September Family Home Evening Ideas in Utah Valley (2027): Nine Ideas From Labor Day to the First Corn Maze

Nine September 2027 FHE ideas for Utah Valley: Labor Day festivals, the Salt Lake Temple open house's last weeks, the Monday market and corn mazes.

September in Utah Valley starts with a holiday Monday and ends with corn mazes, and in 2027 it also brings the last weeks of tours inside the Salt Lake Temple. The four Mondays are September 6, 13, 20 and 27. Below are nine ideas, in the order the month offers them, each with what we could confirm on October 20, 2026.

1. Labor Day in Payson

Labor Day is the first Monday of September under Utah Code 63G-1-301, September 6 in 2027, and BYU's academic calendar marks it as a holiday. Payson's Golden Onion Days, the city's Labor Day weekend celebration, has run through the Monday: Payson's page gave August 30 to September 2 for 2024, and the Daily Herald listed September 3 to 7 for 2026, with concerts, a carnival, a car show, races, a parade, fireworks and vendors. Neither source said which events fall on Monday. Our Golden Onion Days guide tracks the schedule.

2. Labor Day evening on Provo's courthouse block

The same Herald listing put Provo's Festival Latinoamericano at the Utah County Historic Courthouse from September 4 to 7, 2026, 6 to 10 p.m., which included Labor Day evening. An evening festival downtown on a holiday Monday works as a home evening for a family with a few dollars for dinner. Our Festival Latinoamericano guide has the details as 2027's are announced.

3. The Primary video from Saturday

The Church News 2027 calendar lists a Friend to Friend video for children on Saturday, September 4. It's the first Church broadcast after the summer break: the same calendar lists no Churchwide events in July and August. If the holiday weekend swallowed it, Monday the 13th is the night to watch it together.

4. A family conversation about tithing declaration

The same Church News calendar lists tithing declaration from September through December. The Church's General Handbook says that whenever possible, all members of a family, including children, should attend together. Our November guide has a home evening built around preparing for it; September is when the window opens.

5. The Salt Lake Temple before the doors close

Temple Square's ticketing page lists tours daily from April 5 to October 1, 2027, scheduled from 8:40 a.m. to 8 p.m., with reservations made at TempleSquare.org or in the Temple Square app, up to six tickets per reservation. That makes Monday, September 27 the last Monday of the open house. Tickets are released in batches, so if your family hasn't gone, check for releases in August. Our Salt Lake Temple open house guide has the planning details.

6. The Monday market, while it still runs until 9

Springville's Sunset Farmers Market at Civic Center Park runs every Monday from June through October, according to the city's page, and September is the last month it stays open until 9 p.m. (October hours are 5 to 8). Our 52 ideas guide has a simple rule for making it a home evening with small children.

7. A corn maze on a Monday

The fall farms hadn't posted 2027 opening dates when we checked. In October 2026, Google listed Cornbelly's in Lehi at 4 to 10 p.m. on Mondays and Gordo's Fun Farm in Spanish Fork at noon to 9 p.m. on Mondays, both closed Sundays; those were October hours, so confirm September's once the farms open. Our fall farm festivals guide and pumpkin patches guide cover the farms in more detail.

A corn maze comes with its own lesson: the iron rod in 1 Nephi 8, and the mists of darkness. Give the oldest child the map.

8. The equinox, two days late

The fall equinox is late on Wednesday, September 22, 2027, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory: 11:02 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, which is just after midnight on the daylight-saving clocks Utah keeps in September. On Monday the 20th, sunset in Provo is 7:29 p.m. and, per Sunrise-Sunset.org, the evenings are now losing more than ten minutes a week. Go outside at sunset, note the time and the spot on the horizon, and do it again on the first Monday of December, when the sun sets at 5:02 p.m. much farther south along the horizon.

9. The last warm evenings outdoors

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station give September an average high of 83.1 degrees and an average low of 52.0. That's comfortable weather for an after-dinner hike, and sunset is still after 7:15 on every Monday. Our FHE hikes guide has the short ones, and our fall in Provo guide covers the canyon drives as the leaves turn.

Also in September: the Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City and the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Lehi, both covered in their own guides.
