Valentine's Day in Utah Valley: Reservations, Ideas, Budgets (2027)

Utah County is, by most measures, the most married county of its size in the United States, and the ones who are not married are mostly dating with intent. Valentine's Day here is therefore not a holiday for a subset of the population; it is closer to a civic event, with the bottlenecks to prove it. The good restaurants are booked by the third week of January. The babysitters are gone by the first week of February. The florists stop taking orders. And in 2027, the holiday falls on a Sunday, which in this valley effectively moves it to Saturday.

This guide is the plan. It covers the calendar problem and why the 13th is the real date, the reservation strategy for a county of small restaurants, the Sundance evening in its expensive and achievable forms, the theater and concert options, what sells out and when to order it, the cheap versions that work because so many couples here are students, the married-with-kids version and the babysitter economy, and the single and friends alternatives. Prices and dates are the pattern from recent years; every venue sets its own Valentine's menu and schedule in late January, and you should confirm with the venue before you plan an evening around it.

The Calendar Problem: Sunday the 14th

February 14, 2027 is a Sunday. In most places that is a mild inconvenience. In Utah County it changes the holiday.

A large share of the valley's restaurants close on Sunday — the independents especially, and most of the ones a couple would choose for the night — and a large share of its couples do not dine out on Sunday as a matter of religious practice. The effect is that the Valentine's weekend has two heavy nights, Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th, with Saturday the heavier, and a Sunday that is quieter than a normal Sunday at the restaurants that open and busy only at the theaters and the resorts.

The practical consequences:

If you keep the Sabbath, Saturday the 13th is your Valentine's, and you are competing with most of the county for it. Book early, consider Friday, and treat Sunday as the at-home evening — which a lot of Utah County couples prefer anyway.

The theaters and the resorts treat the whole weekend as Valentine's and program accordingly.

In 2028 the holiday is a Monday and the problem largely goes away; in 2027 it is the first thing to plan around.

The Reservation Strategy

Utah Valley's romantic restaurants are small. The Tree Room at Sundance, Communal in downtown Provo, Block on Center Street, the two or three white-tablecloth rooms at the Riverwoods and University Place, the Italian places that a couple would drive to — none of them seats more than a few dozen at a time, and on the Saturday before Valentine's each one turns its tables two or three times to a valley of couples who all had the same idea. The pattern that works:

Book by January 20. Most of the small rooms open Valentine's reservations in the first half of January and are full for Saturday the 13th within two weeks. Several run a fixed-price Valentine's menu that weekend — three or four courses at a set price above the regular card, sometimes with a wine or mocktail pairing — and take reservations on it specifically; ask, because the set menu is often the only thing served that night and it is not always what you would have ordered.

Book a backup. A second-choice room, and cancel the one you are not using a week out. The valley's restaurants know they are overbooked that weekend and forgive a timely cancellation; they do not forgive a no-show.

Or eat at 5 or at 8:30. The seatings still available at the last minute are the early and late ones. An early dinner with a show after, or a late dinner after a walk, is the same evening rearranged.

Or eat at lunch on Saturday. The restaurants are calm, the babysitter is available, and the Saturday-lunch version of the Tree Room or Communal costs half what the dinner does.

Or take it home. Several of the county's best restaurants sell a Valentine's takeout box or a prepared dinner for two the week of; the dessert shops do the same. A dinner at home after the kids are down, from a restaurant you could not get into, is a Utah County tradition born of necessity.

The Sundance Evening

Sundance is the valley's canonical Valentine's — the resort thirty minutes up Provo Canyon with the fireplaces, the snow, the two real restaurants and the rooms — and it is priced and booked accordingly. Three versions:

The expensive one. A Tree Room reservation, the resort's fine-dining room with the art on the walls and a fixed-price Valentine's menu, and a room or a cabin upstairs at a Valentine's-weekend rate. Book both in the first week of January. It is the most romantic night the county sells.

The achievable one. Night skiing under the lights (the resort runs it several evenings a week in February), then the Foundry Grill — the more casual, more available restaurant with the same setting — or one drink at the Owl Bar, the bar with the century-old Rosewood bar top that the resort's founder bought from a Wyoming saloon. The Foundry takes reservations and holds walk-in space; the Owl Bar does not take reservations and is packed by 8.

The free one. The drive up the canyon, the walk through the resort's snowy village, the lights on the mountain, a hot chocolate at the deli. Nobody charges for the setting.

The resort also runs sleigh rides when there is snow, the Nordic center's evening trails, and, in some years, a Valentine's package that bundles dinner and a room. Beyond Dinner

Theater. Hale Center Theater Orem and the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo both program February for the holiday — romances, musicals, the occasional comedy — and sell out the Valentine's weekend; Hale's intimate house and its production quality make it the default valley date, and its Valentine's-weekend tickets go in January. Music. The BYU and UVU music schools stage more free and cheap performances in February than most cities see in a year — faculty recitals, chamber concerts, the jazz ensembles, the choirs — and several fall on the Valentine's weekend. The Utah Valley Symphony has played a Valentine's program in some years; the downtown Provo venues book love-song nights and singer-songwriters. Skating. Peaks Ice Arena in Provo runs public skating sessions, and Provo's and Orem's outdoor rinks are open in February when the weather cooperates; both are cheap and photograph well.

What Sells Out, and When to Order It

Flowers. The valley's florists take Valentine's orders from the first of February and stop when they reach capacity, usually several days before the holiday. Roses double in wholesale price for the week, which is why every florist will tell you the non-rose arrangement is both the better value and the one she would rather make. Order the first week of February; pick up rather than deliver on the 13th, when the delivery routes run hours late. Our florists guide names the shops.

Babysitters. The real bottleneck in a county this full of young families. The teenagers and college students who sit are booked for Saturday the 13th by the first week of February and the rate rises. Ask in January, trade nights with another couple, or use the Saturday-lunch strategy.

The Cheap Version

Utah Valley is unusually good at the inexpensive date because so many of its couples are students, and the cheap Valentine's works exactly as well on the 13th as on a Tuesday:

A sunset walk on the Provo River Parkway, or up Rock Canyon to the first bench, and hot chocolate after.
A $5 or free concert at BYU's or UVU's music school.
Ice skating at Peaks for the price of a rental.
The dollar theater and a bakery box.
The drive to Sundance to watch the night skiing from the lot, then one drink at the Owl Bar.
The library café and a bookstore.
Cooking the Tree Room's dessert at home from the cookbook.

The Married-With-Kids Version

This is most of the county, and the holiday is built around the sitter. The strategies that work here: book the sitter in January; trade nights with another couple so each has an evening; go to lunch on Saturday instead of dinner; do the dinner at home after bedtime with takeout from the restaurant you could not get into; or make the 14th a family holiday, which a lot of Utah County homes do — heart-shaped pancakes, the kids' valentines from school, a family Sunday dinner with the children in on it, the grandparents' cookie-decorating afternoon. The Single and Friends Version

The valley's single population is large — two universities, a mid-singles scene, a growing number of single adults — and it has built its own Valentine's: Galentine's dinners among friends, for which the restaurants now take group reservations; ward and stake singles dances and activities on the weekend, listed on the LDS singles calendar; the anti-Valentine's comedy and open-mic nights downtown; the running, climbing and hiking groups that schedule a Saturday morning out on purpose. A single person in Provo who wants company on February 14 can find it, and one who wants a quiet night should know the theaters, the bookstores and the trails are empty.

The Timeline, Working Backward

The holiday rewards people who start in the first week of January, which is not how most couples think about February.

First week of January. Sundance rooms and the Tree Room, if that is the plan; Midway inns; the Hale and Covey Valentine's-weekend performances the day tickets open. Ask the regular babysitter to hold Saturday the 13th.

Second and third weeks of January. Restaurant reservations for Saturday the 13th and a backup; the fixed-price menus are posted by now and worth reading before committing. Concert tickets at the two music schools if the program is announced.

First week of February. Florist order, dessert or chocolate pre-order, spa or skating reservation. Confirm the sitter. Decide whether the evening is Friday, Saturday or Sunday and tell the restaurant which reservation to cancel.

The week of. Check the canyon road forecast if Sundance is the plan; pick up flowers rather than waiting on a delivery; confirm the theater's curtain time, which some houses move earlier on the holiday weekend. If the whole thing has fallen through, the 5 p.m. and 8:30 seatings, the Saturday lunch and the takeout-at-home version are all still available, and the river walk needs no reservation at all.

The 14th itself, a Sunday. For the couples who keep it, the at-home day: the family breakfast, the church calendar, dinner the two of you cooked. For the couples who do not, the quietest reservation of the year at the places that open.

The Short Version

Valentine's 2027 is a Sunday, so in Utah Valley it is really Saturday the 13th, with Friday the 12th second. Book the restaurant by January 20 and a backup besides, or eat at 5, at 8:30, or at Saturday lunch. Sundance is the canonical night — the Tree Room and a room is the expensive version, night skiing and the Foundry the achievable one.
