Snowshoeing is the least gatekept winter activity in the Wasatch. There is no lesson to take, no lift ticket, no gear that costs more than a decent pair of boots, and no skill that takes longer than the first ten minutes of the first outing to acquire.
That accessibility is genuinely wonderful and it produces one specific problem: it puts people into serious mountain terrain without the intermediate steps that would normally have taught them to read it. A skier arrives in the backcountry having passed through resorts, lessons and usually some avalanche education. A snowshoer can arrive in identical terrain having bought a pair of snowshoes that afternoon.
So this guide leads with terrain rather than with gear.
The terrain question comes first
The single most useful fact about snowshoeing near Provo is that snowshoes will carry you onto avalanche terrain effortlessly and without announcing that they have done so.
Avalanche terrain has a reasonably crisp definition: slopes steep enough to slide, which in practice means roughly thirty degrees and steeper, plus everything underneath such a slope. The second half of that is what catches people. A flat meadow directly beneath a steep loaded slope is avalanche terrain, because the hazard is the slope above, not the ground underfoot.
Utah Valley sits directly against a steep range. The canyons that provide the good winter walking — Rock Canyon, Provo Canyon and its side drainages, the American Fork drainage, the Nebo country to the south — are steep-walled by nature. The terrain that is safe and the terrain that is not are frequently within a few hundred yards of each other, and the boundary is not marked.
The Utah Avalanche Center publishes daily forecasts through the winter season covering the mountain ranges near the valley. This is the check that comes before choosing a route, not after. It is free, it takes two minutes to read, and it is produced by forecasters who were in that snowpack. For a snowshoer who does not want to engage with any of this — which is an entirely reasonable position — the answer is to stay deliberately on low-angle terrain with nothing steep above it. Valley-floor trails, river parkway routes, and the flatter reservoir and meadow country to the east all qualify. That is a real and rewarding version of the sport, and it removes the hazard rather than managing it.
What snowshoes actually do, and when they are the wrong tool
A snowshoe does exactly one thing: it spreads your weight over a larger area so you sink less. That is flotation, and it is the entire mechanism.
This has a consequence people find counterintuitive. On a hard, packed surface, a snowshoe is worse than a boot. It is heavier, wider, less precise on a narrow track, and its traction hardware is designed for snow rather than for ice. A popular trail three days after the last storm, walked into a firm boot-packed ribbon and then refrozen overnight, is a microspike trail. Carrying snowshoes on it is carrying weight for nothing.
Microspikes are the opposite tool: a rubber harness with small chains and spikes that pulls over a boot and provides traction on hard snow and ice while providing zero flotation. They weigh very little, cost far less than snowshoes, and are the correct choice on the majority of days on the most-used trails near town.
The honest local practice is that experienced winter walkers here own both and decide at the trailhead, sometimes carrying one on the pack while wearing the other. The deciding question is simply: is the surface holding my weight? If a bare boot sinks past the ankle, that is the flotation case. If it does not sink at all and slides, that is the traction case.
Traction devices come in a range from light running spikes through to full mountaineering crampons. For the trails discussed here, the light chain-and-spike category is the right one; crampons are a tool for steep frozen terrain and require a stiff boot and a different skill set entirely.
Poles, and why they matter more here than in summer
Trekking poles with snow baskets are close to essential and are the cheapest large improvement available.
They do three things. They provide balance on an unstable, uneven surface where every footfall settles differently. They let you probe ahead, which reveals the depth of a drift, the presence of a hidden creek, or the void alongside a buried log before you step into it. And they take a meaningful load off the legs on a climb where you are lifting weighted feet with every step.
The snow basket — the wide disc near the tip — is the part that matters and the part people forget. A summer pole tip without a basket sinks straight through soft snow to the hilt and provides no support at all.
Clothing: the sweat problem, not the cold problem
Snowshoeing produces far more heat than its gentle appearance suggests. Breaking trail through fresh snow on an incline is genuinely hard work, and the most common winter clothing failure here is not being underdressed for the cold. It is being overdressed for the effort, soaking the base layer through, and then chilling severely at the first stop.
The working principle: be slightly cold at the trailhead. Within ten minutes of walking you will be comfortable, and if you were comfortable standing still at the car, you will be overheating.
Layers that work in this climate:
- A base layer of wool or synthetic, never cotton. Cotton holds water against the skin and stops insulating entirely once wet, which is why the old advice about it is repeated so persistently.
- An active layer that breathes — a light fleece or grid fleece — worn while moving.
- An insulating layer carried and put on the moment you stop, not carried and forgotten. This is the layer that prevents the post-climb chill.
- A shell for wind and falling snow, which in a dry continental snowpack is often needed for wind more than for wet.
Footwear and gaiters are where the outing is actually won or lost. Waterproof boots, and gaiters to close the gap between boot and trouser, because snow enters at the ankle and melts, and wet feet in cold conditions end outings early and occasionally dangerously.
Sun protection deserves a mention that it rarely gets in winter guides. At this elevation, on a bright day, with snow reflecting from below, the ultraviolet exposure is severe and the burn pattern is unusual — under the chin, under the nose, inside the nostrils. Sunglasses and sunscreen are winter equipment here, not summer equipment.
Reading the effort correctly
The most common planning error is applying summer distances to winter conditions.
A useful working rule is that a snowshoe outing covers roughly half the ground of the same summer hike for the same time and effort, and considerably less than half when breaking trail in fresh deep snow. Breaking trail is dramatically harder than following one, which is why a group naturally rotates the lead and why the second person through has a materially easier day than the first.
Elevation gain is punished more heavily in winter than distance is. A route that climbs steadily through soft snow is exhausting in a way that its summer profile does not predict.
Plan short. A first snowshoe outing that turns around after ninety minutes and is enjoyable is a better introduction than a four-hour epic that ends in the dark with somebody miserable.
Daylight in a Wasatch canyon
Sunset time is misleading here and the reason is topographic. These canyons are steep and their walls are high. The sun drops behind a ridge long before it drops below the horizon, and when it does, the temperature falls quickly and the light goes flat and blue.
In midwinter, a canyon route can be effectively in shade by mid-afternoon. Plan turnaround times against the light leaving the canyon rather than against the published sunset, and carry a headlamp on every winter outing regardless of how short it is meant to be. A headlamp weighs almost nothing and converts a genuine problem into an inconvenience.
Etiquette, and the groomed-track rule
Winter trail etiquette has one rule that carries real weight and several that are ordinary courtesy.
Never walk on groomed cross-country ski tracks. This is the important one. A groomed nordic trail has set classic tracks and a skating lane, and a snowshoe print in either one leaves a hole that freezes solid overnight and becomes a genuine hazard for a skier moving at speed. Venues that permit snowshoeing designate a separate lane, generally at the edge of the corridor. Where no snowshoe lane is designated, snowshoeing is not permitted on that trail — that is what the absence means.
The rest is straightforward. Do not walk in the middle of a boot-packed track in a way that widens and destroys it. Step aside for faster users. Pack out everything, which includes fruit peel that will still be there when the snow melts in April. And if you break trail somewhere lovely, understand that you have built a route that others will follow, which is a small responsibility worth taking seriously in avalanche terrain.
Wildlife in winter, and why it matters more now
Winter is when disturbance costs animals the most. Deer, elk and moose spend the season on a strict energy deficit, living on reserves accumulated in autumn, and every time a person makes one run, that animal spends stored energy it cannot replace until spring. Repeated disturbance across a winter measurably harms survival, which is why winter range closures exist and why they are worth respecting even when the terrain beyond them looks empty and appealing.
Moose are the specific concern in Wasatch canyons. They are common here, they are far larger than people expect, and their response to a perceived threat is not to flee. A moose on a trail is a reason to turn around, not a photograph opportunity. Give enormous distance, and never place yourself between a cow and a calf.
Where the routes near Provo sit
Rather than publishing a route list that will age badly, here is the framework that local snowshoers actually use, which is elevation and aspect.
Valley floor and parkway routes hold snow briefly and inconsistently but are flat, safe from avalanche hazard entirely, and accessible without a drive. Good for a snowy morning immediately after a storm.
Lower canyon routes — the mouths and lower reaches of the canyons east of the valley — hold snow much longer, offer real scenery, and are where the terrain question starts to matter. Some are entirely low-angle; some run beneath steep walls.
Upper canyon and higher terrain holds the most reliable snow, offers the best walking, and contains the most avalanche terrain. This is where the forecast stops being advisory and becomes the thing that determines whether the outing happens.

Renting before buying
Snowshoes are inexpensive relative to most winter gear but not free, and sizing matters — flotation scales with the surface area of the shoe against the weight it carries, including the pack. Somebody heavy in deep snow on an undersized shoe gets the disadvantages of both tools.
Renting for the first outing or two is the sensible route, and it also answers the question of whether you enjoy the activity before committing. Outdoor retailers and university outdoor programs in the valley commonly rent winter gear, though specific rental offerings and pricing change season to season and are worth confirming directly rather than assuming.
The short version
Check the avalanche forecast before choosing a route, every time. Decide between snowshoes and microspikes at the trailhead based on whether your boot sinks. Dress cool, carry an insulating layer for stops, and keep your feet dry. Halve your summer distance expectation. Turn around when the light leaves the canyon. Stay off the groomed tracks.
Beyond that, it is walking, which is the entire appeal.
Navigation when the trail disappears
Summer hiking near Provo is largely a matter of following an obvious path. Winter removes that, and the removal is more complete than people expect.
Fresh snow erases tread entirely. Trail markers sit at eye height in summer and can be at knee height or buried in deep winter. Cairns vanish. Signposts at junctions get plastered with rime on the windward side. And the tracks that do exist may have been made by somebody who was also lost, or who was going somewhere you do not want to go.
Three consequences follow.
Carry navigation you can actually use with cold hands. A phone with offline maps downloaded in advance is the standard, and the phrase that matters is downloaded in advance — canyon coverage is patchy and a map that needs to load is not a map. Battery life falls sharply in cold, so keep the phone against the body rather than in an outside pocket and carry a power bank on longer days.
Note your return route as you go, particularly at junctions and at the point where you leave an obvious feature. Terrain looks fundamentally different in the other direction and in flatter afternoon light.
Do not assume you can follow your own tracks back. In wind or continuing snowfall they fill within an hour or two, and the assumption that they will be there is the mechanism behind a lot of winter navigation trouble.
Cold injury, briefly but seriously
Snowshoeing rarely produces dramatic emergencies. It produces cold injuries, and the pattern is consistent enough to be worth naming.
Frostnip and frostbite concentrate at the extremities — fingers, toes, ears, nose, cheeks — and the early warning is numbness after a period of aching. Numbness is the signal to act rather than to push on. Wind is the accelerant; the same air temperature is far more dangerous moving than still.
Hypothermia in this activity typically arrives by the wet route rather than the cold route. Somebody sweats heavily on a climb, stops, and the soaked base layer strips heat rapidly while they stand still. The early signs are shivering, clumsiness and poor judgment, and poor judgment is the dangerous one, because the person affected stops being a reliable reporter of their own condition. Watching your companions is a real function.
The prevention for both is the same and it is dull: manage layers actively, put insulation on at every stop rather than at the stop where you finally feel cold, keep feet dry, eat regularly, and drink. Dehydration in winter is easy to reach because thirst is blunted in cold and because the air here is very dry at altitude, and a dehydrated person is measurably more susceptible to cold injury.
Making it a family outing
Snowshoeing suits mixed-ability groups better than almost any other winter activity, because the pace is set by whoever is slowest without anybody being stuck on a lift or a slope beyond them.
For children, the useful adjustments are: much shorter distances than the adults would choose, a destination that is a thing rather than a distance, frequent stops with food, and the acceptance that the outing may become a two-hour exploration of a hundred yards of forest, which is a success rather than a failure.
Children's snowshoes exist and work. The size that matters is the one matched to the child's weight, not their shoe size. Cold hands end children's outings faster than anything else, so spare gloves are close to mandatory — wet gloves from playing in snow are not optional to plan around, they are certain.
The case for going
It is worth saying plainly what makes this worth the preparation.
The canyons east of this valley are busy places in summer. Trailheads fill, parking overflows, and solitude requires effort and early starts. In winter the same terrain empties almost entirely. A trail that carries hundreds of people on a July Saturday may carry a handful in January, and the experience of walking a familiar canyon in silence with the creek running under ice is genuinely different from walking it in July.
The cost of entry is a pair of snowshoes or a pair of microspikes, a willingness to read a forecast, and the discipline to turn around on time. Against most ways of spending a winter Saturday in this valley, that is a remarkably low bar for what it returns.
