Valentine's Crafts in Utah Valley: The Sunday Problem, Paper Flowers in a Month With No Local Ones, Cards for Hospitalized Veterans and a Borrowed Cricut (2027)

Valentine's crafts for Utah Valley in 2027: Feb. 14 is a Sunday when craft stores close, plus paper sources, a library Cricut, and cards for veterans at the VA.

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on a Sunday. In Utah County that matters for crafters: the Hobby Lobby and Michaels in Orem, The Paper Store and More, Making Space Thrift and Heindselman's were all listed as closed Sundays when we checked in October 2026. Plan on Saturday, February 13 as your last shopping day for supplies. If you run out on the 14th, the nearest open craft store is the Michaels at 215 East 12300 South in Draper, listed as open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

That one calendar fact shapes the rest: shop early, make cards that need to travel even earlier, and keep the project list to things you can finish at a kitchen table in February.

Paper flowers, because February has no local ones

The Utah Flower Market, where Utah growers sell cut flowers to the public at Grove Station in Pleasant Grove, runs from April to mid-October. In February, the valley's local flowers are the ones you saved.

  1. Pressed-flower cards from last summer. If you pressed flowers from the market or a $15 Rowley's u-pick cup, February is when they earn their keep. Glue a few petals to folded cardstock and cover with clear contact paper. Our summer craft ideas explain how to set up next year's supply.
  2. Crepe-paper or cardstock roses. A dozen paper roses outlast real ones. Cardstock works for structured petals; crepe paper for soft ones.
  3. A dried-flower heart wreath. A heart-shaped wire frame wrapped with the dried bunches from summer and fall.

Where the paper comes from

The Paper Store and More, 1786 South State Street, Orem, sells paper, cardstock and envelopes in the store and online, open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday until 3, closed Sunday, as listed in October 2026. Reviewers mention it ordering envelope colors other stores don't stock.

Echo Park Paper Company, at 1226 South 1680 West in Orem, is a scrapbook-paper maker whose coordinated paper collections, stickers and journaling cards are sold online; Google lists no store hours, and reviewers describe ordering online. Our guide to craft-supply makers still in Utah County covers the rest.

Making Space Thrift, 475 North Freedom Boulevard, Provo, sells donated craft supplies at thrift prices; shoppers' reviews mention felt, stickers and ribbon. It is open Monday to Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday until 8.

  1. Felt heart garlands. Thrift-store felt cut into hearts, stitched or glued along a ribbon.
  2. A stack of classroom valentines. One sheet design repeated on cardstock and cut apart. If your child's class trades valentines, ask the teacher for the class count and any candy rules.

A cutting machine you can borrow

The Cricut has Utah County roots (our history of Provo Craft and the Cricut tells how a local craft store became a Nasdaq company), and the Provo City Library lends three of them. The Cricut Explore 3, Cricut Joy and Cricut Joy Xtra check out for one week to cardholders in good standing, from the Circulation Help Desk. They don't include materials, holds go through the library catalog, and late fees are $5 a day. Place the hold well before the week of the 14th.

  1. Cut-paper pop-up cards. The Explore 3 cuts cardstock, glitter paper and vinyl among more than 100 materials, which makes layered pop-up hearts practical for a whole class list.
  2. Vinyl-lettered mugs or jars. A name or a line of a favorite song on a plain mug from a thrift store, filled with candy.

Cards that travel: valentines for hospitalized veterans

Each Valentine's week the Department of Veterans Affairs holds National Salute to Veteran Patients, a tradition the VA dates to 1978, honoring veterans in its hospitals. The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System's 2025 release set the week as February 9 to 15 and invited the public to visit, volunteer or send Valentine's cards to the medical center at this address:

George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center Attention: CDCE (135) 500 Foothill Drive Salt Lake City, UT 84148

The release lists volunteer information at volunteer.va.gov and the voluntary service email for questions. Look for the 2027 release in late January before you mail, and send early enough to arrive during the week.

  1. A family or class card drive. Plain folded cardstock, a hand-drawn heart and a thank-you message. It is a good Valentine's project for a youth group or a ward activity; our ward craft night ideas cover make-and-give nights, and our veterans services guide covers the VA's presence in the county.

Crafts that are also a date

The holiday's other half is dating, and a shared project makes a cheap date.

  1. Cookie decorating for two. Baking Me Crazy at 4801 North University Avenue, Suite 125, in the Riverwoods in Provo is a baking-supply shop open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (listed in October 2026). One reviewer describes a date night there decorating cookies, with icing, sprinkles, an idea sheet and a take-home box supplied and cleanup handled by the shop. Ask about February sessions.
  2. A piñata-making night. Candy Paradise at 1050 South State Street in Orem sells piñatas and Mexican candy, and it is one of the few shops here open on Sunday (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.). Build a heart-shaped piñata from cardboard and tissue paper and fill it from the store's candy bins.

February weather keeps it indoors

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station put February's normal high at 47.6 degrees and normal low at 27.5, with 8.7 inches of snow in an average February. Plan for table crafts, and on bad-air days keep candle and wood-burning projects for later; our kids' crafts guide for snow, red-air and heat days explains the air-quality thresholds and has a full indoor list.
