Orem Community Hospital is the smallest of central Utah County's three hospitals, and it has a clear specialty: having babies. It opened in 1981 as a maternity hospital, grew into a full-service community hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, and still describes labor and delivery as what it does best. It is an Intermountain Health hospital at 331 North 400 West in Orem, main number 801-224-4080.
What follows covers the practical questions: which door is the ER, what the hospital does and does not handle, what giving birth there looks like, and the parts of the campus most people do not know about. It is information about the facility, not medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.
Finding it, and finding the right door
Intermountain's campus map for the hospital gives the cleanest directions:
- From I-15: take exit 271 and head east on Center Street toward the mountains. Turn left (north) on 400 West.
- For the hospital: turn left into the hospital lot before 400 North. There are two entrances.
- For the Outpatient Services Center (neuro rehab, pediatric rehab, and the Orem OB-GYN and nurse midwife clinic): turn left on 400 North and take the second left into that parking lot.
The campus map labels the buildings by number:
- Main entrance: the Commons Café, gift shop, laboratory, lactation clinic, registration, and imaging (X-ray, CT, mammography, ultrasound, DEXA and MRI).
- Central Orem Clinic: family medicine, Summit OB-GYN and pediatrics.
- Women's Center: labor and delivery, mom-baby, and medical-surgical rooms.
- Same-day surgery, with its own entrance.
- Outpatient Services Center: neuro rehab, pediatric rehab, and Orem OB-GYN and nurse midwives.
The emergency room entrance is on the south side of the hospital, according to the map.
The emergency room: what it is, and what it is not
The emergency department is open 24/7 and its number is 801-714-3326. Intermountain says its goal across its emergency departments is to see patients within 30 minutes of arrival.
What it is not: a designated trauma center. Orem Community does not appear on the Utah Bureau of EMS trauma center list dated April 14, 2025, which includes Utah Valley Hospital (Level II), American Fork and Timpanogos Regional (Level III), and Spanish Fork (Level IV) in Utah County. That does not mean the ER cannot treat injuries; it means the most serious trauma generally goes elsewhere, and the ambulance crew decides.
If you live in central Orem or Vineyard and the problem is serious but not a 911 trauma, this is often the closest door. If it may not be an emergency at all, our urgent care or the ER guide walks through the options, and the urgent care locations map lists the walk-in clinics.
What the hospital offers
Intermountain's description: in addition to maternity care, Orem Community offers emergency, surgical, laboratory and outpatient imaging services including MRI, and it is the centralized location for pediatric and neuro rehabilitation for the region. Its published department list:
| Service | Phone |
|---|---|
| Emergency | 801-714-3326 |
| Women's Center | 801-714-3018 |
| Level II nursery | 801-714-3018 |
| Lactation clinic | 801-714-3324 |
| Imaging and ultrasound | 801-714-3334 |
| Surgical services | 801-714-3369 |
| Lab services | 801-714-3219 |
| Orem neuro physical therapy and rehab | 801-714-3366 |
| Primary Children's pediatric rehabilitation | 833-577-3422 |
The pediatric rehabilitation program is run under the Primary Children's Hospital name. If your child has been referred for outpatient therapy after an injury or for a developmental condition, there is a good chance it happens here.
Having a baby at Orem Community
This is the hospital's core. From Intermountain's pages:
- One room, start to finish. Intermountain says mothers can labor, deliver and recover in the same suite, and that the hospital is consistently rated in the top percentile nationwide for patients' likelihood to recommend it for childbirth.
- Midwives and OB-GYNs. A team of certified nurse midwives and OB-GYNs practices at the hospital's Women's Center. Leslie DiVall, an advanced practice provider there, is quoted on Intermountain's page explaining that a certified nurse midwife is an advanced practice professional with an advanced nursing degree, different from entry-level midwives.
- Simply Birth. A program that offers families a larger room and tubs for labor while keeping medical support close by, with a personalized plan through pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. Epidurals, other pain management and cesarean delivery are all available; the team includes OB-GYNs who perform C-sections.
- The nursery. Intermountain lists a Level II nursery rather than a NICU. Babies who need more intensive care can be moved to a higher-level unit; Utah Valley Hospital and Timpanogos Regional both have NICUs.
- Lactation clinic, relocated into the main hospital to make it easier for new mothers to reach.
The midwife team's page also says the clinic sees patients for far more than pregnancy, including annual wellness exams, menopause care, medical weight loss and mental health.
For comparing hospitals and providers across the county, see having a baby in Utah Valley and finding an OB-GYN or midwife. Parents of newborns may also want finding a pediatrician.
Visiting
- Visiting hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., per Intermountain's listing. Units can set stricter rules.
- Gift shop: in the east entrance main lobby, Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (801-714-3251), as listed in October 2026.
- Food: the Commons Café is at the main entrance, per the campus map.
The campus most people never notice
Orem Community sits on a 30-plus-acre campus that the hospital describes as a community space:
- A one-mile paved walking path around the grounds.
- Youth soccer fields and adult ultimate frisbee leagues.
- A community garden with 44 raised beds, used since 2015 by Orem and Vineyard residents to grow produce. The hospital's history page says the annual Harvest Good Health Festival was started to celebrate it.
Volunteering. The hospital lists volunteer roles in the gift shop, the lobby information desk, the ER, imaging, mom-baby, and the garden. Volunteers must be at least 14, give at least four hours a week for six months, and meet vaccination requirements; Intermountain says the application process takes at least three weeks. Its page also says the online application link will return after pandemic restrictions are lifted, so call the hospital to ask how to apply now.
A short history
From the hospital's own timeline:
- 1981: opens as a maternity hospital.
- 1986: a 13,000-square-foot expansion makes it a full-service hospital with an emergency room, a Women's Center, medical-surgical care, a lab, X-ray and health education.
- 1995: the Central Orem Health Center, an Intermountain WorkMed unit and the Utah Valley Pediatric Rehabilitation Center are added; the walking path and soccer fields come with a partnership with Orem City.
- 2014: a renovated main entrance and clinic.
- 2015: the community garden opens.
- 2017: MRI services added through a freestanding facility a few blocks away.
- 2020: testing space and staff for COVID-19.
The hospital does not publish a bed count on its Intermountain pages, so we have not given one.
Insurance and bills

Intermountain offers online price estimates, financial assistance, payment plans and medical records requests from the hospital's page. For coverage options, see health insurance in Utah, explained.
Where it fits
Orem has two hospitals a few blocks apart on the north side of town. Timpanogos Regional (HCA) is the larger one, with a Level III trauma ER, a pediatric ER and a Level III NICU. Orem Community (Intermountain) is the smaller one, centered on births, rehab and a 24-hour ER for everyday emergencies. Utah Valley Hospital in Provo is the region's flagship; see our Utah Valley Hospital guide. Our networks explainer shows which system runs each one.
