March 2027 splits cleanly in two. The first two Mondays are still winter evenings, dark by 6:45. Then daylight saving time begins on Sunday, March 14, and on Monday the 15th the sun sets at 7:34 p.m. in Provo, more than an hour later than the week before. The month ends with Holy Week and Easter on March 28. The five Mondays are March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29; here's what fits each, checked October 20, 2026.
| Monday | Sunset (Provo) | Dark |
|---|---|---|
| March 1 | 6:19 p.m. | 6:45 p.m. |
| March 8 | 6:27 p.m. | 6:53 p.m. |
| March 15 | 7:34 p.m. | 8:00 p.m. |
| March 22 | 7:42 p.m. | 8:08 p.m. |
| March 29 | 7:49 p.m. | 8:15 p.m. |

Before the clocks change: March 1 and 8
RootsTech week. FamilySearch's RootsTech FAQ puts the conference at the Salt Palace on March 4 to 6, 2027, and says the online event "will be free in 2027." Family Discovery Day, which FamilySearch describes as designed for Latter-day Saint families but open to anyone, is Saturday, March 6, and needs no pre-registration. The Church News 2027 calendar puts the Worldwide Relief Society Devotional on the same Saturday.
That gives the first two Mondays a natural order:
- March 1, before: each family member picks one ancestor to learn about by Saturday. Young children can pick a grandparent and ask one question on the phone.
- March 8, after: each person reports what they found. Parents share one thing from the Relief Society devotional or Family Discovery Day.
Our RootsTech guide covers going in person from Utah County, and our February FHE guide has the BYU Family History Library's Monday hours.
Still dark early. On these two Mondays the sky is dark before 7, which is still planetarium weather; the BYU planetarium's Monday shows are in our January guide.
After the clocks change: March 15
Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 14. On Monday the 15th, the first light evening of the year, sunset is 7:34 p.m., compared with 6:27 p.m. a week earlier.
Take the first outdoor home evening of the year. Start with a park rather than a trail, unless you've checked conditions on the trail first. Rock Canyon Park at 2620 N. 1200 E. in Provo was listed on Google with hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily when we checked, and it sits at the foot of Rock Canyon on Provo's east bench. Bring a ball, walk the loop path, and hold the lesson on a blanket while the light lasts. The scripture is easy: Ecclesiastes 3:1, "To every thing there is a season."
Or watch the lake. Utah Lake State Park, at 4398 W. Center St., keeps its winter schedule through March 31, open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a day-use fee of $10 per vehicle in the winter months (it rises to $20 in April). On March 15 that gives you a sunset over the water at 7:34 p.m. with half an hour to spare before the gates close.
For families who'd rather start the trail season right away, our FHE hikes guide lists the short, low trails that dry out first.
The spring equinox follows on Saturday, March 20, at 1:25 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (2:25 p.m. daylight time) according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. Provo City School District's calendar gives students Friday, March 19 off for a professional development day, so it's a three-day weekend.
Holy Week: Monday, March 22
The Church News 2027 calendar lists Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter Sunday from March 21 to 28. The Monday of Holy Week is the best home evening of the year to plan a whole week at once.
A Holy Week reading chart. Make a seven-row chart on Monday night and put it on the fridge: one short reading for each day from Monday to Sunday, following the last week of the Savior's life in one Gospel. Let a different child mark each day off. Matthew 21 to 28 divides into a week with almost no adjustment.
Good Friday is now a state holiday. Under Utah Code 63G-1-301, as amended in 2026, the Friday before Easter is a Utah legal holiday, and state employees who receive paid holidays get four hours off rather than eight. In 2027 that's March 26. Check whether your employer or your children's schools observe it before you plan around it; Provo's district calendar doesn't list it as a day off.
A ticketed concert that week. BYU's calendar lists a new Celebration of Easter on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m., performed by the combined choirs and Philharmonic in the Music Building's concert hall, with tickets at $21 to $34, on sale from October 14, 2026, per the BYU calendar. It's not a Monday, but if the family is going, Monday is the night to prepare: listen to one of the pieces at home first.
Our Easter weekend guide covers the egg hunts, the Sunday services and what is open that weekend.
The Monday after Easter: March 29
Easter Sunday is a hard act to follow, so let the children run this one. Ask each child to retell one part of the Easter story from Sunday in their own words, or act it out with whatever is in the toy box. Then spend the rest of the evening outdoors: sunset is 7:49 p.m.
Spring break is still a week away for Provo schools. The district's calendar puts it on April 5 to 9, the week after general conference, which our April FHE guide covers. Our spring in Provo guide lists what opens as the weather turns.
March weather: still a coat month
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station give March an average high of 58.4 degrees, an average low of 34.6, and 4 inches of snow. Plan the outdoor Mondays after the 15th, keep coats in the car, and keep an indoor backup for the night a storm comes through.
We found fewer March-specific events in Utah Valley than for most months, so this guide is shorter than some. What March has is the change in light, and that is enough to build on.
