Utah Lake Sunset Cruises and Pontoon Rentals for a Group Night: What Exists, What It Costs, and the Riverboat Next Door

Utah Lake has no scheduled sunset cruise boat. What a group can book: a two-couple sunset sail, captained charters, 35-seat river cruises and a pavilion.

There is no scheduled sunset cruise boat on Utah Lake. We looked in October 2026 for the kind of thing people picture, a tour boat that leaves the dock at golden hour with tickets for anyone, and did not find one operating. What does exist, and what a group can book, is a smaller and odder set of options: a two-couple sunset sail, captained charters priced by the day, a 35-seat riverboat that runs holiday cruises on the lower Provo River just upstream of the lake, and a lakeside pavilion for dinner. Here is each one, with prices only where the operator publishes them.

The Utah Lake Authority's own list of lake activities names three businesses under "cruises and boat tours": Bonneville Sailing, Utah Boat Rentals (charter) and CLAS Ropes (events). We checked each.

The options at a glance

Option Group size Price as published Season
Bonneville sunset sail Up to 2 couples $120 per couple; $170 private Sailing season (courses April to October)
Captained charter or party boat 10 to 18 per boat $2,995 to $4,595 per day (1 to 2 days) Summer
CLAS Ropes riverboat cruise About 35 per boat $11 to $13 per person Fall, December, January to February
Pontoon rental Varies Not verified on Utah Lake

The sunset sail: small, quiet and real

Bonneville School of Sailing has operated out of Utah Lake State Park since 2007, according to Utah State Parks, and it is a U.S. Sailing accredited school. Its Sunset Sail is the closest thing on the lake to a sunset cruise:

The school pitches it as a date night, and that is the honest fit: four people, a sailboat and, in its own words, "a pink and gold sunset behind Lake Mountain." Bonneville also runs two-hour social sails and team-building outings; for a group larger than four, call and ask what it can arrange with more than one boat. Our sailing on Utah Lake guide explains the school, the clubs and why the afternoon wind matters.

Captained charters and party boats: big boats, big prices

Utah Boat Rental is a statewide rental company whose Google listings put it at 1112 S. 1680 W. in Orem and 20 W. Center St. in Provo (801-413-9602). It has a Utah Lake page and advertises "boat tours and charters at any lake in Utah," including party boats seating 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18, with a captain or guide available.

Its published prices, for "Northern Utah Lakes," are day rates, not hourly:

Boat (passengers) 1 to 2 days, per day
MasterCraft XT20 (12) $2,995
MasterCraft NXT22 (14) $3,295
MasterCraft X22 (16) $4,195
MasterCraft X24 (18) $4,595

The company says peak season, weekend and holiday pricing applies and that pricing varies by location. Its FAQ adds the fine print a group needs before it books:

One more thing, in the company's own words: its party boats are wakeboard boats it describes as "much more comfortable" than "your regular party pontoon boat rentals." It does not list pontoons.

The riverboat next door: CLAS Ropes cruises

For a true group night, 20 or 30 people on one boat, the verified option is not on the lake at all. CLAS Ropes Course, at 3606 W. Center St., Provo, on the road to Utah Lake State Park, runs riverboat cruises on the lower Provo River in boats that seat about 35. Its seasonal schedule, as listed on its site:

Halloween Cruise, September 25 to October 31, 2026 (Monday to Saturday)

Christmas Cruise, December 1 to 23 and 26 to 31

Winter Lights Cruise, Friday and Saturday nights in January and February. CLAS lists $1 for children 2 and under; check its page for adult prices.

For a group: CLAS advertises 30 percent off for booking a full boat of 35 seats, which is the cleanest way to put a ward party, team or reunion on one boat. Wheelchair-accessible boats leave on the hour and half hour. Strollers and pets are not allowed on the boats. Park on the side of the road and walk in through the gates.

CLAS also rents canoes year-round for the lower Provo River, two people per canoe, with life jackets included, and its own rule is plain: "Don't canoe out onto Utah Lake."

Pontoons: what we could and could not confirm

A pontoon is the classic group boat, but we could not confirm a pontoon rental operating on Utah Lake itself in October 2026:

Where pontoons are verified: Deer Creek Island Resort at Deer Creek Reservoir and Jordanelle Rentals and Marina, both up Provo Canyon and both covered in the rentals guide. Several Utah County companies also deliver boats to a ramp; ask specifically whether they rent pontoons and whether they will deliver to a Utah Lake ramp.

If you bring your own boat or rent one elsewhere, our Utah Lake marinas guide shows which ramps work and which get shallow in a low-water fall.

Planning the night

Timing the sunset. By our calculation for Provo (Mountain Daylight Time):

Date Approximate sunset
June 1 8:49 p.m.
June 21 8:59 p.m.
July 15 8:56 p.m.
August 1 8:42 p.m.
August 15 8:26 p.m.
September 1 8:00 p.m.

These are calculated with the standard solar-position formula and can be off by a minute or two; check a sunset table for your date.

The wind. Utah Lake is shallow, and the afternoon wind is the reason sailors love it and other boaters plan around it. Our sailing guide has the measurements.

The algae. Summer and fall bring harmful algal bloom advisories. On July 30, 2026, the DWR noted a lake-wide warning advisory from the state's Division of Water Quality; by October 20 the state park's page listed algae conditions as clear. Check before you book anything nonrefundable; our algal bloom guide explains how.

Dinner first. Utah Lake State Park rents the Old Ice Rink Day-Use Group Pavilion, with water, two serving tables, two large barbecues and 14 tables, for the day-use fee of $20 per vehicle, according to the park. (The Center Lawn pavilion was closed for construction.) The park is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from April 1 to October 31. Drones are not allowed; the park is a no-fly zone because of the Provo Airport.

A free alternative. For a group that just wants the sunset, the lakeshore parks in Saratoga Springs and Vineyard face west over the water, and our date night guide lists a golden-hour picnic as one of the valley's best free evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a sunset cruise on Utah Lake?
Not a scheduled public cruise boat. The closest thing is Bonneville School of Sailing's two-hour sunset sail from Utah Lake State Park, listed at $120 per couple with a maximum of two couples, or $170 for a private sail. For larger groups, a captained charter or a riverboat cruise on the lower Provo River next to the lake are the options we could verify.
Can I rent a pontoon boat on Utah Lake?
We could not confirm a pontoon rental operating on Utah Lake itself in October 2026. The rental company an earlier guide named at the state park marina now lists only Bear Lake locations on its website, and the state park's rentals page did not list a Utah Lake concession. Pontoon rentals are offered at Deer Creek and Jordanelle reservoirs, up Provo Canyon.
How many people fit on a Bonneville sunset sail?
Bonneville School of Sailing lists its sunset sail as a maximum of two couples at $120 per couple, or $170 private. Reservations are by phone at 801-636-5204. It is a small-group outing, not a party boat.
Can I charter a boat with a captain on Utah Lake?
Utah Boat Rental, a statewide company with Utah County listings in Orem and Provo, advertises boat tours and charters at any Utah lake, including captained party boats seating 10 to 18. Its published day rates for northern Utah lakes run from $2,995 to $4,595 for one to two days, with security deposits of $1,500 to $9,500 and a no-cancellation, no-refund policy.
What is the CLAS Ropes riverboat cruise?
CLAS Ropes Course, at 3606 W. Center St. in Provo near Utah Lake State Park, runs seasonal riverboat cruises on the lower Provo River in boats that seat about 35. Its Halloween Cruise runs September 25 to October 31, 2026, its Christmas Cruise December 1 to 23 and 26 to 31, and a Winter Lights Cruise on Friday and Saturday nights in January and February. Rides last about 20 to 25 minutes.
How much is the CLAS Ropes Christmas Cruise?
CLAS Ropes lists $11 per person Monday through Thursday and $13 Friday and Saturday, with children 2 and under $2 or $3. It is closed Sundays, reservations are required, and it advertises 30 percent off for booking a full boat of 35 seats.
What time is sunset on Utah Lake in summer?
By our calculation for Provo, sunset is around 8:50 p.m. on June 1, about 9 p.m. in late June and early July, about 8:42 p.m. on August 1 and about 8 p.m. on September 1, Mountain Daylight Time. Check a sunset table for your exact date.
Where can a group eat before an evening on Utah Lake?
Utah Lake State Park has a reservable group pavilion, the Old Ice Rink Day-Use Group Pavilion, with water, two serving tables, two large barbecues and 14 tables. The park lists the day-use fee as $20 per vehicle and summer hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from April 1 to October 31.
