February Family Home Evening Ideas in Utah Valley (2027): Family History Before RootsTech, Eagles and a Holiday Monday

February 2027 FHE ideas for Utah Valley: family history at BYU before RootsTech, bald eagles at Utah Lake, Valentine's on a Sunday, and Presidents' Day.

February has four Mondays in 2027, February 1, 8, 15 and 22, and each one has a reason to be different: a run-up to the Church's biggest family history event, a Valentine's Day that lands on a Sunday, a state holiday, and a free jazz concert on BYU's campus. Here they are as questions, because that's how February plans usually start. Everything was checked October 20, 2026.

Where can we do family history on a Monday night?

RootsTech, FamilySearch's family history conference, is March 4 to 6, 2027 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, and FamilySearch's RootsTech FAQ says the online event "will be free in 2027." Family Discovery Day, the session designed for Latter-day Saint families but open to anyone, is Saturday, March 6, with no pre-registration. February's Mondays are the lead-up. Our RootsTech guide covers going in person.

The BYU Family History Library. It's inside the Harold B. Lee Library on BYU's campus, and its Google listing showed Monday hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. when we checked. Reviewers on that listing describe volunteers who help visitors search and scanning stations for photos and documents. Bring one thing: a grandparent's name and birthplace, or a shoebox of photographs. Call 801-422-6200 if you want to confirm the evening hours before driving.

Or do it at the kitchen table. For young children, a family history home evening is often better as a story than as a search. Pick one ancestor, print one photo, and tell the children three facts about that person's life.

Neighborhood FamilySearch centers mostly don't fit a Monday. Google's listings for two in Orem showed one closed Mondays with Tuesday through Thursday evening hours, and another open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday with evening hours Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. If your family can move home evening to Tuesday, those work.

Is Valentine's home evening on the 8th or the 15th?

Valentine's Day is Sunday, February 14, 2027. The Monday before (February 8) is the cleaner choice, because the Monday after is Presidents' Day and a school holiday. A Valentine's home evening that works at every age: each person secretly draws another family member's name on Monday and has until Sunday to leave three anonymous notes about what they admire in that person. Reveal it at Sunday dinner. Our Valentine's Day guide covers the dinners and dates for parents.

The Church's Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults is Sunday, February 7, at 6 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, according to the Church News 2027 calendar, which makes February 8 a ready-made topic for YSA home evening groups. See our YSA and roommate FHE guide.

Where are the bald eagles?

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources' Bald Eagle Month flyer says February is "the best time of the year" to see bald eagles in Utah, after hundreds have migrated into the state, and lists Utah Lake State Park as one of the popular viewing spots for Utah and Sanpete counties. (The 2027 flyer wasn't out when we checked; this is the 2026 edition.)

Utah Lake State Park is at 4398 W. Center St., at the west end of Provo's Center Street. Utah State Parks lists winter hours of 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from November through March and a winter day-use fee of $10 per vehicle. Sunset on Monday, February 8 is 5:55 p.m., per Sunrise-Sunset.org, so arrive around 5 with binoculars and you have most of an hour of usable light.

The flyer's own eagle facts make the lesson: a bald eagle's eyesight is at least four to six times sharper than a person's, and the species was removed from the Endangered Species List in 2007 after coming close to extinction in the 1960s. Read Isaiah 40:31 in the car on the way home. The flyer also asks drivers not to stop in the road to look at an eagle; pull completely off first.

What's open on Presidents' Day?

Presidents' Day is the third Monday of February under Utah Code 63G-1-301, February 15 in 2027. Provo City School District's 2026-27 calendar shows no school, and BYU's academic calendar marks the day as a holiday.

A day trip to the Utah State Capitol. The Capitol's visitor page lists hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Its tours page says guided tours run hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays "with the exception of state holidays," so on Presidents' Day you walk it yourself. The timing is the point: the Legislature's 2027 general session runs January 19 to March 5, so the House and Senate chambers your children walk past are the ones in use that week. A lesson pairs with it naturally: Doctrine and Covenants 134, on government and law. For more holiday-Monday trips with the lesson built in, see our FHE day trips guide.

What's on the last Monday?

A free jazz concert at 5:30. BYU's event calendar lists the Noah Preminger Quartet on Monday, February 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Music Building, and the listing says "Free." An early concert leaves time for dinner and a lesson afterward.

The splurge: BYU against Arizona. The same night, BYU's men's basketball team hosts Arizona at the Marriott Center at 7 p.m., the only Monday home game on BYU's schedule for January through March. It's a ticketed Big 12 game. If your family is going to one game this season and Monday is the night you have, this is the one.

Still winter after dark

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station give February an average high of 47.6 degrees and an average low of 27.5, with 8.7 inches of snow. It's still winter after dark, but the evenings are lengthening: sunset moves from 5:46 p.m. on February 1 to 6:11 p.m. on February 22.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Monday dates in February 2027?
February 2027 has four Mondays: February 1, 8, 15 and 22. February 15 is Presidents' Day, a Utah legal holiday, and Valentine's Day falls on Sunday, February 14.
Should Valentine's family home evening be on February 8 or February 15?
Either works, but February 8 keeps it separate from the holiday weekend. Valentine's Day is a Sunday in 2027, and Monday the 15th is Presidents' Day, when Provo schools are closed and many families travel or plan a daytime outing.
Where can we do family history on a Monday night in Provo?
The BYU Family History Library in the Harold B. Lee Library was listed on Google as open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays when we checked in October 2026, with volunteers who help visitors find records and scan photos. Many neighborhood FamilySearch centers keep daytime or other-evening hours instead.
Is RootsTech free in 2027?
The online event is. FamilySearch's RootsTech FAQ says RootsTech online will be free in 2027, with the in-person conference at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City on March 4 to 6. Family Discovery Day, on Saturday, March 6, needs no pre-registration.
Where can we see bald eagles in Utah County in February?
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources calls February the best month to see bald eagles in Utah and names Utah Lake State Park as a popular viewing spot. The park's winter day-use fee is $10 per vehicle from November through March, and its winter hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Is the Utah State Capitol open on Presidents' Day?
The building is. The Capitol's visitor page lists holiday hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., but its tours page says guided tours run Monday through Friday except on state holidays, so a Presidents' Day visit is self-guided.
Is there a free concert at BYU on a Monday in February 2027?
Yes. BYU's calendar lists the Noah Preminger Quartet at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2027, in the Recital Hall of the Music Building, free.
How much daylight is there on February Monday evenings?
Sunrise-Sunset.org's Provo data puts sunset at 5:46 p.m. on February 1 and 6:11 p.m. on February 22, so the month gains about 25 minutes of evening light across its four Mondays.
