Temple Work as a Weekly Habit in Utah Valley: Six Open Temples, How Scheduling Works, the Youth Baptistry and the Closure Weeks to Plan Around

Building a weekly temple habit in Utah Valley: the six open temples, online scheduling, youth baptistry basics, and the closure weeks in late 2026 and 2027.

A weekly temple habit in Utah Valley comes down to three choices: which temple fits your week, how you book a time, and which weeks that temple is closed. Six temples are open in Utah County right now, all within a short drive of most of the valley, and every one of them takes online reservations and walk-ins. The part people miss is the closure calendar. Each temple shuts for maintenance for one or two weeks at a time, several of them in the next two months, and a habit built around one building breaks the first time you drive up to a locked gate.

This page is written for Latter-day Saints building that rhythm, and for parents of youth starting at the baptistry. If you are visiting the grounds, are not a member, or want the history and architecture, our guide to visiting Utah Valley's temples and our guide to Provo's temples are the better start.

The six temples open now

The Church's temple pages list these addresses and phone numbers. Every one says "Reservations available, walk-ins welcome," offers free baptistry clothing, and has temple clothing to rent while encouraging members to bring their own.

Temple Address Phone
Provo City Center 50 S. University Ave., Provo 801-343-2700
Orem Utah 1451 S. 1100 W., Orem 801-762-6720
Mount Timpanogos Utah 742 N. 900 E., American Fork 801-763-4540
Payson Utah 1494 S. 930 W., Payson 801-754-4949
Saratoga Springs Utah 987 S. Ensign Dr., Saratoga Springs 801-341-1860
Lindon Utah 850 E. Center St., Lindon 801-701-3680

Lindon is the newest. President Henry B. Eyring dedicated it on Sunday, May 3, 2026, after a public open house that ended April 11. The Church described it as a three-story building of about 81,000 square feet.

Not on the list: the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple. The Church closed the original Provo temple on February 24, 2024 for reconstruction and gave it its new name at the same time. Its newsroom release encouraged members of that temple district to attend other temples as their circumstances allow, and told members who want to receive their own ordinances to contact a nearby temple to arrange them. No reopening date has been announced. Our Rock Canyon rebuild explainer follows the construction.

Coming, eventually: the Church lists temples announced for Lehi and Spanish Fork. Announced is not scheduled; our open houses and dedications guide tracks where each stands.

How scheduling works

The Church's help page for scheduling a temple appointment describes two ways in:

  1. On the website, through the Temple Appointment Scheduling page ("Make a Reservation").
  2. In the Church's member app, under More, then Temples. (The help page still calls the app by its older name, LDS Tools.)

Then:

Two rules from that page matter for planning:

The temple pages add the walk-in rule: without a reservation you are welcome, but "may be asked to wait or participate in another ordinance." For a habit, book.

Family names. In the app, "Ordinance Ready" shows family names you can take to the temple. The Church's baptism planning page also points to the FamilySearch Ordinances Ready app and to your ward's temple and family history consultant. If you have no names of your own, you can still serve with names other members have submitted.

Choosing your temple for a weekly slot

The best temple for a habit is usually the one on the way to something you already do. A few local considerations:

Pick a second temple too. Closures are staggered, and having a backup keeps the rhythm going.

The closure calendar

Every Utah Valley temple publishes its closure dates on its Church page. Here are the ones between now and the end of 2026, as listed on October 19, 2026:

Temple Maintenance closure Holiday closures
Lindon Oct. 19 to Nov. 2 (closed now) Nov. 7 and Nov. 25 limited; Nov. 26, Dec. 24 to 25, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1
Mount Timpanogos Nov. 9 to 24 Nov. 25 to 26, Dec. 24 to 25, Dec. 31, Jan. 1
Provo City Center Nov. 30 to Dec. 14 Oct. 31 limited; Nov. 25 to 26, Dec. 24 to 25, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1
Saratoga Springs Nov. 30 to Dec. 14 Nov. 25 to 26, Dec. 24 to 25, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1
Orem none listed Nov. 25 to 26, Dec. 24 to 25, Dec. 31, Jan. 1
Payson none listed Nov. 25 limited, Nov. 26, Dec. 24 to 25, Dec. 31 to Jan. 1

Two things stand out. Lindon is closed this week and next. And from November 30 to December 14, Provo City Center and Saratoga Springs are closed at the same time, which leaves Orem, Lindon, Mount Timpanogos and Payson to absorb those districts during the first two weeks of December. Book ahead for those weeks.

2027 maintenance closures

Temple 2027 maintenance closures
Orem Feb. 22 to Mar. 8; Aug. 23 to Sept. 6
Lindon Feb. 1 to 15; Aug. 2 to 16
Payson Mar. 22 to Apr. 5; Sept. 13 to 27
Mount Timpanogos May 17 to 31; Nov. 8 to 22
Provo City Center May 31 to July 5; Nov. 29 to Dec. 13
Saratoga Springs June 7 to 21; Nov. 29 to Dec. 13

Note the long one: Provo City Center closes for five weeks, May 31 to July 5, 2027.

Holidays and conference. The 2027 lists also show the pattern for single-day closures: Christmas Eve and Day, New Year's Eve and Day, the Wednesday and Thursday of Thanksgiving, July 3 and July 24 (Pioneer Day), and the Saturdays of general conference. Orem, Mount Timpanogos and Lindon list April 3 and October 2, 2027 as closed, and Payson and Saratoga Springs list October 2. The Church has published April 3 to 4 and October 2 to 3 as the 2027 conference weekends.

The youth baptistry

For a family with a 12-year-old, the baptistry is where a weekly or monthly habit usually starts. The Church's page on planning for temple baptisms covers the essentials:

The recommend. Members can get a temple recommend beginning in January of the year they turn 12, through an interview with the bishop or branch president. A recommend for baptisms and confirmations lasts one year.

What to bring. The recommend, family name cards to hand to a temple worker at the font, and a comb or hairbrush for afterward.

What the temple provides. A white jumpsuit, underclothing and a towel, at every temple. Bras are available for young women who want them, and elastic hair ties for long hair. The Church says to arrive wearing roughly what you would wear to Sunday services, and that women may participate while menstruating if they are comfortable.

Names. Youth can be baptized and confirmed for deceased relatives, from parents and grandparents to cousins; young women act for female ancestors and young men for male ancestors. Without family names, they can serve with names submitted by other members.

Timing. Arrive about 30 minutes before the appointment. A busy baptistry may mean a wait in a sitting area. Call the temple ahead of time to request accommodations for mobility, hearing or language needs.

Groups. The Church notes that wards often schedule group appointments, and the General Handbook says organized ward or stake temple visits are planned within the assigned temple district, with visits elsewhere requiring stake presidency approval. If your youth group is planning a baptistry trip, the bishopric will know which temple is yours and whether the trip falls in a closure week.

Baptistry hours. The Church's temple pages do not list baptistry hours in a form we could read; the scheduling tool shows the open times for each day. That is also the most reliable place to check, since hours shift with staffing and season.

Making the habit stick

Frequently Asked Questions

How many temples are open in Utah Valley right now?
Six of the seven dedicated temples in Utah County are operating: Provo City Center, Orem, Mount Timpanogos in American Fork, Payson, Saratoga Springs and Lindon. The seventh, the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, closed on February 24, 2024 for reconstruction, and the Church has not announced a reopening date.
How do I schedule a temple appointment?
Through the Church's Temple Appointment Scheduling page on its website, or in the Church's member app under More, then Temples. Pick a temple (your home district's temple is the default), the ordinance and a time. Proxy baptisms, initiatory, endowment and sealing can be booked online. Appointments for your own living ordinances are made by calling the temple.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
The Church's pages for all six operating Utah Valley temples say 'Reservations available, walk-ins welcome.' Patrons without a reservation may be asked to wait or to take part in another ordinance, so an appointment is the safer choice for a fixed weekly time.
At what age can youth do temple baptisms?
Members may get a temple recommend beginning in January of the year they turn 12, after an interview with their bishop or branch president. A recommend for baptisms and confirmations lasts one year, according to the Church's planning page for temple baptisms.
What do youth need to bring to the baptistry?
Their temple recommend and any family name cards, which they hand to a temple worker at the font. The Church says every temple provides a white jumpsuit, underclothing and a towel, and the Utah Valley temples list baptistry clothing as free. A comb or hairbrush is a good idea, and the Church suggests arriving about 30 minutes early.
Which Utah Valley temples are closed in November and December 2026?
Per each temple's Church page: Lindon is closed October 19 to November 2; Mount Timpanogos November 9 to 24; Provo City Center and Saratoga Springs November 30 to December 14. All six close or limit operations around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Check each temple's page before you go.
Are temples open on general conference weekend?
Many Utah Valley temples close on conference Saturday. For 2027, the Church's temple pages list Orem, Mount Timpanogos and Lindon as closed on April 3 and October 2, and Payson and Saratoga Springs as closed on October 2. April 3 and October 2, 2027 are the Saturdays of general conference.
When will the Provo Rock Canyon Temple reopen?
No date has been announced. The Church News temple almanac records the closure on February 24, 2024 and the reconstruction, but lists no completion, open house or rededication date. When the rebuilt temple is finished, a public open house normally comes before rededication.
