A sled costs less than a lift ticket, and Utah Valley is surrounded by places to use one. This guide covers the tubing hills, where the lanes, the lift and the staff are supplied, and the free public hills across the Wasatch Front and the Wasatch Back. For how to choose a safe hill and read its runout, which is where most sledding injuries happen, see Sledding in Utah Valley.
Soldier Hollow: the closest tubing hill
Soldier Hollow, in Wasatch Mountain State Park near Midway, is the tubing hill closest to Utah Valley: about 28 miles and 42 minutes from downtown Provo up Provo Canyon, by OpenStreetMap routing. It was the cross-country skiing and biathlon venue of the 2002 Winter Olympics, and its tubing lanes are 1,200 feet long, which Ski Utah and Visit Utah both describe as the longest in the state. A lift tows riders back up, and sessions run two hours.
Soldier Hollow's winter season has run from mid-December to mid-March, weather permitting, so check its schedule and book a session ahead on weekends and holidays. For the rest of what Soldier Hollow offers the public, see Soldier Hollow.
Woodward Park City
Woodward Park City, on the site of the old Gorgoza Park, has seven tubing lanes, each 1,200 feet long, with two-hour sessions that start on the hour and a cafe on site. It is about 48 miles and an hour and three minutes from Provo. Prices vary by date, so book online.
Cherry Peak
Far to the north near Richmond, Cherry Peak Resort runs a five-lane tubing hill alongside its ski runs and night skiing; it is covered in Northern Utah's Small Ski Hills.
The free hills: Salt Lake County
Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City is the best-known free sledding hill on the Wasatch Front, about 44 miles and 52 minutes from Provo. The 110-acre park has two main hills, one reached from 1300 East and the other from 1700 East, and it is open free from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in winter.
Salt Lake County parks with sledding hills also include:
- Salt Lake City: Liberty Park (600 East 900 South) and Lindsey Gardens (426 M Street).
- Murray: Murray Park (296 East Murray Park Avenue).
- Cottonwood Heights: Mountainview Park (1651 Fort Union Boulevard).
- Sandy: Flat Iron Mesa Park (1765 East 8600 South) and Storm Mountain Park (980 East 11400 South).
- Draper: Draper City Park (12500 South 1300 East).
- Herriman, South Jordan, Taylorsville and West Valley City: Rosecrest and Emmebella parks, Jordan Ridge Park, Bennion Park and Hunter Park.
The free hills: the Wasatch Back and Davis County
- Park City: a free hill at the Overland trailhead behind the Park City outlets, with no lift.
- Parley's Canyon: the Mountain Dell golf course, a free sledding spot on the drive to Park City.
- Bountiful: the hill at Mueller Park Junior High (955 East 1800 South).
Before you go
- Read the runout. The bottom of the hill is where the injuries happen; the Utah Valley guide explains how to judge it.
- Check the snow. The valley-floor parks need a real storm; the mountain venues hold snow longer.
- Book tubing ahead. Weekend and holiday sessions can sell out.
- Bring your own sled for the free hills. There are no rentals or lifts.
