Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and in Utah Valley the materials for a handmade table are mostly gone by then. The local flower market closes in mid-October, the leaves brown after the first freeze, and the farm pumpkin seasons end around Halloween. The table crafts that work here are planned a month early and finished with what local shops sell year-round.
So this page starts with a calendar, then goes around the table piece by piece.
The calendar runs backward from October
| When (2026) | What happens | For your table |
|---|---|---|
| Oct. 14 | Last Utah Flower Market of the season | Buy stems to dry for the centerpiece |
| About Oct. 21 | Median first freeze in Provo | Press yard leaves before they brown |
| Oct. 30 | Rowley's Red Barn Fall Festival closes | Last farm pumpkins and squash |
| Nov. 12 | Luminaria opens at Thanksgiving Point | Paper-lantern ideas for the table |
| Nov. 21 | Provo Farmers Market winter market opens | Local vendors, indoors |
| Nov. 26 | Thanksgiving | Assemble |
The freeze date comes from NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station, which put the median first 32-degree night on October 21 and the first 28-degree night around November 1. The Utah Flower Market (Grove Station, 273 South 2000 West, Pleasant Grove) sells Utah-grown flowers on Wednesdays from April through mid-October, with public hours from 11 a.m. to noon. Rowley's Red Barn's Fall Festival in Santaquin runs September 19 to October 30, 2026. Note that Rowley's has no apples to pick this year; the farm says spring frost destroyed its 2026 crop.
The centerpiece
- Pumpkins, a dried bundle and pressed leaves. Uncarved pumpkins from an October farm trip last far longer than carved ones and can carry a table to late November. Add a bundle of flowers hung to dry in October and a scatter of pressed leaves. Our fall craft ideas cover drying and pressing, and our pumpkin patch guide lists the farms.
- Paper-bag luminarias down the middle. Thanksgiving Point's Luminaria opens November 12 and runs to January 9, Monday through Saturday, at Ashton Gardens in Lehi; our Luminaria guide covers tickets. Small white paper bags with cut-out leaf shapes and a battery tea light inside bring the same glow to a long table.
Keep flames away from dried material. The National Fire Protection Association warns that dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable and should be kept well away from open flames and heat sources, and it says candle decorations should be attended at all times. On a table built from dried leaves and stems, use battery candles.
The place cards
- Pressed-leaf place cards. Fold cardstock into tents, glue a pressed leaf to each and write the guest's name in white or gold pen. The Paper Store and More at 1786 South State Street in Orem sells paper, cardstock and envelopes, open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday until 3 (closed Sunday), as listed in October 2026.
- Cookie place cards. A leaf-shaped sugar cookie with each name piped on in icing is a place card guests eat. Bosch Kitchen Center at 176 West Center Street in Orem was listed as open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; its reviewers mention many cookie cutters, candy supplies and flat packs of parchment. Baking Me Crazy, a baking-supply shop at 4801 North University Avenue, Suite 125, in the Riverwoods in Provo, was listed as open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; reviewers describe its range of colors and decorating tools and mention classes and cookie-decorating sessions there.
- A printed menu at each plate. Design one card and have it printed on heavy stock. Carol's Copy Center at 108 North State Street in Orem (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday until 5) is a local print shop whose reviewers mention a choice of paper weights and colors and lamination.
The kids' table
- A paper-chain gratitude count. Each child writes one thing they are thankful for on a strip of colored paper each day in November, and the chain grows into the table's garland by the 26th.
- Leaf rubbings as placemats. Crayons on their sides over pressed leaves, on plain paper, then laminated at a print shop so they survive the gravy.
- A borrowed-kit afternoon. The Provo City Library offers a monthly creator kit of craft supplies (borrowed at the first-floor reference desk for use in the library); October 2026's was 3D paper pumpkins. Call 801-852-6661 to ask what November's is, and make it a Saturday outing before the holiday.
The Friendsgiving version
Provo's Thanksgiving week has its own local wrinkle: college students who can't get home and end up cooking in apartments for whoever is left. Our Thanksgiving in Utah Valley guide covers that student problem and who is open. For the table itself, the budget crafts are the best ones.
- A gratitude garland. Cut leaf shapes from cardstock, have each guest write a line on one before dinner, punch holes and string them on twine across a window. It needs paper, a marker, a hole punch and string.
- Potluck labels. Folded cards listing each dish and its allergens: useful at a table where nobody knows who cooked what. Making Space Thrift at 475 North Freedom Boulevard sells donated craft supplies cheaply if you are starting with nothing.
The weekend after
Thanksgiving weekend turns the valley toward Christmas. The Provo Farmers Market winter market runs Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Provo Towne Centre (1200 Towne Centre Boulevard) from November 21 to December 19, and the Christmas boutique circuit is in full swing; see our Christmas boutiques guide. If the leftover cardstock and dried stems are still on the table, they are the start of our Christmas crafts and handmade gifts. And if part of your family's Thanksgiving is giving, our holiday giving guide covers what local drives need.
