American Fork Hospital: The North County's Intermountain Hospital, From the ER Entrance to the Level II NICU

American Fork Hospital at 170 N 1100 E: the 24/7 Level III trauma ER, labor and delivery, the Level II NICU, the cancer center, visiting hours and history.

American Fork Hospital is Intermountain Health's hospital for the north end of Utah County. It sits on the bench at 170 North 1100 East in American Fork, with a main number of 801-855-3300, and it has a 24-hour emergency department, a trauma designation, a maternity unit with a Level II NICU, and a cancer center. If you live in American Fork, Highland, Alpine, Lehi, Cedar Hills or Pleasant Grove, this is often the nearest hospital.

This guide covers what you need on the day: the emergency entrance, the services inside, visiting, and how the hospital fits with its neighbors. It is information about the facility, not medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.

Getting to the emergency department

The department offers emergency and trauma care. The state Bureau of EMS trauma center list (dated April 14, 2025) shows American Fork Hospital as a Level III trauma center, first designated January 5, 2012, with the current designation running to March 21, 2028. In practical terms, it is staffed and equipped for serious injuries, with the most complex adult trauma in the county going to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, the only Level II center on that list between Salt Lake County and St. George. See our Utah Valley Hospital guide for that campus.

What to bring to an Intermountain ER, from Intermountain's own emergency page: photo ID, a list of current medications (or the bottles), known allergies, emergency contacts, and legal documents such as an advance directive. If someone may have swallowed something poisonous, bring the container.

Not sure it is an emergency? The InstaCare urgent care is next door (below). Our urgent care or the ER guide covers how to choose.

The urgent care next door

The American Fork Specialty Clinic InstaCare is at 98 North 1100 East, a short walk from the hospital, phone 801-492-2550. It is walk-in urgent care, no appointment needed. Google's listing in October 2026 showed hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week; check before you go, since hours change.

Heal at Home. The hospital's page also advertises Intermountain's hospital-at-home program, which brings hospital-level care to patients' homes for certain conditions. Ask your care team whether it applies.

Having a baby here

The hospital's about page describes its women's and newborn caregivers as a top draw for maternity care in the north county, a Level II NICU that it says is expanding, and an on-site lactation clinic (801-855-3603). A Level II nursery cares for babies who need more than a well-baby nursery but not the highest level of intensive care; very premature or critically ill newborns may be transferred to a higher-level unit.

Classes on pregnancy and childbirth are listed through Intermountain's classes page for the hospital. For choosing a provider and a place to deliver, see having a baby in Utah Valley and our guide to finding an OB-GYN or midwife.

The cancer center

American Fork Hospital has a longer cancer history than most community hospitals. Its history page says the first Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Center opened there in 2005. The about page says Intermountain Cancer Center at American Fork Hospital earned accreditation from the American Society for Radiation Oncology's APEx program, which reviews radiation oncology practices.

Visiting

A short history

The hospital's own timeline is a compact history of north Utah County's growth:

One number the hospital states two ways. The same about page describes "a medical staff of more than 300 doctors representing 30 specialties" in one paragraph and "a medical staff of more than 450 in 30 specialties" in the timeline. Both are the hospital's own words; we report both.

The page also says the hospital has been recognized several times as one of America's top 100 hospitals, and lists awards from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Vizient and the Utah Safety Council.

Insurance and bills

American Fork Hospital is Intermountain, so plans built around Intermountain generally include it, but confirm with your insurer before a planned procedure or birth. Intermountain's pages link to price estimates for upcoming procedures, financial assistance, payment plans and medical records requests. If you are uninsured, our guide to free and low-cost clinics in Utah County covers the non-hospital options.
