Getting Married at the Utah County Clerk's Office in Provo: The $35 Ceremony, the Zoom Option and the Historic Courthouse a Block Away

A Utah County Clerk's Office wedding in Provo: the $35 ceremony at 111 S University Ave, two witnesses, Zoom, and courthouse photos at $100 an hour.

The shortest wedding in Utah County takes place in a county office in downtown Provo: a deputy clerk, a simple script, two witnesses and an optional ring exchange, for $35. Couples searching for a "Provo courthouse wedding" usually mean this office, which sits a block south of the Historic Utah County Courthouse. We read the Utah County Clerk's and Public Works pages on October 20, 2026; everything below comes from them.

For every way to marry outside a temple in Utah Valley, from reception centers to bishops as officiants, read our civil and non-temple weddings guide. This page is about the Clerk's ceremony itself and the building next door.

Where it is

Utah County Clerk, Passport and Marriage License Office 111 South University Avenue, Provo, UT 84601 801-851-8109, marriage@utahcounty.gov

The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It closes every third Thursday of the month from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for training, on Saturdays before a Monday holiday and after a Friday holiday, and on the holidays on its closure list (in late 2026: November 11, November 26 to 28, and December 24 to 26). The same counter handles passports; our Clerk's Office guide covers that side.

The Historic Utah County Courthouse, the Neoclassical building with the columns, is a block north at 51 South University Avenue. Our Center Street walking tour tells its story.

The ceremony, step by step

  1. Get the license. Apply online (each of you signs your own part, verifies ID with a phone, and pays by card) or in person, arriving together with photo IDs. The license is issued immediately after payment and arrives as a digital license. Our marriage license guide walks through the application.
  2. Add the ceremony. The Clerk lists the ceremony as an optional service at $35.
  3. Choose in-office or remote. The Clerk performs ceremonies in its office or by remote appearance over Zoom, by appointment during business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  4. Bring two witnesses. Both must be at least 18, with ID such as a driver's license or passport.
  5. Say the words. A deputy clerk reads a simple script, with an optional ring exchange.
  6. Leave married. For the remote ceremony, the Clerk says the officiant finalizes the license before the call ends, you receive a digital marriage certificate within minutes, and you get access to the video recording. A paper certificate is mailed within a few business days.

There is no waiting period. A Utah County license must be used within 32 days of issue, and the Clerk suggests applying about 10 to 15 days before the wedding.

What it costs

Item Published price
Marriage license, base $50
State Marriage Commission fee (online, unless you qualify for the education discount) $20
Typical total for the license, per the Clerk $71.75
Clerk's Office ceremony $35

The $20 commission fee can be waived with approved premarital counseling or education, which our marriage license guide explains.

The Zoom ceremony, and its warning

The remote ceremony is designed for couples "appearing via video conference with no in-office participation." Witnesses, family and friends can join from anywhere through the link you share. That makes it the cheapest way for a grandparent in another state to watch.

The Clerk also publishes a warning: a Utah marriage performed through online remote appearance may not be recognized in the country where a couple lives. If either of you is not a U.S. resident, or the marriage will need to be recognized abroad, check with that country first. Our marriage license guide has more on this.

If no Clerk's appointment fits, the Clerk points couples to authorized officiants physically in Utah, who set their own schedules and fees. Our civil officiants guide lists who can legally marry you.

Photos and a party at the Historic Courthouse

The building most people picture when they say "Provo courthouse" can be rented from Utah County Public Works, which lists these rates:

Space When Published rate Capacity
Photo session By reservation $100 an hour Groups under 10
Ballroom and/or rotunda, 2nd floor Friday after 5 p.m. and Saturday $2,000 Ballroom 223, rotunda 439 (fewer with chairs and tables)
Ballroom, daytime Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. $100 an hour 223

Every rental takes a refundable deposit ($500 for the courthouse). Reserve at least 30 days ahead by calling Public Works at (801) 851-8600 or emailing publicworks@utahcounty.gov, and note that reserving outside business hours requires an event permit. The Public Works page describes the buildings for community gatherings, public events, dances and photo sessions; it does not mention weddings by name, so describe your event plainly when you call.

That opens a very Provo plan: a $35 ceremony at the Clerk's Office in the morning, portraits in the courthouse for an hour, and lunch on Center Street. Our wedding luncheon venues guide and Provo restaurant guide cover the lunch.
