What you need to apply

BYU's how-to-apply page lists the steps:

  1. Schedule the ecclesiastical endorsement early. "The Ecclesiastical Endorsement is required for all applicants," BYU says. It includes two interviews in which you review the Honor Code. Our Honor Code explainer covers what it asks.
  2. Enter your high school classes. If your school is U.S.-accredited, you type your courses into the application. If not, you need a credential evaluation first, from IERF or The Evaluation Company, which BYU warns can take several weeks.
  3. Check for an English proficiency requirement. The application tells you after the personal information section whether you need an English test.
  4. Line up documents: college transcripts if you've taken college classes, translated school records if needed, and contact information for recommenders.
  5. Apply at apply.byu.edu. The application adapts to your situation, so what it asks can change as you go.

BYU warns that "all required application materials must be received by BYU by the appropriate deadline, so start early."

Test scores

BYU has been test-optional since 2020, The Daily Universe reported, and it has used a holistic review since 2018. Its how-to-apply page notes that ACT or SAT scores may be required in some cases, so submit them if the application asks.

Demand is high

The Daily Universe reported in November 2025 that BYU's applications kept climbing, with the most since the university adopted holistic review in 2018, and that the 2025 freshman class was one of the largest in BYU's history. BYU's deadline page doesn't publish an admit rate.

After you're admitted

Once you're in, the costs and the calendar come next: see BYU tuition for 2026-27, our BYU student guide, and, if you're weighing both Provo-area schools, UVU tuition for 2026-27.
