), Digital Marketing and Analytics (600 hours) and Custom Design and Fabrication (630 hours) at 12 credits each. Students meet with a UVU advisor, sign an advising sheet that becomes the articulation contract, and must start the AAS within five years of the MTECH certificate.
- Health science electives. A newer UVU agreement lets MTECH healthcare program hours count, on a one-to-one basis, as health science elective credit toward select degrees in UVU's College of Health and Public Service.
UVU is open-admission, so the barrier at this rung is planning, not getting in. An AAS graduate can continue to UVU's bachelor's in Technology Management. For the realities of going back to school as a working adult, see UVU for students 25 and older.
Rung five: a bachelor's degree, public or private
At UVU, the climb continues inside a public university with 2026-27 resident tuition and fees of $6,873 for a full year, according to the request UVU filed with the Board of Higher Education.
At Neumont College of Computer Science, a private college at 143 South Main Street in Salt Lake City, the pitch is speed. Neumont advertises a bachelor's "in just 3 years" through year-round quarters, in computer science, software engineering, software and game development, information systems and cybersecurity, and several AI programs, with an online master's option in a fourth year. It is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which granted candidacy in 2021 and accreditation in 2022.
The price is a private-college price. Neumont's tuition page lists full-time tuition of $8,670 a quarter and 2025-26 tuition and fees of $28,095 for the year, plus a one-time $3,100 technology package. Its estimated 2025-26 cost of attendance was $52,339 living on campus, $47,668 off campus and $42,421 living with family. Three years at Neumont costs far more than four at UVU before aid; what a student buys is a compressed schedule and a narrow focus. Compare the aid offer, not the sticker.
The nursing ladder
Nursing is the clearest example of the whole ladder working, because each rung is a license.
- MTECH practical nursing. MTECH's healthcare school includes nursing, and its practical nursing program leads toward the LPN license.
- LPN to RN at UVU. In April 2023, UVU announced that MTECH LPN graduates in good standing could transfer into its Associate of Science in Nursing with 22 credits for their MTECH coursework, adding 24 seats for MTECH transfers and bringing the ASN to 104 seats. Transfers must pass the NCLEX-PN by the end of their first UVU semester. Confirm the current terms with UVU nursing before planning around them.
- RN to BSN. UVU's ASN graduates can continue to its BSN completion program.
Nightingale College is a different model: an online BSN with in-person supervised field experiences at partner sites. Its Utah BSN page lists Provo among the field-experience areas, along with Logan, Salt Lake City-Ogden and St. George, but does not guarantee a specific site. The BSN is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the college by NWCCU. The program runs as few as 32 months over eight semesters.
Nightingale's prices need a careful read. A December 2025 sponsored segment on ABC4 described a 31% reduction for Utah residents starting in Summer 2026, from $645 to $440 per credit hour, for residents of at least 12 months who enroll by Summer 2026 and stay continuously enrolled. Nightingale's own Utah BSN page lists $670 per credit elsewhere on the same page and "$655 to $440" in its Utah section. Get the per-credit figure that applies to you in writing from admissions before enrolling.

How to pick your rung
- If you are in high school: start at MTECH while tuition is waived, even if you plan on college. The hours may count later.
- If you need a paycheck within a year: an MTECH certificate, or an apprenticeship if you want a licensed trade.
- If you want software work fast and already code a little: a bootcamp may fit, after checking it with the questions in our bootcamp guide.
- If you want a degree but cannot stop working: MTECH first, then UVU's AAS and bachelor's, one rung at a time.
- If you want a computer science bachelor's in three years and can finance it: Neumont, compared against UVU's price.
- If you want to be a nurse: decide between the MTECH-to-UVU license ladder and an online BSN like Nightingale's, based on cost per credit and how far you can travel for clinical work.
If you are still choosing among Utah's colleges more broadly, our guide to Utah's other colleges compares the 2026-27 costs and distances of the state's other public schools and Westminster.
