Wood Signs and the Farmhouse-Decor Economy in Utah Valley: Where the Sign Studios Went, Who Sells Farmhouse Now, and How to Make Your Own

There is no DIY wood-sign studio left in Utah County. Where to make one now, the farmhouse and vintage shops from Lehi to Springville, and selling signs.

The stenciled wood sign has been a boutique staple in Utah Valley long enough that show organizers cap how many sign makers they accept. Around it grew a small economy: DIY sign-making studios, wood-cutting suppliers, paint and transfer shops, and farmhouse-decor stores. Part of that economy has faded. The studios where groups gathered to make signs have closed across the Wasatch Front, and none is left in Utah County. The decor shops and the paint suppliers are still here. This guide sorts out what remains.

The studios are gone from Utah County

The premise many people start with, that there is a sign studio down the road, is no longer true here.

So a group that wants a sign night has three practical choices: drive north, buy kits, or run it themselves. Our guide to starting a craft group covers the last option, and a sign night is one of the easier projects to prep in advance.

Supplies: where to buy the wood, the paint and the stencils

The Wood Connection, Murray. The closest dedicated source of pre-cut wood shapes and sign kits. The family-owned store says it has been around for almost 50 years and that almost everything it sells is hand cut in Murray. Its site sells classes and kits, seasonal shapes and monthly boxes; in October 2026 its Thanksgiving shadow box and mantel box were listed at $33.95 each. The Murray store is at 6680 South 300 West (Cottonwood Street), open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; a second store is in Layton. From Provo, Murray is about 40 minutes by car.

Jami Ray Vintage, 1190 North 500 West, Lehi. For finishes rather than wood. The shop sells DIY Paint and other furniture paints, milk paint, sealers, waxes and patinas, IOD transfers, stamps and molds, stencils and decoupage papers, along with thrifted and vintage finds. Google reviewers mention following the owners' furniture makeover videos on YouTube. Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday until 4. About 23 minutes from downtown Provo.

The big boxes. Hobby Lobby (four Utah County stores) and Michaels (American Fork and Orem) carry blank boards, stencils, stain, craft paint and sawtooth hangers. Our craft stores guide has hours.

A Cricut for stencils. Many sign makers cut their own adhesive stencils from vinyl. Our guide to Cricut, vinyl and heat-press work covers machines, supplies and the rules for selling what you make.

The farmhouse and vintage shops

These are the stores where the look lives now: finished decor, vintage pieces and seasonal displays. Hours are as listed on Google in October 2026.

Shop Town What it sells Hours
The Farmhouse Peddler Orem Multi-vendor decor, vintage, gifts Mon to Sat 11 to 7; Sun noon to 5
Brambles & Blossoms Provo Cottage decor, linens, antiques Mon to Sat 11 to 5
The Market at Walker Farms Lindon Home goods, seasonal decor Tue to Sat noon to 6
Jami Ray Vintage Lehi Paint, transfers, vintage Tue to Sat

The Farmhouse Peddler, 280 South State Street, Orem. A large store that shoppers describe as full of vendor booths: decor, vintage, jewelry, art, clothing and gifts. It is the one shop here with Sunday hours. With many sellers under one roof, expect style and quality to vary from booth to booth.

Brambles & Blossoms, 959 South State Street, Provo. A cottage-style shop of home decor, gifts, linens, kitchen goods and antiques.

The Market at Walker Farms, 484 East Center Street, Lindon. A small home-goods shop with year-round household items and seasonal decor.

Hobble Creek Barn Boutique, 1520 North Main Street, Springville. A boutique venue that runs vendor shows; its Google listing shows Wednesday to Saturday hours, and shoppers describe periodic fall and holiday events. Check its social accounts for show dates.

For older pieces, the valley's antique malls overlap heavily with farmhouse style; see our antique shops guide. Thrift stores are where many sign makers find frames, crates and old boards; see thrift and vintage in Provo and Orem.

Custom and laser work

Hansen Workshop, 1280 West 200 South, Lindon. A small shop that does custom laser-cut and engraved work. Its Google reviews describe engraved ornaments, custom poems on wood and stone coasters. It keeps weekday hours.

Making one yourself: the basic method

A sign night at home needs:

The order that prevents most failures: sand, stain or base-coat, let it dry fully, apply a thin seal coat, lay the stencil, seal the stencil edges with a light coat of the base color, then pounce the lettering color in thin layers and pull the stencil while the last layer is still slightly wet. The seal coats are what keep paint from bleeding under the stencil.

Selling signs

The sign category is crowded. The valley's juried boutiques limit how many vendors sell the same thing; as our guide to the holiday boutique circuit puts it, organizers limit categories so a show does not become forty sign makers. A sign maker who wants a booth needs a look of their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a wood-sign workshop studio in Utah County?
Not that we could find in October 2026. Board & Brush's Draper and West Jordan studio pages both say those studios are no longer open, Hammer & Stain's nearest studio is in Tooele, and AR Workshop's Utah studio is in St. George. For a sign night closer to home, use a kit or host your own.
Where can I buy unfinished wood shapes and sign kits near Provo?
The Wood Connection in Murray, about 40 minutes north of Provo, is a family-owned store that says it has been in business almost 50 years and hand cuts almost everything it sells. It sells kits, monthly boxes and seasonal shapes, and is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hobby Lobby and Michaels carry blank boards and stencils.
Where do I buy chalk paint, milk paint and transfers in Utah County?
Jami Ray Vintage at 1190 North 500 West in Lehi sells DIY Paint, milk paint, IOD transfers, stamps and molds, stencils and decoupage papers, alongside vintage finds. It is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday until 4.
What farmhouse decor stores are in Utah Valley?
The Farmhouse Peddler on State Street in Orem is a large multi-vendor store with decor, vintage and gifts, and the only one here we found open on Sunday (noon to 5). Brambles & Blossoms on South State in Provo sells cottage-style decor, linens and antiques, and The Market at Walker Farms in Lindon sells home goods and seasonal decor.
Can I make a wood sign at home without a studio?
Yes. You need a pre-cut board, sandpaper, stain or paint, a stencil or vinyl mask (a Cricut can cut one), a brush or foam pouncer and a sawtooth hanger. Seal the board before stenciling so paint does not bleed under the edges.
Do Utah boutiques still want wood signs?
Signs still sell, but juried boutiques limit how many vendors sell the same category so a show does not fill with sign makers. Our boutique circuit guide covers jurying and booth fees. Original designs stand out; licensed characters and quotes you do not own are a legal risk.
Is there a public woodshop in Utah Valley?
No. Our makerspaces guide found no library- or city-run woodshop in the valley. For one-off cuts, home-improvement stores will cut boards to size, and Craft Supplies USA in Provo runs woodturning classes in its shop.
Where can I get a custom laser-engraved wood sign?
Hansen Workshop at 1280 West 200 South in Lindon does custom laser-cut and engraved pieces, including ornaments and engraved signs, according to its listing and reviews. Many boutique vendors also take custom orders.
