Woodworking and Furniture-Building Classes Near Provo: Provo's Woodturning School, the Salt Lake Shared Shops, and What Utah County Is Missing

Where to learn woodworking near Provo: multi-day woodturning classes in Provo, beginner shop classes in Salt Lake County, wood burning in Orem, and supplies.

Utah County has a full-time woodturning school in Provo that runs multi-day classes most of the year, and almost nowhere for a beginner to learn to run a table saw. That is the shape of woodworking education near Provo in 2026. If you want to turn bowls and pens on a lathe, you are in the right valley. If you want to build a bookcase or a dining table, the classes and shared shops are mostly in Salt Lake County, and this page says so up front.

Prices and schedules below are as each business posted them in October 2026.

Start with what you want to make

Craft Supplies USA: the Dale L. Nish School of Woodturning, Provo

1287 East 1120 South, Provo. Craft Supplies USA is a woodturning supplier that sells through its Woodturners Catalog, and it says it has been running hands-on workshops since 1983. The school is named for Dale L. Nish, who the company says designed its workshop facility. The company describes individual workstations equipped with lathes, tools and chucks, high-intensity lighting, compressed air and dust extraction at every station, and a furnished break room. Students do not need to bring anything; supplies and materials are included, though you may bring your own tools, smock and face shield.

Woodturning 201 with Stan Record February 8 to 12, 2027 5 days $845
Woodturning 101 with Jay Brown February 24 to 26, 2027 3 days $600
Woodturning 101 with Stan Record March 22 to 26, 2027 5 days $845
Woodturning 201 with Scott Cherry April 14 to 16, 2027 3 days $600
Woodturning 101 with Stan Record April 26 to 30, 2027 5 days $845
Woodturning 101 with Tina Chou May 5 to 7, 2027 3 days $600
Woodturning 101 with Jay Brown June 16 to 18, 2027 3 days $600

Signature classes listed for the same period ran $1,195 to $1,495, and several of them, along with the November 2026 Woodturning 201, were already marked sold out months in advance. For a specific week, book early.

For a Provo resident, the point is this: you can take a five-day class here and still sleep at home. A three-day 101 at $600 is a direct route in the valley from "never touched a lathe" to turning a bowl.

The store itself is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed weekends, according to Google, and sells lathes, turning tools, sharpening jigs, finishes and turning blanks.

Beginner shop classes in Salt Lake County

For flat woodworking (milling boards, cutting joinery, building a box or a table), the public classes we could verify are north of the county line.

Community Woodshop SLC, 585 West 3900 South, Salt Lake City. A membership woodshop that also teaches. Its site says the shop holds more than $150,000 of equipment and that anyone can take a class without being a member. Classes are open to ages 12 and up (minors with an adult), memberships to adults 18 and over, and its monthly "sawdust sessions" to all ages. Members get at least 20 percent off classes, free skills-building classes, and the chance to sell work at the farmers markets where the shop has a booth. Its class list in October 2026 included a bowl-turning series, an intro-to-turning series and a five-week series in which each student builds an electric guitar, along with youth classes. Google reviewers describe one-session project classes such as a cutting board, an end-grain butcher block and a floating shelf, taught with close attention to safety on the power tools.

University of Utah Lifelong Learning. The university's continuing education program lists a Beginning Woodworking class, taught in partnership with Community Woodshop SLC, that starts from zero: hand tools, then power tools including an impact driver, drill press, jointer, router and four kinds of saw, with students leaving with a charcuterie board and a step stool.

The woodworking stores. Rockler's Taylorsville store (5584 South Redwood Road) and Woodcraft's Sandy store (8932 South State Street) both teach. Rockler's Google reviewers describe an intro-to-lathe bowl class for a family, a pen-turning class and an epoxy-and-wood board class; a Woodcraft reviewer mentions the store's classes. Check each store's class calendar for current topics and prices.

A lighter evening in Orem

Scorched Studio, 218 East University Parkway. Not a woodworking class in the shop-tools sense, but an easy first step with wood in Utah County. Reviewers describe it as a paint-your-own-pottery format for wood burning: you pick a piece (coasters, a cutting board, a mug, a journal or a leather bracelet), trace or freehand a design with the studio's stencils, and burn it with tools the studio provides. One reviewer says you can bring your own wood and pay a small equipment fee. Google lists hours of 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. What Utah County does not have yet

We looked for, and did not find, a dedicated furniture-making school, a recurring public furniture or joinery class, or a public woodshop in Utah County. Our makerspaces guide reports the same gap, and notes that small private shops open and close often. Two things are worth watching:
