May Family Home Evening Ideas in Utah Valley (2027): Five Mondays Ending on Memorial Day

May 2027 FHE ideas for Utah Valley, planned back from Memorial Day: a cemetery visit done right, Mother's Day Monday, and canyon roads reopening.

May 2027 has five Mondays, May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, and the last one is Memorial Day. If your family decorates graves that day, it goes better when the four Mondays before it get you ready. This guide is planned backward from May 31.

The Memorial Day evening, planned backward

Memorial Day is the last Monday of May under Utah Code 63G-1-301. Provo City School District's 2026-27 calendar ends classwork on Friday, May 28, so for Provo children it's the first Monday of summer.

What the Provo City Cemetery allows. The cemetery is at 610 S. State St. Provo City's cemetery rules say:

The city's 2026 holiday schedule lists no burials on Memorial Day weekend Saturday and on Memorial Day itself. The office number is 801-852-6607. If your family's graves are in another city, call that city's cemetery; rules differ.

A home evening that goes to the cemetery. Sunset on May 31 is 8:51 p.m., per Sunrise-Sunset.org, so an after-dinner visit has plenty of light. A plan that works with children:

  1. Before you go, tell one story about each person whose grave you'll visit. One story, not a biography.
  2. At the grave, let a child place the flowers and read the dates aloud. Ask how old the person was.
  3. Before you leave, walk one row you don't know and read three other stones. Ask the children what they notice: the oldest date, the youngest age, a name they share.
  4. The scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:22, "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

If you don't know where your family is buried, Monday, May 24 is the night to find out (below).

The four Mondays before it

May 3: the young adults' devotional. The Church News 2027 calendar lists a Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults on Sunday, May 2. For YSA home evening groups, Monday is the discussion. Our YSA and roommate FHE guide has formats for a group in an apartment.

May 10: the day after Mother's Day. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 9. A Monday home evening where the children run everything, from the opening song to the treat, is a better present than another card. Have them plan it in secret the week before.

May 17: one temple closes for two weeks. The Church's page for the Mount Timpanogos Temple in American Fork lists it closed from May 17 through May 31, 2027. If a temple-grounds walk is on your May list, use another temple; our temple grounds guide covers them.

May 24: the children's broadcast, and finding the graves. The Church News calendar lists a Friend to Friend video for children on Saturday, May 22. Watch it together Monday if the family missed it. Then use the rest of the evening to prepare for next week: write down which relatives are buried where, and if the family has records on FamilySearch, look up burial places together. Our FHE with toddlers guide has ideas for keeping a broadcast short enough for the youngest.

Two things that change in late May

The canyon roads reopen. UDOT's seasonal roads page says it closes SR-92 (the Alpine Loop through American Fork Canyon) and its other seasonal roads "typically November through May or June, depending on the weather." In 2026 UDOT announced the Alpine Loop open on May 22, just before Memorial Day weekend. Once it's open, the Cascade Springs boardwalks and the Alpine Loop drive are back on the evening list; see our Cascade Springs guide and Alpine Loop guide. Check UDOT's live status before you go.

The sheepdog championship lands on Memorial Day. The Soldier Hollow Classic sheepdog championship and festival lists May 28 to 31, 2027, at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway. Its FAQ says the trials run Friday through Sunday and the championship is on Monday, from 8 a.m. to about 5 p.m., with children's activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's ticketed, and it's a day outing rather than an evening one, but on Memorial Day it can be both: the trials in the morning, the cemetery after dinner. Our Soldier Hollow Classic guide has the rest.

Umbrellas and long evenings

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Provo BYU station give May an average high of 75.7 degrees and an average low of 47.4. May is also the wettest month in those normals, with 2.01 inches of precipitation. Evenings are long (sunset moves from 8:25 p.m. on May 3 to 8:51 p.m. on May 31), so most May Mondays can be outdoors, with an umbrella in the car. Our FHE hikes guide is the outdoor list for the month.
