What happened

Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Ray Ormond said the slide covered part of the trail and the park area near the falls, KSL reported. Rocks were still falling about an hour later. Two people driving through the canyon, Emerson and Bailee Hamilton, filmed the slide and the large rocks landing on the trail and shared the video with KSL.

The Sheriff's Office posted at 3:53 p.m. that "the trail and park near the falls are closed," from the parking lot east along the trail for about a quarter mile toward the falls, Gephardt Daily reported. A 5:30 p.m. update said no one was hurt and the area had been inspected. Deputies and volunteers were posted at the closure to keep visitors out, KUTV reported.

Why it came down

Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran's post attributed the slide to heavy rain, the Deseret News reported. According to KSL, some rain gauges in Provo Canyon recorded more than an inch of rain in the 24 hours before the slide, citing National Weather Service data, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought heavy rain to the Wasatch Mountains.

How long it will be closed

Utah County officials said the trail had already been scheduled to close the following week, and the rockslide moved the closure up. The county says the area will remain closed through the winter, with cleanup in the spring. No reopening date has been given. "Crews will work to clear the debris and ensure the trail is safe and passable before reopening," Beltran wrote.

The falls are also in the middle of a two-year, $7 million Utah County reconstruction that began in September 2025, covering parking, trails, recreation areas and repairs to earlier avalanche damage, with construction expected to run through 2027, KUTV reported. Our Bridal Veil Falls guide covers the phases of that project and the area's history of avalanches.
