Wedding Registries and Local Gift Shops in Utah Valley: Registering for a Small First Home and Where Guests Shop

Registering for a Utah Valley wedding: what fits a first apartment, registry terms at Target and Crate & Barrel, and local shops in Provo and Orem for gifts.

The registry question in Utah Valley comes with a local twist. Couples here marry younger than the national average (the Census Bureau's 2024 estimates put Utah's median age at first marriage about three and a half years below the U.S. figure), many start in a small rental, and an open-house reception can bring a long guest list of households rather than a seated dinner of 120. A registry built for a suburban house does not fit that wedding. This guide covers what to register for, what the big registries offer, and the local shops in Provo and Orem where guests can buy something off-list.

Register for the home you will have in a year

For scale: the Census Bureau's 2024 median gross rent was $1,255 a month in Provo and $1,416 in Orem, across all unit sizes. On a student budget that usually means a modest apartment. Register for the place you will live in, not an imagined future house.

Price spread. At an open-house reception, guests come through as households, and a long guest list means a wide range of budgets. Make sure there are plenty of items at the low end of the range, not just a few. Our open-house reception explainer explains who comes and how many to expect.

The registries most Utah Valley guests can reach

You can register anywhere online, but some guests prefer to walk into a store and buy the gift in person. Here is what the major retailers near Provo offer, as listed on their own pages and Google's business listings in October 2026. For cash-fund fees on Zola, The Knot and Honeyfund side by side, see our wedding registries compared guide.

Target

Three stores serve Provo and Orem, according to Google's listings:

Store Address Listed hours
Orem 175 W Center St, Orem 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
Provo (Towne Centre) 1200 Towne Centre Blvd, Provo 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
Provo (North State) 1290 N State St, Provo 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Sunday from 10 a.m.)

Target's wedding registry page advertises a "15% completion bonus" on items still on your registry after the wedding, and says registry items can be returned or exchanged "for up to a year." That long return window matters when you get three toasters.

Crate & Barrel

There is no Crate & Barrel in Utah County. Google lists the nearest store at 6207 South State Street in Murray. Crate & Barrel's registry page advertises a 15% completion discount "good for up to six months after the event," free shipping for guests on eligible purchases of $49 or more, and invitations to in-store registry events. Guests who prefer to shop in person will need to drive north; everyone else can order online.

Department stores and online registries

Dillard's has a store at University Place (543 East University Parkway in Orem, per Google). Check its registry terms directly before relying on them; we could not confirm them from Dillard's site. Online-only and universal registries let you combine items from several stores on one list, which helps if you want a local shop's items alongside a big-box registry.

Local shops for gifts off the registry

Some guests skip the registry on purpose and want something local. These shops are in Utah County and carry gift, kitchen or home goods, according to their Google business listings in October 2026. Hours are as listed there; check before you drive.

Kitchen and baking

A good baking pan set or a quality kitchen tool is a gift a young couple will use weekly.

Home and gift shops

Local makers

For more ideas by category, our local makers gift guide and our shopping in Provo guide cover the wider range, and the Shops at Riverwoods guide covers the north Provo center where Heirloom Art Co. sits.

A practical note: many of these shops are closed on Sunday, and several close at 5 or 6 p.m. A guest shopping on the way to a Saturday evening reception should go in the morning.

The registry etiquette that varies here

Where the gift goes. Our open-house guide suggests putting the guest book and card box after the receiving line, so gifts and cards collect near the exit. Some couples list a parent's address on the registry for shipped gifts, which keeps packages off a student apartment's doorstep.

Cash and funds. Some registries let couples add a cash, honeymoon or experience fund. A fund on the registry lets guests choose, without asking for money on the invitation.

Thank-you notes. Keep a list as gifts arrive, with who gave what. The reception table is a blur; the list is how you remember who to thank for the mixing bowls.

If plans change. The Emily Post Institute advises that if a wedding is postponed, gifts do not need to be sent back, while a canceled wedding means offering to return them. Our guide to postponing or canceling a wedding covers the rest of that conversation.

Timing the registry

Set the registry up before invitations go out, so the link can go on your wedding website. Our wedding timeline puts registry creation alongside invitations, and our invitations and stationery guide covers what to print and what to put online. If you also have a bridal shower, set up the registry before the shower invitations; our bridal showers guide covers the timing.

Which Target stores are in Provo and Orem?
Google's listings in October 2026 show three: 175 West Center Street in Orem, 1200 Towne Centre Boulevard in Provo, and a smaller store at 1290 North State Street in Provo. Target says registry items can be returned or exchanged for up to a year.

Terms change; read the current fine print before you register.
How many items should a Utah Valley couple register for?
Enough to cover every price range your guests are likely to spend in, with plenty of smaller items if you are holding an open-house reception. There is no published local norm. Register for more items than you expect to receive, so late shoppers still have choices.
Is it acceptable to ask for cash in Utah Valley?
Some registries let you add a cash or experience fund alongside physical items. Putting the fund on the registry, linked from your wedding website, lets guests choose without the invitation asking for money.
Where can guests buy a local gift instead of a registry item?
Kitchen shops such as Bosch Kitchen Center in Orem, home and gift shops such as Brambles & Blossoms on South State Street in Provo and Heirloom Art Co. at Riverwoods, and local-maker shops such as Locals at University Place. Check hours before you go; several close on Sundays.
What happens to registry gifts if the wedding is canceled?
The Emily Post Institute advises offering to return gifts if a wedding is canceled, and says gifts do not need to be returned if the wedding is only postponed. A registry's return window, such as Target's one year, helps if gifts arrive before a cancellation.
Should guests bring gifts to the reception or ship them?
Either works. If you ship, use the address the couple lists on their registry, which may be a parent's house. At an open-house reception, look for the card box or gift table, often placed after the receiving line.
