Slate Canyon Trailhead is southeast Provo's door to the mountain: a trailhead park of nearly 12 acres at the mouth of Slate Canyon, with access to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and the city's mountain bike trails.

Using the park
There are restrooms and a first-come pavilion with power and lights. The canyon itself is covered in our Slate Canyon guide, and the Shoreline Trail runs north from here toward the Y Mountain and Rock Canyon trailheads.
Before you hike
The trailhead sits behind a residential street in the southeast corner of the city, so park only in the marked spaces; the Forest Service asks for it, and overflow on the verge is how trailheads end up with permit systems. Bring water, since there is none at the lot, and don't count on the restroom, which hikers often find locked. If you would rather not drive in, the paved Slate Canyon Connector runs about half a mile from the roundabout at Center Street and Olympic Boulevard to the trailhead and onto the Shoreline Trail.
The canyon trail, Forest Service trail 061, climbs about 3,300 feet in roughly 3.7 miles one way, steadily rather than in bursts, and a connector near the top leads toward the ridge route up Provo Peak, at 11,068 feet.
