October Family Home Evening Ideas in Utah Valley (2027): Conference Monday, Columbus Day and a Sunday Halloween

October 2027 FHE ideas for Utah Valley: conference Monday, Columbus Day, the Monday-night fall circuit, the last canyon drives, and a Sunday Halloween.

October 2027 has four Mondays, October 4, 11, 18 and 25, and a calendar quirk at each end: it opens the day after general conference and closes with Halloween on a Sunday. In between are a state holiday, the last weeks of Springville's Monday market and the corn mazes. Hours and dates below were checked on October 20, 2026, a year ahead, so confirm the 2027 ones.

Monday Sunset (Provo) The hook
Oct. 4 7:06 p.m. The day after general conference
Oct. 11 6:55 p.m. Columbus Day
Oct. 18 6:44 p.m. The fall circuit: market, maze, train
Oct. 25 6:34 p.m. The last Monday before a Sunday Halloween

October 4: conference Monday, with the open house over

General conference is October 2 and 3, 2027, per the Church News 2027 calendar. The Church's page for the Mount Timpanogos Temple lists it closed on the conference Saturday.

A conference Monday that isn't a quiz. Hand each person a sticky note on Sunday night. On Monday, each writes one sentence from conference they want to remember and sticks it on the bathroom mirror. That's the whole lesson; the mirror does the rest of the month.

The temple open house has closed. Temple Square's ticketing page lists Salt Lake Temple tours from April 5 to Friday, October 1, 2027. The Church News lists the Salt Lake Temple Celebration's closing event in October without a date. If your family went (our open house guide has the background), October 4 is a good night to talk about it while conference is fresh. If you didn't, our general conference weekend guide covers what's open around Temple Square on a conference weekend in any year.

October 11: Columbus Day

The second Monday of October is Columbus Day under Utah Code 63G-1-301. It's a state legal holiday; whether your children's schools close depends on the district, so check its 2027-28 calendar. (In 2026, Provo City School District's fall break ran Thursday, October 22 through Monday, October 26 instead, per the district's calendar.)

A Book of Mormon lesson for the day. 1 Nephi 13:12 describes a man among the Gentiles who "went forth upon the many waters." Read it, find the Atlantic on a map, and talk about what it took to cross it in 1492.

Or use the long weekend for the last canyon drive. UDOT's seasonal roads page says it closes SR-92, the Alpine Loop through American Fork Canyon, "typically November through May or June, depending on the weather." October is usually the last month to drive it; check UDOT's live status first. Our Alpine Loop guide has the stops and the recreation fee.

October 18: the Monday-night fall circuit

Three October things in and around Utah Valley run on Monday nights specifically.

Springville's market, final month. The Sunset Farmers Market at Civic Center Park runs Mondays through October, with October hours of 5 to 8 p.m., according to Springville's page. Sunset on the 18th is 6:44, so arrive by 5:30.

A corn maze open on Monday. When we checked in October 2026, Google listed Cornbelly's in Lehi at 4 to 10 p.m. on Mondays and Gordo's Fun Farm in Spanish Fork at noon to 9 p.m. on Mondays, both closed Sundays. Check 2027 hours before you go; our pumpkin patches guide compares the farms.

The Halloween Express. The Heber Valley Railroad's website says its Halloween Express "runs on Monday, Thursday, and Friday evenings throughout October," a 90-minute family ride to its haunted Grim Hollow station. It's ticketed; see our Heber Valley Railroad guide.

You won't do all three. The market is the cheap one, the maze is the tiring one, and the train is the splurge.

October 25: planning around a Sunday Halloween

October 31, 2027 is a Sunday. Cities and wards schedule their own Halloween events, and none had announced 2027 plans when we checked, so watch your city's and your ward's calendars for the days they choose.

That makes Monday the 25th the family's Halloween night, whatever the neighborhood ends up doing:

For the full October circuit, see our Halloween in Utah Valley guide and, for families with small children, our trunk-or-treats guide.

The weather, and what comes next

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station give October an average high of 68.5 degrees, an average low of 40.9, and the first trace of snow in the normals (0.6 inches). Evenings cool quickly after sunset; bring jackets to anything that ends after dark.

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 7, 2027. Sunset on Monday, November 1 is 6:25 p.m.; a week later it's 5:18. Our November guide is built around that change.
